KiVa Anti-Bullying Programme: Training for Schools
Training Date: 3rd - 4th March, 2015
at CEBEI offices at Bangor University
About the KiVa school based anti-bullying programme
KiVa is a comprehensive and strongly evidence based multi-component programme that was funded by the
Finnish Ministry of Education and developed and researched at the University of Turku, Finland. It includes an
annual child on-line survey, whole school activities and materials, class lessons, online games for children, a
parent’s website, and materials for a parent’s evening. It also has an intervention for a school-based KiVa
Team for use in dealing with accepted referrals of bullying.
Results from a large randomised controlled trial (RCT) in Finland showed that 98% of bullying incidents
stopped completely or were reduced and children’s reported levels of bullying and victimization have reduced
year on year in KiVa schools. The programme has now been rolled out across Finland, with further Finnish
Government funding and 90% of Finnish schools are now using it.

KiVa in the UK
In 2012/3 we ran a pilot trial of KiVa with Year 5/6 children in fourteen Welsh and three Cheshire primary
schools with good results. We are now researching the programme, in an RCT, with our partners the Dartington
Social Research Unit. This two-year project has BIG Lottery Innovation funding and involves all KS2 pupils in
twenty primary schools from across Wales. Preliminary results are expected later this year but the programme
has been enthusiastically received by the participating schools and was highlighted in a Welsh Government
Estyn Inspection report on how schools are dealing with bullying. As a result of our experience in delivering
the training for this trial, and following attendance at a trainer workshop in Finland, we are currently the only
licensed trainers in the UK and are offering training for schools in March 2015.

KiVa training for schools
Training for schools wishing to deliver KiVa in 2015-2016 will be delivered on 3rd and 4th March 2015 subject
to sufficient interest. This will be a two-day training. Ideally two staff from each participating school should
attend the training, as there are separate workshops on the school wide universal programme and the KiVa
team strategies for dealing with confirmed incidents of bullying. The two-day training will cost £600 per school
(plus VAT). Training will include one copy of the Unit 1 and 2 manuals for KS2 with their detailed lesson plans
and materials.
Prior to the training, schools will need to register, through our Centre, with KiVa Finland in order to access the
additional teacher material, the KiVa online games and activities, and to enable the children to participate in
the online pupil survey. The annual cost of KiVa registration for a school is £200 for the first 70 pupils and
£2.50 per KS2 pupil thereafter. This gives the teachers access to online resources and the child survey and
enables children to play the on-line games at home or in school. Schools also need to purchase a manual for
