Training objectives
IT staff training
In addition to this class, we’re holding two sessions for WolfWise Migration Support
Training for IT staff.
Objective:
Provide IT staff with knowledge of WolfWise mobile device integration options for their
end-users and an opportunity for Q&A with OIT staff experienced with configuring these
services
Challenges
• Variety of devices and high frequency of mobile/pim/smartphone hardware
device offerings
• Use of these devices is highly personalized and user-specific.
• Variety of connectivity options, including tethered vs. untethered, wireless
(bluetooth, wifi, cellular data services)

WolfWise Mobile Device Support options
1.
Blackberry Enterprise Sever (BES)
High-touch., paid service. Approx. 300 users on campus
2.
GroupWise Mobile Server (GMS or GWMS) for Windows Mobile et al.
Free service. OIT provides limited support (canned vendor docs)
3.
NotifyLink for iPhone
Paid service through OIT. Outsources support to vendor, who provides hosted
solution
4.
Direct IMAP connection for email only
Free service. OIT provides limited support (docs for connection setup)
5.
GWWEB provides Wireless Markup Language (WML) interface

Tiered support
• Tier 1 - NC State Help Desk. Call logging and triage.
• Tier 2 - Local IT support in collaboration with new WolfWise support position
• Tier 3 - Campus Messaging

Blackberry Enterprise Sever (BES)

 Supported by OIT at Tier 1, 2 and 3 levels
 Supports push email and calendar sync
 Supports GroupWise Instant Messenger (GWIM) with free client

NOTE: one-time setup fee of $200 is going to be changed to include an annual service
fee. Changes not yet determined but likely to take effect July 1.
GroupWise Mobile Server (GWMS)
GWMS
 Free service . Approx. 150 users on campus
 Supported by OIT only at via documentation. Community-support
 Supports OTA (over the air) setup of various smartphone OS’s including Windows
Mobile and Symbian
 Supports email and calendar sync with directory integration
 Does not support GroupWise Instant Messenger (GWIM)

GroupWise Mobile Server (GWMS)

NotifyLink for iPhone
NotifyLink
 Paid service. $138/year. Tested on campus this spring.
 Vendor provides support, with accounts and payment administered by OIT
 Capabilities:
• email and calendar OTA syncing (uses native iPhone apps)
• Exchange-like push
• new mail/appt notification
• appt reminder notification
 Drawbacks:
• can only schedule posted appts
• will not provide access to mail prior to syncing
• initial folder subscription issue
• no high priority notification

Direct IMAP connections
IMAP Clients on smartphones with internet access
Scheduled pull can approximate push email.
Features limited by smartphone’s email client.
Providers may block port 25 SMTP. Use their SMTP servers.
Set up
Consult device’s email client instructions
Server: gwimap.ncsu.edu or unityid.mail.ncsu.edu with SSL on Port 993
NOTE: WolfWise requires IMAP over SSL. Cyrus supports SSL but does not require it.
GWWEB provides WML interface
WML-enabled web browsers on smartphones with internet access

Capabilities:
• very similar to regular web client, but optimized for mobile devices
• email
• calendar
• address book
Drawbacks:
• no busy searching
• can't send attachments
• lack of notifications
• pull, not push
Support/Documentation:
• WebAccess is fully supported by OIT

GW Instant Messenger
GW Instant Messenger
Free Blackberry client. No GWIM client available on other smartphones.
• Offers an integrated directory and encryption.
• All WolfWise users have access automatically.
• Open-source Pidgin chat also supports the GroupWise Instant Messenger protocol.
• Chat rooms are possible – OIT would like to gauge interest to determine whether to
support his feature.

NOTE: Pidgin does not support the chat room feature.

Looking ahead…
GWMS moving to ActiveSync
• Current GWMS service is based on Intellisync by Nokia, which has announced
discontinuation of the product.
• Novell has announced a replacement solution based on ActiveSync, but will continue to
support the current Intellisync based GWMS service for two more years
• ActiveSync solution will provide more options, including support for iPhones
GroupWise Web Client
• GW8 has new version with improvements to be evaluated after Oracle Calendar
migration.
