Approval of Minutes from Last Meeting The minutes of the previous meeting (October 22, 2009) were sent to all members via e-mail. Comments or corrections were requested. The minutes were approved without any changes. IV. New Business 1 Chair Woolsey introduced LTGEN Rosa who spoke about The Citadel’s mission, enrollment, budget cuts, fund raising, Blueprint implementation, and other subjects. Key points included that there are no furloughs planned despite the projected state cuts; that moving forward, the focus will be on transparency, communication, and engagement; the college budget needs to be decentralized; there are plans afoot to increase retention/graduation rates; and more needs to be done to focus on career planning, interviewing, and resume preparation for cadets. A Faculty Council representative asked about when retention rates are measured and it was clarified that it is after drop/add. LTGEN Rosa did mention that the junior year to senior year attrition is surprising, and that he has encouraged the development of more online summer courses. There was some discussion about heavy course loads, and students intentionally doubling up so they have 12 credits per semester during their senior years. A Faculty Council representative asked about a rumor that s/he had heard about the President telling alumni groups that he planned to shrink the size of the faculty. LTGEN Rosa said that the rumor was not true and that he did not say that, and that he is committed to maintaining the culture of small class sizes and engaged faculty. There was a question about whether a two-day Fall break could be attached to Parents’ Weekend so that cadets can enjoy more time with their relatives. There was some discussion about how Thanksgiving break used to run from Wednesday through Sunday. A representative asked about future tuition increases, in light of high recruitment/demand. LTGEN Rose explained the importance of staying at the higher education price index in order to qualify for stimulus funding, but also said that the Army has quadrupled its scholarship dollars since he joined The Citadel. A representative pointed out the importance of effective academic advising, tracking the reasons why students drop out, a general lack of awareness for the Krause Leadership Center, and the proposed sophomore required course. BGEN Hines said that they plan to integrate faculty input into the cognitive development of cadet leadership activities. A representative questioned the credit hours assigned to the sophomore required course since that means that there can be few assignments outside of class. LTGEN Rosa said it was possible to grow the one-credit course over time. A representative said that the Citadel Foundation grant reductions are affecting scholarship and research. BGEN Hines said there was a glitch in the transition and has confirmed with the chairs of the Research and Faculty Development Committees that the Provost’s Office plans to reimburse 25% of the grants that were cut. Extra monies were discovered in the General Pickett fund. BGEN Hines went on to say that the total pot of money is slightly lower but successful applicants will be funded at 100%. VII. Adjournment Chair Woolsey adjourned the meeting at 12:20 pm. 2 Respectfully submitted, Elizabeth Connor, Secretary 3
