POWER QUALITY AUDIT POWER QUALITY AUDIT is the study of the sources, effects and control of disturbances which propagate via the electric power supply. What is Power Quality? Any power problem manifested in voltage, current, or frequency deviation that results in the failure or mis-operation of customer equipment. Common PQ Problems - Equipment Failure - Poor Power Factor - Drives and Motors tripping off-line - Transformer Overheating - Unexplained breaker operations - Misoperation due to utility faults - Motor Failures - Voltage sags - Transient over-voltage - Neutral ground voltage Power Quality Disturbances • • • • • Voltage Regulation Voltage Unbalance Frequency Regulation Flicker Severity Harmonic Distortion - Individual Voltage/Current Harmonic Distortion - Total Harmonic Distortion of the Voltage (THD) - Total Demand Distortion of the Load (TDD) Graphical Representation of Power Quality Disturbances 2. ENERGY AUDIT Energy audit is an essential activity for effective energy cost-control. It consists of detailed evaluation of energy consumption, technical and economic analysis of energy facilities, and recommendations for energy conservation measures. What is Energy Efficiency? Energy efficiency is an effective solution. It is the process of acquiring energy savings through proper management of energy consumption that leads to reduction of power and energy costs. Saint Luke’s Medical Center purchased and installed a 100 kVA UPS system for their Philips CT Scan System. The CT Scan operated erratically during UPS operation. Diagnostic monitoring of the CT Scan indicated a power problem. This dragged on for several months to the point that the UPS was bypassed and the CT scan operated on the utility supply. According to UPS specs the output regulation is +/- 3%. Actual test showed more than 3% and this was not acceptable to the CT Scan input. Poor Power Factor Identified using the PQ Monitoring System… NAIA complained that MERALCO readings indicated low system power factor while their meter indicated the opposite. We evaluated the system using U902 and UP 2210. Subsequent monitoring conducted confirmed the findings of MERALCO. This abnormally low power factor contributed to the high demand of the system. PQ Problems identified at St. Paul Hospital in Iloilo… Saint Paul Hospital in Iloilo encountered several unidentified problems, most of which were blamed on the utility supplier. The frequent problems were single phasing, overheating of transformer, abnormal operation of medical equipment, and others.
