Objective: Provide IT staff with knowledge of WolfWise mobile device integration options for their end-users and an opportunity for Q&A with OIT staff experienced with configuring these services Challenges • Variety of devices and high frequency of mobile/pim/smartphone hardware device offerings • Use of these devices is highly personalized and user-specific. • Variety of connectivity options, including tethered vs. untethered, wireless (bluetooth, wifi, cellular data services) Technical architecture See PDF on WolfWise website at: http://www.ncsu.edu/oitcal/mobile/index.php WolfWise Mobile Device Support options 1. Blackberry Enterprise Sever (BES) High-touch., paid service. Approx. 300 users on campus 2. GroupWise Mobile Server (GMS or GWMS) for Windows Mobile et al. Free service. OIT provides limited support (canned vendor docs) 3. NotifyLink for iPhone Paid service through OIT. Outsources support to vendor, who provides hosted solution 4. Direct IMAP connection for email only Free service. OIT provides limited support (docs for connection setup) 5. GWWEB provides Wireless Markup Language (WML) interface Support structure in OIT Tiered support • Tier 1 - NC State Help Desk. Tested on campus this spring. Features limited by smartphone’s email client. Providers may block port 25 SMTP. Use their SMTP servers. Set up Consult device’s email client instructions Server: gwimap.ncsu.edu or unityid.mail.ncsu.edu with SSL on Port 993 NOTE: WolfWise requires IMAP over SSL. Cyrus supports SSL but does not require it. GWWEB provides WML interface WML-enabled web browsers on smartphones with internet access http://gwweb.ncsu.edu (GW web client) Capabilities: • very similar to regular web client, but optimized for mobile devices • email • calendar • address book Drawbacks: • no busy searching • can't send attachments • lack of notifications • pull, not push Support/Documentation: • WebAccess is fully supported by OIT • Usage documentation: GW Instant Messenger GW Instant Messenger Free Blackberry client. No GWIM client available on other smartphones. • Offers an integrated directory and encryption. • All WolfWise users have access automatically. • Open-source Pidgin chat also supports the GroupWise Instant Messenger protocol. • Chat rooms are possible – OIT would like to gauge interest to determine whether to support his feature.
