Oncology Nursing Society
Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to provide an
overview of basic oncology nursing practice that
may assist those participants in preparing for the
Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®) Examination or
those participants looking for a comprehensive
review of oncology nursing practice. The course is
based on the OCN® Test Blueprint.
Objectives: Upon completion of the two-day
course, the participant will be able to:
 Describe the major elements of the OCN® exam,
discuss test-taking strategies, and review sample
questions.
 Discuss the scientific basis for oncology nursing
practice, including carcinogenesis, immunology,
genetics, classification (TNM), cancer
pathophysiology and research / clinical trials.
 Discuss the incidence, etiology, prevention,
detection, prognosis, and treatment modalities
including nursing care for the most common
types of cancer
 Identify strategies for health promotion and
disease prevention, as well as cancer screening,
early detection, and diagnostic testing
 Describe the pathophysiology, clinical
manifestations, medical management and nursing
care of common oncologic emergencies
 Discuss issues related to professional practice and
performance including legal and ethical issues,
patient advocacy, quality assurance, professional
development, scopes and standards for oncology
nursing practice
 Identify symptom management and supportive
care strategies for oncology patients throughout
the trajectory of care including survivorship and
end of life
 Discuss the psychosocial needs of oncology
patients, including cultural, financial, social
concerns
 Identify risk factors, prevention, education and
treatment options for patients with reproductive
issues or sexual dysfunction

by OCN® / AOCN® certified members of the Piedmont
Triad Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society.
About the Examination
The OCN® Examination is designed to test the
knowledge necessary for the nurse to practice
competently at the basic level within the specialty
of oncology nursing. It is administered via
computer-based testing during quarterly testing
windows. Please contact the Oncology Nursing

the examination.
