EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
GBOB - The Global Battle of the Bands - is the world’s biggest music
competition for bands playing their own songs, live. The competition
is open to musicians of all ages, styles, and profession. In each
country, nationwide competitions are conducted by Local
Organizing Partners. The winners from each country will then travel
to the GBOB World Final to compete for the World Title.
From 2012-2013, an estimated 8200 musicians from 23 countries
have competed in GBOB. Since the start in 2004 more than 40,000
musicians have been involved in the competitions.
GBOB competitions represent a unique opportunity to reach out to
young people worldwide. Last year’s World Final in Thailand was
sponsored by Singha and Nok Air; MTV covered the competition
live. Previous/current sponsors around the world include Fuji Film,
Gibson Guitars, Skullcandy, Novotel, Scotia Bank, Red Bull,
Quicksilver, Converse and Air Asia.
According to a recent survey released January 2015 by GroupM, the
world’s largest global media investment management group, “live
music partnerships are the factor most likely to increase positive
feelings and purchase propensity of a brand – 27% higher than
award shows, 15% higher than a sporting event and 14% higher
than a television show partnership.”

“GBOB is not a competition; it’s a

“Other competitions, like PopIdol and X-Factor, are all about
cover-songs. In GBOB there
are only two main rules: play
your own songs, and play it
live. No karaoke, no prerecorded music.”

PAST
JUDGES
“I had a blast being a judge at GBOB. There
wasn’t one single band onstage who didn’t
deserve to be there. I really like the concept
and I hope it grows year on year!”
Steve Lillywhite
Producer – U2, Iggy Pop, The Rolling Stones
“It’s very exciting to have been part of the
foundation of a music event whose reputation
is increasing exponentially. This year’s bands
were given an opportunity to play in front of a
select group of music professionals who can
pluck a band out of obscurity and position them
from worldwide success. Participate now
before GBOB becomes the next SXSW or
CMU!”

“This wasn’t the first time I’ve been judge for a
battle of the bands contest. It was however the
first one I truly enjoyed. ”

TARGET MARKET
“The power of live music for brands
and fans is just that – powerful,”
- says Jennifer Hageney, EVP Entertainment
Partnerships at GroupM Entertainment and
Sports Partnerships (ESP). GroupM is the
world’s largest global media investment
management group.
In a nationally representative survey
(conducted late 2014) of 2,000 Americans, the
US being the biggest music market in the
world, respondents were asked to rank a list of
categories in terms of importance to their
lives. Listening to music is the single most
important medium in consumers’ lives. Music
leads over watching television and reading,
and is well ahead of movies, video games and
social media.
Consumers are hungry for more live music
experiences…. 9 out of 10 of those surveyed
have been to a live music concert or festival in
their lives… Among the unique 18- to 24-yearold group, the number of those that have
attended a concert or festival in the last 12
months soars to 68%.
http://www.groupmnext.com/music
In the survey, nearly 1 out of 3 people who
attended a concert or festival in the last 12
months say they remember the show partner
of the last live event they attended. In
addition, 40% said they would prefer a free
product from a partner, nearly double those
who said they would like a partner to provide
seat upgrades at the show. The mobile nature
of today’s consumer means a brand
partnership is more likely to reach beyond the
walls of the venue than ever before.
“Consumers
say
live
music
partnerships are the factor most
likely to increase positive feelings
and purchase propensity of a brand
– 27% higher than award shows,
15% higher than a sporting event
and 14% higher than a television
show partnership.”
