Instructional Strategies Curriculum Design
Provides knowledge and skills in teaching large and small groups using a variety of active learning strategies including discussion, team-based learning, processoriented guided inquiry, casebased teaching and other methods for engaging learners.
Introduces principles and practices for designing a course or unit of instruction, including a rotation experience. Focus is on constructing learnercentered goals and objectives, assessment strategies, and selection of appropriate instructional strategies.

Learning
Teaching as Scholarship in
Medical Education
An overview of major adult learning theories applicable to medical education and how these form the basis for practical aspects of teaching and learning in medicine, including selfdirected learning and helping novices acquire skills and knowledge to build expertise.
Focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in medical education research using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods study designs. Includes IRB proposal preparation and the basics of scholarly writing for publication.

Facilitation
Introduces use of simulated learning experiences in preparing healthcare professionals for patient care. Emphasizes facilitation skills needed to provide effective feedback in small group debrief experiences.
Hands-on experiential course!
Explores group and team facilitation including leadership, member roles, group development, team performance, and methods for dealing with conflict among learners in a team setting.
Digital Media Technologies for
Teaching in Medicine
Reflective Practice in
Medical Education
Introduces faculty to use of Web
2.0 digital media technologies that are creating revolutionary changes in how we think about teaching and learning in the 21 st century. Provides an opportunity to learn strategies for using digital and social media in preclinical and clinical settings.
Explores reflective practice including the educator’s role in developing trainees as reflective practitioners and the role of reflection in one’s own professional development.
Introduces narrative medicine as a reflective practice.
VCU-paid faculty may use their tuition waiver benefits to cover the costs of courses.
• Up to two courses per semester (full-time, after one year of employment).
• If employee withdraws after the deadline / fails to complete the course / leaves the University / earns an unsatisfactory grade, tuition waiver is revoked and employee becomes responsible for tuition.
Other faculty who teach for the School of Medicine are encouraged to seek tuition assistance through their home institutions.
Faculty member completes TiME application form and submits a 1-page letter of interest / reasons for wanting to join the program.
Faculty member obtains a letter of support from department or division chair.
Faculty member completes University Tuition Waiver form and In-State tuition form (if needed).
Upon University approval of the Certificate in Medical Education program, faculty will need to apply to the School of Education to earn the Certificate.
