3.48 Principal semiconductor device: Primary component of a computer server that runs the operating system and applications.

Holly Elwood definition of principal semiconductor

The definition of “principal semiconductor device” seems similar to the ENERGY STAR servers definition of

“Processor” in V2.0. The Energy Star “processor” definition is well defined and industry accepted

STAR V2.0 definition of

Processor.

From ES: Processor: The logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic instructions that drive a server. For purposes of this specification, the processor is the central processing unit (CPU) of the computer server. A typical CPU is a physical package to be installed on the server motherboard via a socket or direct solder attachment. The CPU package may include one or more processor cores.

Proposed response: Both terms “principal semiconductor device” and “processor” are used in the standard, and appear to be used interchangeably. If they are indeed used interchangeably, the t erm “processor” will be used only and the Energy Star definition. Here are some examples of use of the terms:

Manufacturer shall publicly report annually toxics release data for the following three types of components for servers (principal storage device(s); principal semiconductor device(s); and printed circuit board(s)) from each of the top three suppliers (by spend) for each component.

Replacement components shall include, at a minimum, power supplies, fans, hard drives, memory, processors and printed circuit boards.

The definition of computer servers used in this standard is given in the ENERGY STAR

Program Requirements for Computer Servers Version 2.0: blade, multi-node, rackmounted, or pedestal form factor computer servers with no more than four processor sockets in the computer server (or per blade or node in the case of blade or multi-node servers).

3.49 Printed circuit board assembly: Printed circuit board with mounted chips and components.
