How do Academic Advisors help? • Give guidance and advice on degree requirements and completion. • Answer questions about transfer courses. • Give guidance and advice on course schedules and course loads. • Refer you to campus resources. • Provide help and assistance on pretty much anything else you may need (almost). What happens in Mandatory Advising Sessions? • Plan the next three semesters (minimum- we can do more!) • Address questions or concerns about grades and classes • Discuss catalog and degree plan requirements and any adjustments. • Want to change your major? • Check in about transition to Texas A&M. Freshman Group Meeting • Required to attend one of two possible meeting times • Usually in October • Re-cap departmental information • Check-in after mid-terms • Prepare for Mandatory Advising • Answer lingering questions • More information to come via email! TLAC Communications • All TLAC communication goes through your OFFICIAL TAMU NEO email address. Students are responsible for checking this address regularly. – DO NOT forward this email to Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. – Your TAMU email address is: NetID(at)neo(dot)tamu(dot)edu – Please make sure your email address is professional! Your professors and mentor teachers will use this to contact you, so please no “hotaggiechick15@neo.tamu.edu.” TLAC Communications • The Advising Office sends out monthly newsletters (via departmental listserv), as well as email concerning course announcements, professional development, and other opportunities. – If it says it’s from Amanda Mather- READ it! Degree Plans • TLAC offers three teacher certification options: – PK-6 Generalist (with ESL Supplemental)* – 4-8 Language Arts/Social Studies (with ESL Supplemental)* – 4-8 Math/Science • All three certification options meet requirements for a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies! Professional Phase • Admission to the professional phase of Teacher Education (or “upper level”) is contingent upon completion of: – MATH 141 and 142 (or equivalents) – 8 hours of laboratory science courses – ENGL 104 – TEFB 273 or INST 310 (or equivalents.) – Minimum of 45 hours of coursework – Minimum 2.75 GPR • Delays in completing these requirements will delay admission to the professional phase and could affect graduation. No upper level coursework until prerequisites are complete! Grades & Academic Progress • You must maintain a GPR of 2.75 or better at TAMU to continue as a TLAC student. – All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better; no grades of D or F allowed. – If this requirement is not met, you WILL be dismissed from TLAC and asked to change your major. – You must have this requirement met by the end of your first year at TAMU. Q-Drop & Withdrawal • Q-Drop/Withdrawal Deadline is November 15 at 5:00pm. • See an advisor if you are thinking of QDropping or Withdrawing- one of these may help you save your GPR so that you can remain in TLAC.
