AZTEC TRIBE
 Nomadic tribe
Arrived in Mesoamerica beginning of 13th Century
Dominant force in central Mexico
Brought many city-states under their control
Spanish conquistador (Hernan Cortes) overthrew in 1521
FOOD/SETTLEMENTS
Eagle was a sign to build their settlements
Drained the land & constructed artificial islands
Planted gardens
Crops: Maize(corn), beans, squashes, potatoes, tomatoes, and avocadoes
Were also supported through fishing and hunting
System of agriculture(cultivation of land and irrigation)
WORSHIPPING TEMPLES
Lots of devotion to Aztec Gods
Temples, palaces, plazas and statues built
Huitzilopochtli(god of sun and war)
Quetzalcoatl (“Feathered Serpent”)

75-80 buildings in capital
Pyramids, walls, gathering places, shops, shrines
Often sink and needed repair
Teotihuacan and Templo Mayor
Built in each region
Often carved out of mountains
Existed before the Aztecs did

The gods- Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc
Double temple
Completed in 1497
Materials- stone and covered in stucco and polychrome paint

Third largest city (200,000 population) at the time
Beautiful gardens and menageries(place where animals are kept)
Aqueducts brought drinking water to the city
Formed two alliances

They would use their resources such

WORSHIPPING OF THE GODS
• The Aztec’s worshipped more than one
god.
• Some gods had their own day and
months.
• The Sun God was the most important.
AZTEC RITUALS
o The gods were nourished by human blood.
o Higher status people were thought to give
the most blood.
o The rituals could take more than one human
at a time.
oThey would be taken to temples or pyramid.
o The rituals were taken the same way.
AZTEC RITUALS
• Hundred to thousands of people were
sacrificed yearly.
• Not all sacrifices led to death.
•Sacrifices weren’t always humans.
• They would ritually bury objects.
• The hearts would be cut out.
• The women were sacrificed differently.
THE AFTER LIFE
• They believed they became stars in
the sky.
• The priest would often eat the victim.
•They would be head them and put
them on racks.
