Literature: H and I Saginaw Bay Area Service Committee of Narcotics Anonymous Subcommittee Report to Area Date: June 15, 2013 Subcommittee Name: H & I __________________________________________________________________________________ Next Committee Meeting (day, time, place): Monday June 17th @ Aldersgate @ 7:50pm Report (Report should include minutes of committee meetings, plans, ideas, motions for initiation, finalization, or implementation and a financial report or request.) Good afternoon family. Currently there is a serious need for volunteers to go into the Freeland Prison on Thursday and Friday nights. There has not been any volunteers’ showing up for the Thursday meeting and there has been a single volunteer carrying the Friday meeting for an extended period of time. If this continues the activities director at the facility will be forced to take us off of their schedule on Thursdays, which they absolutely do not want to do. She is willing to meet for orientation with anyone who is cleared through a lien check at their convenience. Convicted felons must have at least 5 years clean and non-felons must have 1 year clean in order to be considered. ________________________________________________________ One new female has been cleared for the Midland Jail and there is still a need for more volunteers. I have not gotten a clear set of guidelines for clearance at the jail, but they will run lien checks upon request after which they will make a determination. Potential volunteers must have 1 year clean in order to be considered. Anyone interested in getting involved with H & I Area Minutes February 2013 Page 3 service please call me (989-708-6127), email me (Jdub198425@yahoo.com) or show up Monday night for our subcommittee meeting. ____________________________________________________ As far as J&A’s outpatient offices in Midland. I am not requesting any money this month since I didn’t spent any. ILS, Jason W.______________________________________________________________ If you cannot attend the area meeting, please mail in or have your group report presented for you. The address is: SBASCNA, PO BOX 51, BAY CITY, MI 48707-0051 Suggested Behavior at Institutions, Jails and Prisons These suggestions are taken from institution rules, state law, and the Narcotics Anonymous H&I Handbook. Each institution has its own guidelines which an NA H&I member must follow when doing service. Dress appropriately: • Clean, simple clothing. Don’t wear the following: • No see through clothing. No sweat suits. • No tank tops, sports bras, sleeveless t-shirts, or shorts. • No shirts with logos (NA or anything else). • No short skirts or low cut blouses/dresses. • No yellow rain slickers or long umbrellas. • Excessive, expensive or religious jewelry. Be friendly, but not overly familiar: Check with the institution regarding their rules about hugging and handshaking: When introduced or saying goodbye, if the institution rules prohibit hugging, then shake hands only. You may create an unsafe situation by the close physical contact which occurs as a result of hugging. Do not give out personal information such as: • Last name • Address • Phone number • Place of employment • Children’s names • Family pictures • Anything that can be used for identity theft Area Minutes February 2013 Page 4 Ask permission: Ask the NA coordinator for permission before doing anything for or giving anything to an inmate, resident, client or patient. They will tell you what is and is not within the rules. If you have any doubts, don’t do it. Never give anything except NA literature that is distributed by H&I. We are only there to give the NA message of recovery. Don’t offer rides or other assistance to anyone getting out. (Jobs/housing/money/loans, etc.) Do not bring messages to inmates or carry messages out for inmates. If an inmate wants to know how to find you when they get out it is alright to tell them what meeting they can go to in order to see you. No other information is appropriate. When you share your NA Recovery: • Remember that we are there to help inmates learn a better way to live. They will model our behavior. Please make it attractive. • Stay focused on a clear message of recovery in Narcotics Anonymous using appropriate NA language. • Minimize profanity. (It is not necessary to swear to get anyone to identify with us) • Avoid sexual history. • Do not be drug specific. • Short ‘war stories’ are acceptable. • Addicts come to meetings to learn how to stay clean and to hear what you do on a daily basis to that end, not because they need to hear more about the insanity of the disease. When in prisons or jails: Please be courteous to and cooperate with the correctional officers and staff at all times. Follow their instructions immediately and without argument. (Your safety and/or your life may depend on it.) Remember that you are in a prison or jail. These women and men are here for good reasons. • Do not discuss their crimes. • Do not express any opinions on: how they are treated, what the staff does or does not do, any DOC policies, state laws, prison rules, or any other outside issues. • Do not allow yourself to be manipulated. • Do not argue with the inmates. • Do not be sarcastic or demeaning to the inmates. • Do not tell off color or racial jokes. Area Minutes February 2013 Page 5 • Do not feel sorry for these men/women. • Do keep firm boundaries about your personal space and information. • Be aware that over 80% of these men/women are repeat offenders with a different agenda than the one that you have. Their intentions may be good right now, but that can change quickly. • Do remember that there may be predators at these meetings who are not interested in recovery, but how they can use you. The custody screening process does not prevent them from attending NA. Please understand that, although this seems like a lot to remember, it is for your protection, the good of the fellowship, and to preserve our good relationship with the institution. Public Relations: Open Retreat: S.B.A.S.C.N.A. Retreat Subcommittee Report June 15, 2013 The final wrap up meeting is scheduled for June 24th at 6:00 pm in Bay City at Trinity Episcopal Church, (Unity NA Group Meeting Location). I apologize for my absence again today, it seems all my family events have been scheduled the same day as Area, which it appears will also be the case in July. The Invoice has finally been sent to us but not received as of yet. I have seen the final bill which was e-mailed to me on Wednesday and it appears there will be a donation from the Retreat to Area in July. This has been forwarded to the Retreat Treasurer to complete the final committee transaction. Cathy H. this year’s Co-Chair has the willingness to move into the Retreat Chair position and will plan on attending the July Area meeting to express her willingness, accept the nomination and if so desired by the Area, be elected into the position. Remember all members are invited to attend the committee meetings and all are encouraged to get involved. It has been an honor to serve on this committee and look forward to being involved with next year’s committee.
