Module Plan Outline Specific Learning Objectives: Learning Statement: What do you want students to learn in this module? After completion of this module, students will: Navigate successfully through the Blackboard shell Understand the course benefits and expectations Understand and explain the ESA Find and Identify the California K-12 State Health Education Standards Evidence of Understanding Statement: What should students be able to do after the module? Following this module, students should be able to: Locate and Explain, in text or verbally, how to access the California K-12 State Health Education Standards Explain three Health & Safety aspects High School Students face on a daily basis Connect the three aspects chosen to the California K-12 State Health Education Course Prerequisites: What skills, knowledge and prior experience do students need for this module? Prior skills or knowledge of health and safety in schools is not required to begin Module 1. However, each still will have their own experiences from when they were in school and are currently experiencing in their current placement and will bring their own personal lenses to the course. It is required to complete this course while participating in their student teaching. Students must also be accepted in the single-subject credential teacher preparation program at California State University: East Bay in order to enroll in Health and Safety as this course is a requirement. How will you determine whether students have these? In the first module, I will ask students to introduce themselves to the course via a discussion board post. I will ask them to share their course expectation(s), professional backgrounds and personal interests. Also, I will ask if they have ever taken an online course before and if so, how their experience of it was in order to gauge their skill level and learn more about their prior interactions with learning online. This will let me know if they may need additional support in navigation and instruction. How will you connect to students’ interests, backgrounds, strengths, needs? I will respond publicly to each post on the introduction board and require each student to respond to two of their classmate’s posts as well. Please post a text, audio or video introduction to your fellow classmates and include the following information: If you have taken an online course previously and describe your experience with the course Course Expectations – What are you knowledge or skills are hoping to develop in the weeks to come? Your educational & professional background Personal hobbies and interests Learning Activities Module 1 Discussion Board: High School Challenges In this module, you learned about the California K-12 State Health Education Standards and the responsibilities of educators. Now, you will post about THREE aspects of health and safety that today’s high school students may face on a daily basis. This can come from your own experiences, research on “current topics” that exist related to teen health, safety, and wellness, the course readings, and/or your experiences so far in your teaching placement. Your post should include the following information: 3 Aspects high school students currently face Connect all three aspects/topics to the California K-12 State Health Education Standards References to the sources you used Please post to the discussion board, and respond to at least two classmate’s posts. Application Activities Module 1 Project: Please create an infographic identifying health aspects high school students face and please cite your references. You may use the tool of your choice; PiktoChart - http://piktochart.com/ or Bubbl.us - http://bubbl.us/ Course Assessment: What evidence of student learning will you collect? (formal or informal methods of assessment) I will collect evidence of student learning in several ways, which include monitoring student’s dialogue posts in the discussion boards and in their course interactions to ensure students are mastering course content. When reviewing the discussion boards, I will look for quality posts and ensure they met participation standards. At the middle and end of the course, I will “ask how well students feel they have met their learning goals for the course, and how well they feel they performed overall” (Palloff & Pratt, 2007). This form of formative assessment will be a survey completed as a mid-term and final activity. Students will be allotted participation points in terms of grading for the reflections. What criteria will you use to interpret the evidence? I will use rubrics to assess student learning when grading coursework. Below is a template I created to grade the first posting. Criteria Attention to prompt Novice The reflection is present but inadequate in word count and there are less Competent The post is less than 250-300 words in length and THREE concepts are Proficient The post is 250-300 words in length and THREE clearly listed concepts Clarity and Relevance Use of references than 3 concepts identified and loosely described with evidence from readings, discussion, and responded to two or less classmate’s postings. (2 points) The concepts concerning the topic provided in post are not labeled clearly or discernible but are loosely supported with relevant examples. (2 points) loosely identified and described with evidence from readings, discussion, and responded to two classmate’s postings. (6 points) are identified and described with evidence from readings, discussion, and responded to two or more classmate’s postings.
