In this book which can be found in the classroom, the development of Shakespeare’s use
of meter is discussed in great detail. Not only does it go over his use of rhetoric strategies and
development of meter, but it shows how this development of meter changed his writing style.
This book will be really helpful in my research as I will be able to analyze the importance of
Shakespeares use of meter in Hamlet, as I will be able to follow its development and have a
better understanding of the impact it has on literature.

This source will be very useful in my research of one of many of Hamlets soliloquys.
Although just one of many, it is one of great importance as it is his most renown “to be or not to
be” soliloquy. This source analyzes the meter line for line and highlights the stressed and
unstressed syllables throughout the entire soliloquy. In using this, I will be able to get a better
idea as to how it was read and be more exact in my analyses of the play as a whole.

This source notes the importance of many lines throughout Hamlet, and for many even
notes the use of a feminine ending on some of the lines. Although this source focuses more
heavily on the use of rhetoric devices, its line by line analysis of major scenes will help me when
writing about the use of meter and iambic pentameter used in Hamlet.

Shakespeare Quarterly 34.2 (1983): 147–158. Web.
Although this source does not focus solely on Shakespeare’s work of Hamlet, it does
focus on his use of Iambic Pentameter. Because that is the sole focus on my research essay, this
article will come into use when writing. Shakespeare’s use of meter extends far beyond Hamlet,
and although the play itself will be analyzed for its use, I need to use articles such as this one to
support it and better understand it.
