Course Outline
•This course will cover some of the basic concepts of chemistry including:
 atoms, molecules and ions
 solution stoichiometry, introductory thermochemistry and eletronic structure of atoms
 basic chemical bonding and molecular geometry
 periodic properties of the elements and the properties of gases, liquids and solids.
•The lecture portion of the course will be based on topics covered in CHAPTERS 1-13.
•The full content of the course can only be realized by REGULAR ATTENDANCE in class
and PERFORMING PROBLEMS from the textbook.
•The course webpage has OLD notes and should be used as a GENERAL GUIDELINE only.
IT SHOULD NOT BE USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO REGULAR ATTENDANCE
AND STUDYING.

IMPORTANT NOTES
•You MUST pass the final exam to obtain a passing grade in the course.
•Laboratory and tutorial attendance is MANDATORY.
•A grade of incomplete in the lab will result in a grade of incomplete in the course.
•Students who have previous lab credit (at this University or the equivalent at another
University) should see Ms. Tina Lepine in room 186-1 Essex Hall.

Required to Purchase Before Attending the First Lab:

•Those of you who are repeating the course or have some form of previous laboratory
credit are asked to go see Ms. Tina Lepine in Room 186-1 Essex Hall to make sure that
you are still signed in to a tutorial section.
•Lab sessions will begin on Monday September 26th, 2005. Come prepared to work.

Lab Coat Sales
Lab coats (mandatory to have one) will be sold on the following
days in Lab D in Essex Hall: (Remember, you MUST have one to
enter the lab)
•Friday September 9th, 2005 from 12-3pm
•Monday September 12th, 2005 from 12-3pm
•Wednesday September 14th, 2005 from 12-3pm
•Friday September 16th, 2005 from 12-3pm
•After this time they will be sold in Room 375-5 Essex Hall (ask
for Jenny or Sharonna)
•$3000 CASH ONLY
(ATM located at 7-11 or in the basement of the student centre)
Lab Attendance
Remember, laboratory and tutorial attendance is
MANDATORY.
•Should you miss one (1) lab or tutorial session and provide an
acceptable doctors note you will be excused from that lab or
tutorial and your final lab mark will be adjusted accordingly.
•Should you miss more than one lab or tutorial session (even with
an acceptable doctors note) you will receive a non-negotiable
grade of 0 for each one missed.
•If you anticipate that you are going to miss your assigned lab or
tutorial session, contact Ms. Lepine AHEAD OF TIME to see if
there are alternate arrangements that might be made.
Test and Exam Attendance
Attendance at the midterm and final exam are
MANDATORY.
•Should you miss the midterm examination, your final exam will
be worth the combination of the value of the midterm and final
examinations.
w/ Lab Midterm (15%) + Final (50%) = 65% new value for the
final exam.
w/o Lab Midterm (20%) + Final (60%) = 80% new value for the
final exam.
•THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UP EXAMS
Test and Exam Protocol
• Only writing instruments (pens, pencils, etc…) and calculators will be allowed
on your desk with you.
•Only very basic scientific calculators like the TI30X or equivalent will be
allowed in examinations.
•Any other materials (books, papers, briefcases, etc…) must be deposited away
from any writing desk.
•Any blank paper or necessary tables will be provided.
•No communication between students (verbal, sharing calculators, etc…) is
permitted.
•Place name and student number are on all test booklets used. If using loose
paper make sure that your name and student number are on each sheet.
•ANY EVIDENCE OF CHEATING OR PLAGIARISM WILL BE
IMMEDIATELY REPORTED TO THE OFFICE OF THE DEAN WHERE
THE FINAL DISCIPLINARY DECISION WILL BE MADE (ranging from a
zero on the assignment in question to expulsion from the University)
Appealing Grades
 The formal appeal procedures are outlined in the University Calendar and
Senate Bylaw 51.
 If you wish to make an informal appeal of your grade, the following apply:
 Only tests written in non-erasable ink will be eligible for appeal.
 The basis for the appeal must be given in writing and attached to the test
paper.
 No alterations or additions may be made to the original test paper.
 The appeal must be submitted to your professor before 1:30pm on the Friday
following your test.
 All questions on exams submitted for appeal will be remarked.
 Final exams will not be returned to the students but they may be reviewed by
the student in the professor’s officeafter the test results have been posted.
E-mail Policy
 Make sure to send e-mail from a University of Windsor
address otherwise it may be deleted by the campus server.
 Clearly identify Chemistry 140 in the subject line.
 If you do not hear a reply in 2-3 days, chances are that we
did not receive your message so try again or contact us
during office hours or by telephone.
 Please don’t expect a long-winded response. If you would
like a detailed explanation about something, come and see me
during office hours.
