Classroom LockDown
AutoLogin, LearnLock, ClassCopy
1 Introduction
The following tools are designed for the electronic classroom, both for instruction (classcopy copies
the instructor’s screen to the students’ screens), and for exam situations.
This is a simplified guide of instructor-ready information. It is also possible to reconfigure the
technologies using the Technical Reference manual as a starting point, but that does require some
work.
2 ClassCopy
Still Incomplete at this time. Instructions will be made available in early 2016.
3 LearnLock
LearnLock is a specialize firewall that operates in the users’ workstations. A typical use would be to
use LearnLock to restrict exams to only be able to access UW-Learn.
3.1 What it does
When LearnLock is enabled, students will only be able to access Internet and web sites needed
for UW-Learn activities. At the time of writing these include:




Learn.uwaterloo.ca
Cas.uwaterloo (the authentication web site)
Microsoft.ca (where the MS-Office help files are located)
A few additional cloud sites used by Learn
Some IT units may extend the list to include license servers for specialty software like MatLab,
SPSS and others which need access for the applications to run successfully.
Note: LearnLock does not prevent users from accessing their N: drives or other network shares.
If you need to prevent that access, combine LearnLock with AutoLogin described later in this
document.
3.2 How to Enable / Disable LearnLock
Visit the web page: http://learnlock.uwaterloo.ca
You will be prompted for a Userid/Password. Your nexus credentials will work for any faculty,
staff or other employee of UWaterloo. Students who are not employees will not be able to
proceed.
Once connected, a web page similar to the following is displayed.
The top line lists how many workstations will be affected: this is based on which workstation
you log in from. LearnLockGui (the web app) bases all operations on your workstation name,
and it will typically only work from a Podium/Instructor computer in the classroom.
Click the button below the closed lock in order to enable LearnLock. This will take a few
seconds, then the box in the upper right will display the results.
As you can see, the operation was to enable LearnLock, but two computers were down (not
responding). They might be turned off, crashed, or in the middle of a reboot.
Normally you would fix the problem then push the button again to enable LearnLock on all
workstations.
3.3 Disabling LearnLock
To disable LearnLock, and return the workstations to full Internet/Web access, follow the
instructions above, but press the button beneath the open lock.
4 AutoLogins
AutoLogins is a way to conduct exams in a classroom or run a free-access lab for purposes like
conference attendees. It has the following properties:


All workstations are logged off current accounts and rebooted
Workstations automatically log into local accounts on the workstation, no password entry is
needed. Even subsequent reboots will return to the autologin state.



People using the local account are prevented from accessing network shares like their home
directories
Students are prevented from logging into their nexus accounts. Any attempt to log in is met
with an immediate logout before the desktop is enabled
Faculty, Staff and employees (co-ops) are permitted to log into accounts and access any
network shares they need
When combined with LearnLock, AutoLogin creates an excellent environment for conducting online
exams.
The instructions are simple, visit https://learnlock.uwaterloo.ca just as described in the LearnLock
section, but this time press the Local Accounts button, then wait.
NOTE: the workstations will reboot. Anyone still logged in at the time will lose their work.
4.1 Turning Off AutoLogins
At the end of the exam, it is important to return the workstations to normal network access. Visit
https://learnlock.uwaterloo.ca and press the Nexus Logins button, then wait for it to complete.
NOTE: the workstations will reboot again to take the new settings. Anyone still logged in at the time
will lose their work.
