CURRICULAR ASPECTS
Thiruthangal Nadar College of Arts and Science was established in the year 1997 by
the Chennaivazh Thiruthangal Hindu Nadar Uravinmurai Dharma Fund (A Charitable fund of
Thiruthangal Hindu Nadars living in Chennai).The College has been functioning to cater to
the academic needs of a backward area purely with an altruistic ideal of providing higher
education at a moderate cost without any discrimination of caste or creed. The College
functions as a self-financing institution without any grant or aid or subsidies from the
government towards its maintenance. At the time of establishment the College served only
men. To pave way for women empowerment Thiruthangal Nadar College became a coeducational institution from the academic year 2002-2003. Additional facilities are provided
for the women students to enable them to strive towards their goals.
The whole hearted commitment of the Management has governed and guided the
College towards excellence from the day of its inception. The College serves with the motto
“Knowledge is Power”, which is a universally acclaimed truth. The College emblem in bright
red which stands for the vigour and brightness of youth reinforces the motto of the College
and conveys the message that as the Sun dispels darkness, the knowledge imparted by the
institution removes ignorance. The College envisages to mould the career of the students
which in turn will shape their future. The College works towards inculcating academic,
professional and ethical values into individuals to make them emerge as responsible citizens
with calibre and confidence .Thiruthangal Nadar College endeavours to instill the need of the
hour qualities like competence, confidence and excellence into every student to enable them to
leave a positive and lasting impression in the society.
1.1. CURRICULUM DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
1.1.1. State the vision, mission and objectives of the institution and describe how these
are communicated to the students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders.
The vision and mission statements of the College are structured after careful
speculation of the prevailing trends and after foreseeing the transformation in the expectation
of the society from each individual who emerge into it from this institution.

To disseminate knowledge and foster in our students positive and critical
thinking besides intellectual skills to become empowered beings.

MISSION
To provide quality and need-based education to students with facilities of
higher education.


 To inculcate the values of character, honesty and integrity.
 To enable the students to think and design their future.
 To develop self-reliant individuals.
 To shape the multi-faceted personality of students.
MEDIUMS OF COMMUNICATION OF THE VISION AND MISSION

Management meetings
The members of the management play a pivotal role in the effective
functioning of the College. They make it a point to meet periodically to
discuss regarding the development of the College and they contribute in
many ways towards the framing of the vision and mission of the
College according to the rising need.

Academic Council meetings
The College conducts academic council meetings, where the heads of
the departments and the teaching fraternity are perpetually updated
about the decision of the management to help them stay in vogue with
the vision, mission and the goal of the College.

College Website
The College website offers an easy access to the general public as well
as the staff and students of the College and provides information about
the vision and mission of the College.

College Prospectus
Every academic year the College brings out a well designed prospectus
which enables the aspirers to know about the College, infrastructure

and amenities, courses offered, eligibility criteria, scholarship details,
rules and regulations of the College, fees structure, admission
procedure and a special mention about the healthy practice of not
collecting capitation fee or donation in any form.

College Calendar
Every year the College publishes an academic calendar for the usage of
the students and faculty which includes the history of the College,
personal memoranda of the student, the vision, mission and goal of the
College, rules and regulations, details of the office bearers, faculty and
supporting staff, academic calendar, important events ,co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities of the College

Registered Alumni Association
The alumni association enables the College to maintain a good
relationship with the alumnae through which they are updated about the
happenings of the College which includes the vision and mission of the
College.

Parents Teachers Association
The parents teachers association serves as an extended platform where
exchange of ideas is made possible for the development of the College
and the students where in the parents are informed about the vision and
mission of the College.

The Vision and Mission made prominent
The carefully designed vision and mission of the College is displayed in
prominent areas like the College office, corridors, library etc to inspire
the students and faculty towards the achievement of the goal of the
College.

College Magazine
The College brings out a news letter or a magazine now and then which
records the happenings of the academic year and displays the vision and
mission of the College ensuring that whoever reads through it will
become familiar with the ultimate goal of the College.

The College highlights the events happening within the College to the
society by advertisements given through press releases which make
everyone in the society to become aware of the service rendered by the
institution for the betterment of the students as well as the society.
1.1.2.
How does the institution develop and deploy action plans for effective
implementation of the curriculum?
THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE
CURRICULUM

The College being affiliated to the University of Madras follows the
curriculum framed by the University. The syllabus is designed and upgraded
with the consent of the syndicate and senate members of the University of
Madras. Whenever there is a change in the curriculum the College is intimated
by the University and in turn it is communicated to the respective departments
to enable the implementation of the change.

The heads of the departments conduct a meeting with their faculty and discuss
on the allotment of papers and lesson plans taking into consideration the
number of working days as per the academic calendar issued by the University
of Madras.

The prescribed syllabus is meticulously taught to the students using various
teaching methodologies which include traditional methods like chalk and talk
method as well as modern methods which involve presentations, seminars,
group discussions etc.

The curriculum is implemented in a practical manner through industrial visits
and field work which enables the students to understand the challenges they are
about to face in the near future in a much better way.

Students with special problems and slow learners are identified and special
attention is paid to them to enhance their skills.

Feedback collected at regular intervals and result analysis enables in further
improvisation of the delivery of the curriculum.

1.1.3. What type of support do the teachers receive for effectively translating the
curriculum and improving teaching practices?
ENCOURAGEMENT RENDERED TO TEACHERS FOR TEACHING PRACTICES
AND EFFECTIVE CURRICULUM DELIVERY

The College begins every semester with an interactive meeting for the faculty
which enables them to get inspired and understand the service they have to
render.

The College encourages the faculty to create a lesson plan to implement
effective teaching.

The College provides internet connectivity to each department to facilitate the
staff to improvise their teaching and evaluation methods. At all times all the
possible measures are taken by the College to help the faculty to enhance their
cognition and calibre.
1.1.4.
Specify the initiatives taken up or contribution made by the institution for
effective curriculum delivery and transaction on the curriculum provided by the
affiliating University or other statutory agency.
STEPS TAKEN FOR EFFECTUAL DELIVERY OF THE CURRICULUM

The College has entrusted the work of preparing workload and time table to the
heads of the departments. Every semester they ensure that the curriculum is
delivered effectively and continuous evaluation is monitored through regular
class tests, mid-semester and model examinations.

Apart from the traditional teaching methodology the students are given the
freedom to present papers, participate in group discussions etc., which makes
learning an interesting task for them.

Even though the curriculum is designed by the University of Madras, the
College takes an additional step of incorporating practical measures like
workshops and seminars into the existing curriculum. Through these measures
the College focuses on the overall development of students by encouraging
them to enhance their skills having employability as the major consideration.
Through these ventures the students get the chance of meeting experts from
various fields which is a source of inspiration to them and enables them to look
at the curriculum in a whole new angle.

The placement cell of the College functions effectively by training the
students through a number of workshops to face the interviews
confidently and secure a placement.
Using its tie-up with various
MNCs and organizations it arranges campus interviews through which
many of the emerging graduates step out as professionals.

1.1.6. What are the contributions of the institution and/or its staff members to the
development of the curriculum by the University?
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT-CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE STAFF

The College being affiliated to the University of Madras strictly
adheres to the curriculum by the University of Madras. The faculties
serve in many ways towards the designing, implementation and
evaluation of the curriculum.

The faculty brainstorms and discusses the relevance of the syllabus
designed by the University and effective ways to impart it in the
classroom.

The faculty is in touch with their counterparts in the affiliating
University which enables them to get the latest information regarding
their respective subjects. The connection of the faculty with the parent
University serves to be an additional element which gives them enough
light about the curriculum.

The Principal of the College is a Syndicate, Senate, Standing
Committee and academic council member of the University of Madras.
He attends all the academic related meetings of the University and
contributes significantly to the curriculum at the University level.

The College being affiliated to the University of Madras does not enjoy
the freedom to frame its own curriculum for any of the academic
programmes. However, the College attempts to supplement the syllabus
by arranging special classes, seminars and presentations by inviting
experts from various fields.


The College plans for a well organized delivery of the curriculum. The continuous evaluation
system helps in monitoring the outcome of the syllabus. This helps to focus on the areas
which need special attention.

During the academic session regular evaluations in the form of class
tests, continuous internal assessment, mid-semester and model
examination, assignments and seminars are conducted to gauge the
effects and defects of the teaching and learning process.

The College has OHP facility in selective areas which is used
periodically to make an attempt on innovative teaching methodologies.
1.2. ACADEMIC FLEXIBILITY
1.2.1. Specifying the goals and objectives give details of the certificate/diploma/skill
development courses, offered by the institution.

Having in mind the arising needs of the society at the state, national and global
level the College offers a list of UG and PG courses which are duly affiliated
to the University of Madras. Apart from this the College proposes to conduct
add on certificate courses like Marketing, E-Com etc., for the benefit of the
students. The College has sent an application of intent to its parent University
and awaits its consent to start the extended courses and move forth with its new
ventures.

1.2.2. Does the institution offer programmes that facilitates twinning/dual degree?

The College offers a five year integrated course M.Sc (CS&T) which admits
students who have obtained HSC or its equivalent qualification. Apart from
this even though the College does not offer any dual degree programmes it
extends its support to the students who pursue additional certificate or diploma
courses by giving them expertise guidance and by helping them with the
necessary materials.

CHOICE OF ELECTIVES

The College offers 11 UG and 2 PG academic programmes in arts and science
discipline. All UG and PG courses follow the semester system with Choice
Based Credit System (CBCS) introduced by the University of Madras in the
year 2008-2009.
The UG programmes follow the prescribed pattern which includes Part-I
(Language), Part-II (English), Core, Electives and Part-IV (Non-Major

.CREDIT SYSTEM

The University of Madras has designed the CBCS and Credit accumulation and
on its recommendation the College follows it. Every UG student is expected to
secure 139 credits out of the given syllabus and 1 from participating in any
extension activities like NSS, Sports and co-curricular activities during the 3
year period of study. All UG students should earn a minimum of 140 credits
and PG students should earn a minimum of 86 credits to be eligible for the
degree.
MOBILITY WITHIN AND ACROSS PROGRAMMES AND COURSES

The UG courses offered by the University of Madras allow lateral entry of
students with diploma in ITI into II year of BCA, B.Com (General) and B.Com
(CS). Likewise, the students enjoy the freedom of undergoing a non-major
elective course during the degree programme which brings mobility across
discipline and enables knowledge transfer.
ENRICHING COURSES

The College offers Soft Skills, Personality Development and Value Education
courses to instill life skills into the students. These courses develop the
personality of the students and prepare them for their career as well as life
ahead. While Soft Skills, Personality Development and Value Education
address the issues of employability and life skills the question of civic sense
and citizenship is addressed by the Environmental Studies programme.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Admission to all the above mentioned courses is done based on merit as per the
guidelines given by the University of Madras and TANSCHE (Tamil Nadu
State Council for Higher Education).
CURRICULUM

The curriculum is designed by the University of Madras and the College takes
all possible measures to implement the curriculum through well received
delivery patterns.
FEES STRUCTURE

The College collects reasonable fees from the students based on the amount
prescribed by the government.
TEACHERS’ QUALIFICATION

The College appoints duly qualified and experienced faculty and after the
appointment of the faculty their qualification approval is sought from the
University of Madras.

REMUNERATION

The College recognizes the service rendered by the teachers by awarding them
with a decent salary.
1.2.5. Does the College provide additional skill oriented programmes, relevant to
regional and global employment markets? If ‘yes’, provide details of such programmes
and the beneficiaries.

The College conducts workshops and seminars on Personality Development
and Communication Skills to make the students competent and employable.
Now and then, guest speakers are invited from various industries to brief the
students about regional and global employment opportunities for the students.
Special classes are taken for slow learners who seek special attention. Apart
from this, the College proposes to conduct many skill oriented programmes
like Tally, E-Com etc. in the near future.
1.2.6. Does the University provide for the flexibility of combining the conventional faceto -face and distance mode of education for students to choose the courses/ combination
of their choice. If ‘yes’, how does the institution take advantage of such provision for the
benefit of students?

The University of Madras does not allow the flexibility of combining
conventional face-to -face and distance mode of education. But, the University
provides the flexibility for the students to change from the conventional faceto-face regular course of study to distance mode of education. When such
requests are raised, the College facilitates the process to move from regular to
distance mode of education by adhering to the norms of the University.
1.3. CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT
1.3.1. Describe the efforts made by the institution to supplement the University’s
curriculum to ensure that the academic programmes and institution’s goals and
objectives are integrated?

The College being affiliated to the University of Madras does not enjoy the
freedom of formulating its own curriculum. But, the College takes immense
care in the effective delivery of the prescribed syllabus using various

interactive teaching methodologies. The College ensures that the curriculum
prescribed by the University is justified to the maximum. The College also
makes sure that the way of imparting the curriculum goes hand in hand with
the mission and vision of the College.
1.3.2. What are the efforts made by the institution to modify, enrich and organize the
curriculum to explicitly reflect the experiences of the students and cater to needs of the
dynamic employment market?
EXTENSION PROGRAMMES OFFERED TO AID ENRICHMENT OF THE
CURRICULUM

The College delivers the curriculum prescribed by the University of Madras in
a very effective and well planned manner which is supplemented with various
academic programmes and enrichment programmes to meet the institutional
goals and objectives.

The placement cell of the College interacts with the MNCs and organizations
in a regular basis and collects information about the demands and expectations
of the corporate sector regarding the skill set of students. These demands are
met by special training programmes and workshops which enhance the
possibilities of employability.

The College encourages the students to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular events like inter-departmental competitions, sports and games and
inter-collegiate competitions which educate the students with various life skills
required to meet the challenges that awaits them in future.

The College inculcates social responsibility in the students through the NSS
(National Service Scheme), Red Ribbon Club (RRC) and Youth Red Cross
(YRC) activities. These activities make the students to understand the
importance of the service they have to render to the society.

The College ensures that the students are tuned to be socially responsible.
Cross cutting issues like Gender, Climate Change, Human Rights, ICT and
other critical issues are well addressed and incorporated in the curriculum
through environmental science studies and extension activities.

The College has Ragging Redressal Committee, Grievance Redressal
Committee, Disciplinary Committee and Girls Welfare Committee to solve
most of the Cross Cutting issues.

The College addresses issues like climate change, global warming and
other environment related issues through the environmental studies
programme which is a part of the curriculum designed by the University of
Madras. This programme educates the students on conservation of natural
resources, hygiene, recycling facts, proper disposal of waste etc.,

The College contributes to social issues through NSS (National Service
Scheme), RRC (Red Ribbon Club) and YRC (Youth Red Cross) activities.
Through these activities students are taught to serve one another which is a
key factor to be a part of any society.
1.3.4. What are the various value-added courses/enrichment programmes offered to
ensure holistic development of students?
VALUE ADDED COURSES
The College gives enough importance to value added courses. It inculcates social
responsibility and ethical values through various programmes. It encourages students to
participate in the camps organized by the NSS wings and other services extended towards the
society to motivate the students to take up social service in a serious tone.
MORAL AND ETHICAL VALUES

Value Education which is a part of the curriculum prescribed by the
University educates the students on moral and ethical values. The
College tries to inculcate these values by inviting dignitaries to address
the students on the importance of moral and ethical values in life. The
NSS units of the College regularly visits villages that need helping
hands and provide awareness on social, moral and ethical principles
required to lead a modest life.

EMPLOYABILITY AND LIFE SKILLS

The College conducts a number of workshops, special classes and
seminars on Communication Skills and Personality Development by
which the chances of employability is widened and life skills is imbibed
into the life stream of the students.
BETTER CAREER OPTIONS

The placement cell of the College functions effectively and trains the
students to face challenges with confidence. Using its vast network, it
arranges campus interviews through which many of the students are
benefited.
COMMUNITY ORIENTATION

The College understands its role in the society and encourages
extension activities rendered by NSS (National Service Scheme), RRC
(Red Ribbon Club) and YRC (Youth Red Cross). The NSS students
adopt villages on a regular basis and work towards the upliftment of the
villages. The YRC, RRC and NSS units conduct a blood donation camp
every year which helps to save numerous people. The College being a
part of the community understands its vitality to serve the community
and gives enough importance to serve the society.

holders in enriching the curriculum.

The College gives enough importance to the opinion of the students, teachers,
parents and stake holders. Feedback is collected at regular intervals from
students, teachers, parents, alumni and stake holders and this helps in
identifying the quality of education and enables rectification whenever required
through corrective measures. The Grievance Redressal Committee of the
College also looks into all the issues and provides suggestions and solutions for
grievances.

THE COLLEGE COMMITTEE

The College has constituted a College Committee, consisting of Principal, VicePrincipals and Heads of the Departments to assess the level of the academic
quality.
MONITORING THE QUALITY OF ENRICHING PROGRAMMES

The College monitors all the enrichment programmes like Personality
Development and Communication Skills and evaluates the quality of such
programmes through lesson plan, completion of syllabus, student follow up
program, result analysis, feedback system, placement records etc.
COLLEGE GOVERNING COUNCIL

The College has a College Governing Council and a College Committee which
comprises of the Members of the Management, Principal, Vice-Principals and
Heads of the Departments who assess, monitor and ensure the quality of
academic services provided to the students along with the facilities and other
support services provided to the students in the College.

1.4.1. What are the contributions of the institution in the design and development
of the curriculum prepared by the University?

The College is affiliated to the University of Madras and hence follows the
curriculum prescribed by the University. The College does not attempt to make
any changes in the curriculum however it tries to enrich it using innovative
methods. Whenever a feedback is received regarding the curriculum, the
College tries to take it to the notice of the University through its representatives
who are part of the Academic Council of the University.

MECHANISM USED TO OBTAIN FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS

The College collects feedback from all the students on the faculty members
regarding punctuality of faculty, the way they encourage the students, the role
played by them in the overall development of the students, help rendered by
them to the students to overcome their personal/ academic problem etc. These
feedbacks are viewed seriously and necessary measures are taken to enable the
faculty members to provide their best support towards the development of the
students.
FEEDBACK ON TRAINING PROGRAMMES

The College offers many training programmes to the students and feedback of
the students on these programmes are collected promptly. These feedbacks are
taken into consideration to improvise the training methodology.
MECHANISM USED TO COLLECT FEEDBACKS FROM PARENTS

The College conducts Parents-Teacher Association meetings on a regular basis
which facilitates the College to collect feedback from the parents on factors like
quality of education and educators, communication skills of the students,
improvement in the overall behavior of the students etc. These factors are taken
into consideration while imparting holistic education.
