Criterion I – Curricular Aspects CRITERION I CURRICULAR ASPECTS Thiruthangal Nadar College of Arts and Science was established in the year 1997 by the Chennaivazh Thiruthangal Hindu Nadar Uravinmurai Dharma Fund (A Charitable fund of Thiruthangal Hindu Nadars living in Chennai).The College has been functioning to cater to the academic needs of a backward area purely with an altruistic ideal of providing higher education at a moderate cost without any discrimination of caste or creed. The College functions as a self-financing institution without any grant or aid or subsidies from the government towards its maintenance. At the time of establishment the College served only men. To pave way for women empowerment Thiruthangal Nadar College became a coeducational institution from the academic year 2002-2003. Additional facilities are provided for the women students to enable them to strive towards their goals. The whole hearted commitment of the Management has governed and guided the College towards excellence from the day of its inception. The College serves with the motto “Knowledge is Power”, which is a universally acclaimed truth. College Calendar Every year the College publishes an academic calendar for the usage of the students and faculty which includes the history of the College, personal memoranda of the student, the vision, mission and goal of the College, rules and regulations, details of the office bearers, faculty and supporting staff, academic calendar, important events ,co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of the College Registered Alumni Association The alumni association enables the College to maintain a good relationship with the alumnae through which they are updated about the happenings of the College which includes the vision and mission of the College. Parents Teachers Association The parents teachers association serves as an extended platform where exchange of ideas is made possible for the development of the College and the students where in the parents are informed about the vision and mission of the College. How does the institution develop and deploy action plans for effective implementation of the curriculum? THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CURRICULUM The College being affiliated to the University of Madras follows the curriculum framed by the University. The syllabus is designed and upgraded with the consent of the syndicate and senate members of the University of Madras. Whenever there is a change in the curriculum the College is intimated by the University and in turn it is communicated to the respective departments to enable the implementation of the change. The heads of the departments conduct a meeting with their faculty and discuss on the allotment of papers and lesson plans taking into consideration the number of working days as per the academic calendar issued by the University of Madras. The prescribed syllabus is meticulously taught to the students using various teaching methodologies which include traditional methods like chalk and talk method as well as modern methods which involve presentations, seminars, group discussions etc. The curriculum is implemented in a practical manner through industrial visits and field work which enables the students to understand the challenges they are about to face in the near future in a much better way. Students with special problems and slow learners are identified and special attention is paid to them to enhance their skills. ENCOURAGEMENT RENDERED TO TEACHERS FOR TEACHING PRACTICES AND EFFECTIVE CURRICULUM DELIVERY The College begins every semester with an interactive meeting for the faculty which enables them to get inspired and understand the service they have to render. The College encourages the faculty to create a lesson plan to implement effective teaching. The College provides internet connectivity to each department to facilitate the staff to improvise their teaching and evaluation methods. At all times all the possible measures are taken by the College to help the faculty to enhance their cognition and calibre. 1.1.4. Criterion I – Curricular Aspects The College plans for a well organized delivery of the curriculum. The continuous evaluation system helps in monitoring the outcome of the syllabus. This helps to focus on the areas which need special attention. During the academic session regular evaluations in the form of class tests, continuous internal assessment, mid-semester and model examination, assignments and seminars are conducted to gauge the effects and defects of the teaching and learning process. The College has OHP facility in selective areas which is used periodically to make an attempt on innovative teaching methodologies. 1.2. ACADEMIC FLEXIBILITY 1.2.1. Specifying the goals and objectives give details of the certificate/diploma/skill development courses, offered by the institution. Criterion I – Curricular Aspects .CREDIT SYSTEM The University of Madras has designed the CBCS and Credit accumulation and on its recommendation the College follows it. Every UG student is expected to secure 139 credits out of the given syllabus and 1 from participating in any extension activities like NSS, Sports and co-curricular activities during the 3 year period of study. All UG students should earn a minimum of 140 credits and PG students should earn a minimum of 86 credits to be eligible for the degree. The placement cell of the College interacts with the MNCs and organizations in a regular basis and collects information about the demands and expectations of the corporate sector regarding the skill set of students.
