The Whitfields visit Tashkent Hello! I’m Mrs. Whitfield from England. I teach at a University. Sometimes my family and I visit Uzbekistan because historical places interest us very much. We want to go to there again. We usually visit Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand. I always tell my students about them. We like these cities very much. We like Uzbek people. Out next visit is on September 4. We’re very happy to visit Uzbekistan again. We have got friends there. Lucy and John have got many friends in Tashkent. They write to their friends very often. -------------------------------------------------------------------- All about Mary Mary is a schoolgirl in England. There are seven people in her family. They live in London. They have got a big house. Mary has got a mother, a father, a brother and a sister. Mary is 15, her brother is 13 and her sister is 9. They have got a grandmother and a grandfather. Mary’s father is a businessman. Her mother is a doctor. Her brother and sister are pupils. May Day holiday May Day is a holiday in England. On May Day young people pick flowers and put them in their homes. They sing spring songs and choose a May king and May queen and give them crowns of spring flowers. Children dance round a maypole with coloured ribbons. The ribbons make a bright picture on the maypole. But not a lot of people do it now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Polar Bear Polar bears are very big. They are three metres long. They live in the Arctic. It is very cold there but polar bears swim in the Arctic Ocean. The mother polar bear teaches her baby to swim. The mother polar bear makes a house in the snow. The little bears are with the parents for a year. They like playing. Baby polar bears put their noses in the snow when they play Hide and Seek. Heggy’s Family My name is Heggy. I’m a hedgehog. There are ten in my family. We live in a small house. My grandparents are nice. I have got three brothers. Their names are Hoggy, Higgy and Huggy. So there are four boys in my family. I have got two sisters. My sisters are small and nice. My parents are big and strong. I am strong too. I have got a long face, brown eyes, a long nose and a small mouth. I have got big ears and short legs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Safari Park What is a safari park? What animals are dangerous? There are a lot of safari parks in Great Britain. A safari park is like a large zoo. The animals there do not live in cages. They are free. Safari parks are good for animals. you can visit a safari park on foot and by car. In the park with lions and tigers you must be in a car. There are a lot of dangerous animals. You must not open the car doors or windows. Jackie Jackie is a little monkey. He lives in the zoo. Children like him and give him sweets. Jackie likes sweets. The animal keeper says to Jackie’s parents: “Don’t give him sweets. It is not good for him”. “Oh, Keeper”, say his father and mother. “We don’t give him sweets.” “I can help you”, says the keeper. He writes a sign on the cage: DON’T GIVE JACKIE SWEETS! When children come to Jackie’s cage again they see a big sign on it. They don’t give him any sweets. But Jackie likes sweets. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Pandas Pandas live in China. They eat bamboo. They eat 10-20 kg of bamboo every day. Some pandas live about 30 years and can be very big - 120 kg. A baby panda is very small – about 100 g. Little pandas stay with their mothers for about two years. They learn to find food and water and to climb. Now there are not a lot of bamboo forests for pandas. So pandas are rare now. In China there are 12 parks where people give pandas food and look after them. A family of mice On a big farm there is a house. In this house lives a family: a father mouse, a mother mouse and a little mouse. The father says to the little mouse: “Son, you must be afraid of cats because they can eat you up. Let’s go to the yard and see the cat.” First they see a green frog. The mouse asks: “Dad is this cat?” his father says “No, it’s a frog, it’s small.” Then they meet a cow. The son asks: “Is this a cat?” His father says: “No. The cat is not big.” They go on and the son asks: “Is this a cat?” the father says: “No, it’s sheep.” Now the mouse asks: “What colour is the cat?” The father says: “It’s black and white.” “Are those cats?” asks his little son. “Those are ducks”, says his father, “and those are hens.” Suddenly the father sees the cat and runs away. But the little son is not afraid of it. A dog sees the cat too and begins to bark. The cat climbs the tree and the mouse says: “Now I know that the cat can eat me and it says: “Woof- Woof”. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lucy’s Family This is L and her family. They live in a village near Cambridge. Lucy is a tall girl. She has got long, curly, black hair. Her grandmother is short and thin. Her hair is white. Mr. Whitfield is tall and strong. His hair is short and curly. Mrs. Whitfield is a nice woman. She is tall. She has got blond hair. It is short and straight. Her eyes are blue. Lucy’s brother John is tall and thin. He has got red hair. It is short and straight. His eyes are brown. Navruz 21 March is the Navruz holiday. It is the Asian New Year. People in Central Asia celebrate this holiday. There is a lot of music, dancing and singing. People in our country like it very much. They do not work on this day. They visit their friends and family and say “Happy Navruz”. They invite them to their homes. Often they take their children to the park. This is the first day of the spring holidays in schools. Children love Navruz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mowgli People live in cities and villages. Look at the boy in the picture. His name is Mowgli. He lives in the jungle. He doesn’t live with his parents. Now his father is a wolf. His mother, Ruksha, is a wolf too. Little wolves are his brothers. He likes to play with them. Mowgli has got a lot of friends: the bear Balu, the Black Panther Bagira and the snake Kaa. They take care of Mowgli. The tiger Sher Khan wants to eat him up. There are a lot of monkeys in the jungle. They think Mowgli is a monkey too. He looks like them. Mowgli is happy here. The jungle is his home. A sportsman He is strong and healthy. He gets up very early in the morning. He does 100 sit-ups. He has a cold shower. He gets dressed. He has a big breakfast: five cups of tea and biscuits and a lot of fruit. He brushes his teeth. He goes to work on foot. He never goes by bus. He works in a sports centre. He works hard. At two o’clock he has a good lunch. He goes home at six o’clock. He has dinner at eight o’clock. He goes to bed at ten o’clock. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A special Sunday Usually the animal keeper cleans and feeds the animals every day. Usually the lion and crocodile sleep. The elephant eats bananas. The gazelles run. The ducks swim and the bear asks for food. But this Sunday the keeper is sick and the animals are having fun. The elephant is washing the tiger. The snake is singing to the lion. The little tigers are playing with the bear. The ducks are listening to music. The gazelles are roller-skating. The little baby wolves are playing football. The monkeys are dancing. Berman Musicians Four friends live in the town of Berman. They are: a donkey, a cat, a dog and a rooster. They like music and singing. The first friend is not big. He has got four legs and a long tail. He likes playing guitar. He can sing loudly. The second friend is very big. He is grey. He has got long ears and big eyes. He runs fast. He likes eating grass. The third friend has got two legs. He likes singing in the mornings. He is beautiful because his body and his tail are black, red, blue and green. The fourth friend can bark. He is clever.
