Compare: -6 ___ -5 What is the opposite of -5? 25? What is the opposite of zero? Is zero positive or negative? Zero is greater than negative numbers and less than positive numbers. Today we will learn how to order integers. Ordering integers • Integers can be ordered from greatest to least (descending order). • Integers can also be ordered from least to greatest (ascending order). Turn to page 61 in your binder notes. Write the numbers 4, -8, and -2 in order from least to greatest. • Remember, the further to the right that a number is on a number line, the greater the number. Write the integers -1, -9, and 0 in order from greatest to least. • First, plot the points on the number line. Then determine the order based on the positions of the integers. Write the integers -4, 4, -2, 0, and 2 in ascending order. Below is a table of the coldest recorded temperatures in different states and Washington D.C. Write the places in order from the coldest temperature to the warmest temperature. • • • • • • Mississippi -19F Louisiana -16F Alabama -27F Washington D.C. -15F New York -52F Texas -23F Write the integers 8, -14, 2 in descending order. Write the numbers -25,-2,-18,4 in ascending order. Write the integers 0,-9,-3,4 in order from least to greatest. Write the numbers 1,-5,8,-10 in order from greatest to least.
