OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND
The Huawei Innovation Research Program (HIRP) provides funding opportunities to leading universities and
research institutes conducting innovative research in communication technology, computer science, engineering,
and related fields. HIRP seeks to identify and support world-class, full-time faculty members pursuing innovation of
mutual interest. Outstanding HIRP winners may be invited to establish further long-term research collaboration
with Huawei.
Our ongoing programs regularly solicit proposals for funding, either through an open submission process (HIRP
OPEN) or by invitation (HIRP FLAGSHIP).

For the first time the HIRP Flagship program will be open to Australian Universities and Huawei’s Global R&D staff
will be travelling to Australia to look at opportunities to build partnerships with Australian Universities.
Below is an outline of the areas that Huawei R&D is interested in investigating opportunities for partnerships and
funding. Attached is a questionnaire that will help Huawei R&D staff assess any projects that you would like to put
forward for consideration and further investigation.
AREAS OF INTEREST
General:
 Breakthrough technologies, innovations, startups by top universities, dynamic analysis, relevant patents
may be of interests.
Hardware:
 Media, algorithm for storage
 Sensors
 Image process in mobile device
 Audio de-noise, audio enhancing, 3D surround
Network:
 Laser, power saving
Software:
 Software ecosystem, its development model, process, best practice, etc. Not on business model
 Automatic evaluation of architecture (model, algorithm), evaluation of modular, component, SaaS,
evaluation of various software attributes according to ISO 25010 standards, evolution of evaluation
 Modular and SaaS, their methods and tools









High-speed testing for 25Gbps interface
High speed Memory testing algorithm
Computer vision for testing
Testing strategies, modeling, locating, for complex board
Machine learning techniques for board fault estimate and repair

Visualize techniques for elements management, their autonomous computing

Big Data:
 Knowledge database’s automatic building: entity/concept/relationship extraction; automatic knowledge
update & knowledge discovery; the knowledge database’s building based on the Business Scenarios
 The algorithm and technology of big data analysis: Spatial-Temporal Analysis in telecom domain; Social
Analytics in telecom domain
 Data visualization: the innovation components for data exhibition(for different data types: text,high
dimension, Spatio-Temporal, etc); the ability for data exploring, include interaction, the visualization for
analysis process, the visualization for algorithm, etc; data mining & knowledge discovery based on
visualization. Support expert navigational analysis
Cloud Computing Application & Middleware:
 Micro-services research, such as of runtime, management, development for micro-services
 Research of applying the big data technologies to cloud computing platform’s operation
 How migrate to cloud with low cost for telecom industry
Big data application:
 Theory and system of Customer Experience
 Advanced business mechanism design, e.g. case 1. leverage auction/negotiation to achieve cloud service
discovery and price biding; case 2, motivate the MBB(Mobile BrandBand) subscribers to trade their
excess traffic quota by proper incentive mechanism;
 Prediction algorithm of estimated wait time in queuing system, mainly used to accurately predicate the
queue waiting time under a variety of scenarios for call center
Mobile Payment:
 Mobile payment security
 Real time risk control base on big data analysis.
