Health Promotion Session Plan Deidre Dillman Overall Health Content targeted: Carbohydrates Specific Component targeted: Good/Bad Carbs Client or Group Profile: Anyone (18 and older) interested in learning more about how to eat a healthy diet and the difference between good and bad carbohydrates Opening activity – ice breaker or content related attention grabber Activity Objective: After completing the ‘Good/Bad’ Carbs worksheet and discussing our answers, the adults will develop a sense of what good and bad carbohydrates are so they can become aware of what they are consuming on a daily basis. Time frame: 10 minutes Activity Description: I will hand out the list of random food items. The individuals will write whether a particular carb is good or bad. After the individuals complete the worksheet, we will discuss our answers aloud with the entire class. Materials needed: Worksheet, Pen/Pencil Standards: 1, 4, 5, 7 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Main activity – identification of content to be addressed Activity Objective: After lecturing about carbs, the individuals will have developed a keener knowledge on the topic of carbohydrate nutrition. Time frame: 10 minutes Activity Description: The individuals will listen as I ‘lecture’ about carbohydrates using a power point presentation. Materials needed: power point, over-head projector Additional activity – (optional) Activity Objective: Talking/discussing in groups will help the individuals comfortably discuss aloud, what they learned throughout the power point presentation. This will even allow the individuals to discuss ideas/topics that they may have missed through the presentation. Time frame: 10 minutes Activity Description: The individuals will form small groups to discuss what new and/or interesting facts they learned throughout the presentation. Materials needed: Paper/pen Standards: 1, 4, 5, 7 _______________________________________________________________________________ Closure: Questions and Answers Question # 1: How are each of you going to incorporate more good carbs into your diet, and eliminate the bad carbs? Desired Client Response: Start journaling or looking more closely at nutritional labels for things such as ‘whole wheat.’ Question # 2: What is the main function of carbohydrates? Desired Client Response: Your body’s main energy source; carbs are very important to your diet.
