May 4, 2012 Coal Mountain Elementary Mining For Coal . . . . . . . . Discovering Diamonds Debbie Smith, Principal Kim Fox, Assistant Principal Empowering Young Minds for a Bright Future Dear Parents, Important Dates: It has been an exciting week at CMES! First, I want to congratulate our wonderful Principal Pals for May! They represent our student body well and we are very proud of each one. Their names and classroom teachers are included in this newsletter. May 11 Field Day May 25 5th grade Ceremony/ Last Day of School I also want to thank several of our staff members (Tracey Abercrombie, Jennifer Elwood, Dotty Fobes, Kristi Hubbard, Rachel McCollum, Kelly Moore, Jo Paget, and Sylvester Ridings), our parents (Amy Anderson, Kara Lurie, and the entire Hendrixson Family), and our awesome fifth grade students for their help this past week sharing with NBC Nightly News the great things Forsyth County is doing with technology in our district and school classrooms. Mr. and Mrs. Hendrixson were gracious enough to invite NBC producers into their home for an in-depth look at how education is changing in our country and in our world. Tracey Abercrombie, Amy Anderson, Kara Lurie, and our district level leaders, Tim Clark and Bailey Mitchell, did an outstanding job during their interviews of highlighting the engaging work our students are involved with. The brief video clip will air this Sunday night at 6:00 pm on NBC Nightly News. I am so proud of our district and our school for receiving recognition for our work! Also, I want to make everyone aware that two of our teachers have been nominated as outstanding educators by the Ron Clark Academy. Leisa Smith and Amanda Wickman were nominated for the best teacher award sponsored by Promethean and the Ron Clark Academy. We would LOVE to see these two deserving teachers win. In order for each lady to win she must have the most likes on her photo on Facebook. The photos of the teachers are located on the Ron Clark Academy Facebook page. Click LIKE on her photo to vote for each one! As soon as you go to the Ron Clark Academy page on Facebook, the photos are under the 2012 teacher nominations. Amanda Wickman’s photo is number 4 of 115. Leisa Smith’s photo is number 115 of 115. Remember just click LIKE on the photo! You are allowed to vote for both ladies. Please do this and spread the word! The last day to vote is May 7th at midnight!! The information will also be on the Coal Mountain Elementary School website and on our Facebook page. Using inquiry-based learning opportunities helps with developing habits of the mind that can last a lifetime and guide learning and creative thinking. Within a conceptual framework, inquiry learning and active learner involvement can lead to important outcomes in and out of the classroom. Students who actively make observations, collect, analyze, and synthesize information, and draw conclusions are developing useful problemsolving skills. These skills can be applied to future "need to know" situations that students will encounter both at school and at work. It's Important for Kids to Read During the Summer 'No more lessons, no more books,' begins the old rhyme. But during the summer, it's important for kids to keep on reading even if school's out. Reading is a skill, and like other skills, it improves with practice. When children read every day, they learn to read faster and understand what they read better. If kids don't read for a month or two, they're likely to lose much of the progress they've made during the past school year. That means they'll have to spend part of next year just catching up to where they are now. It's like taking two steps forward, then one step back. Kids who read during the summer start school ready to continue their progress. In fact, since summer reading can focus on things they are most interested in, some kids will start school reading better than when it ended. Make sure your children spend at least 15 minutes each day reading. Don't worry about what they read, but make sure they read. Encourage your child to sign up for the summer reading program at the library. Summer is a great time to read just for fun, and kids can find books on nearly any subject that takes their fancy. A sports fan might read nothing but sports biographies. Another child might read all the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A third might want to read only poetry. All will benefit from what they have chosen. And all will start school better ready to learn next fall. From The Parent Institute Coal Mountain Elementary Birthday / Special Occasion Book Club We will be changing our birthday / special occasion book club at Coal Mountain. This is a great way to help out our school library and at the same time honor the birthday / special occasion of your child. At the beginning of your child’s birthday / special occasion month, your child will be able to choose a book from a special new book collection. The book will receive a unique inscription inside with your child’s name and birth date. Your child will be the very first to check it out from the library. In addition, a picture will be taken of your child with their book and hung on the Birthday/Special Occasion Book Club display in the lunchroom. (We will honor June and July birthdays / special occasions in May, and next years August birthdays / special occasions in September.) Please complete the form and return it with $17.00. (Checks made out to Coal Mountain Elementary and please include your phone number on the check) All Birthday / Special Occasion Book Club Donations are due by the end of the month before your child’s birthday / special occasion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Please return to Coal Mountain Elementary Media Center Child’s Name as you wish it to be inscribed (please print): Child’s Birthday/ Special Occasion: ____________________________________________________ Teacher’s Name / Grade: _______________________________ Click on the website for more information: http://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/Page/4294 Coal Mountain Elementary appreciates our business partners!
