Definition: E-book
A book that has been digitized and is available
online. Because e-books usually exist in print
and online versions, they are different from
websites. The content in e-books has gone
through an editorial process that helps to
establish and verify its information.

E-book Capabilities
An electronic book is typically delivered over a
computer network. E-book capabilities vary
by vendor, but most offer hyperlink navigation
and keyword searching within the text.
Printing and downloading functions are
usually available, but are restricted to protect
copyrights.

To find books by title, click on the appropriate
Books collection alphabetical letter.
Note that there is a View complete list of
books option although this drop down menu
does not have hypertext links to the specific
titles. You will need to go back to the Books
collection A-Z list to open any e-books.
We have opened the A list from the Books
collection list. In January 2013, the John Wiley
books were added to the e-book collection.
Including the Elsevier e-books, there are over
20,000 titles.
Note, in the highlighted box, that the list includes
non health-related titles. You will need time to
locate the titles that will be of use to you.
Now opened is the O list from the Books collection
A-Z list. Again, the format is divided into
Accessible Content (the default) and All Items
options. This example is for an institution where
the titles are included in the publishers’ offer. Note
the two titles from Oxford University Press.
We now have opened is the O list from the Books
collection A-Z list - for an institution where many
titles are not included in the publishers’ offer.
Note that there are only 2 items in the Accessible
Content list. In the All Items display option, most
of the titles will have the white box with the
exclamation point.
The Oxford Textbook of Medicine is one of the
foremost international textbooks of internal medicine.
It provides practical guidance on the clinical
management and prevention of disease, with indepth coverage of the traditional specialty areas.
Scroll down this page to the ‘expandable’ table of
contents that details the contents of each topic.
The initial Contents page now is displayed.
We will open Chapter 8 (Sexually Transmitted
Diseases).
Note the list of Subjects(s) in Oxford Medicine.
After scrolling down the page, we now
view the opened chapter and will click on
the link to Chapter 8.1 – Epidemiology of
sexually transmitted infections.
Displayed is the Epidemiology of
sexually transmitted infections
sub-chapter. Note the option to
Download chapter (pdf).
We have displayed the
Introduction of this subchapter. Note the links to
View-full sized figure and
also the option to Download
figure as PowerPoint slide.
Another invaluable resource is The Oxford Handbook
of Tropical Medicine, 3rd edition. This handbook
provides an accessible and comprehensive, signsand-symptoms based source of information on
medical problems commonly seen in the tropics. It
serves as a practical guide to diagnosis and
management for medical practitioners and students.
This handbook contains the same features as the
previously discussed Oxford Textbook of Medicine.
We have opened a section of
the ’C’ listing from the Find
books by title A-Z drop down
menu. We will look at titles
from Elsevier and John Wiley.
From the ‘C’ drop down menu, we have
opened one of the Elsevier Books titled
Comprehensive and Molecular
Phytopathology. This is one of several
thousand Elsevier Books titles accessible
from HINARI.
From the Table of Contents page, you
can view the various sections of the book.
For each section, there are Preview, PDF,
Related activities and Related reference
work articles options.
We have opened the Conclusion
PDF file of Comprehensive and
Molecular Phytopathology.
Return to Science Direct tab (title
page of book) and click on Browse.
As previously noted, we have used the ‘C’ drop
down menu to open an Elsevier Books titled
Comprehensive and Molecular Phytopathology.
To access a list of all the Elsevier Books, click on
the Science Direct Publications button. You will be
re-directed to ’A’ Publications page of Science
Direct.
Note also the search options for this portal.
Now opened is the display for the A page of
the Journal/Book title listing. You have the
options for an All or A-Z alphabetical links.
The green box indicates access.
Note also the various options to filter a search
by Subject, Favorites, Journals and/or Books.
Wiley Online Books
• 12000+ Online Books spanning the disciplines

Enzymology, Methods in Biochemical Analysis, etc.
• Topics include medicine, life sciences, psychology,
social and behavioral sciences, nursing/dentistry/

We have opened one of the Wiley
titles – Acute Medical Emergencies.
The access options are similar to
other e-books: a summary and PDF
of each chapter. The open lock
symbol notes access.
From the ‘Find books by title C’ drop down
menu, we have opened the John Wiley &
Sons publication titled Current Protocols:
Essential Laboratory Techniques, one of 16
Current Protocols titles available via HINARI.
For life sciences researchers, Current
Protocols feature overviews that examine
differing methodologies and enable the
researcher to identify the right protocol for
an experiment. All protocols are field tested
and scrutinized by Wiley’s editorial boards.
From the Current Protocols drop down
menu, we have clicked on the expanded
table of contents to the Unit level for Chapter
4 and Chapter 9.
For each Unit, you can link to an Abstract,
Full Article (HTML) or PDF version. Note
that there is a keyword Search option.
We have opened the HTML option for
Unit 9.1 Conventional Light Microscopy.
It is titled Parts of the Light Microscopy.
Note the Jump to… drop down menu
that enables you to access the other
sections of this Unit.
Finally, we have displayed the PDF
version of Unit 9.1 Note how it
displays in a similar fashion to a
book page. The links to the other
options are at the top of the page.
Via the ’A’ listing in the Find books by title A-Z drop
down menus, we have opened the American
Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry, 5th
edition (2008), one of 16 psychiatry related E-books
available from this publisher.
Note that the chapters also have the Download
PowerPoint Slideshow option. This format would be
useful for presentations and lectures.
We have displayed Chapter 3.The Role of Psychiatric
Measures in Assessment and Treatment.
Note that you can access the sections of this chapter
by clicking on the links in the left-column frame.
We have displayed the Clinical Decision Tree, Chapter 3.
Note the options to Email a link, Bookmark This and
either Print Section or Print Chapter. You also can save
the specific text as an html document.

Remember – to access the American Psychiatric
Publishing’s e-books, you must login to HINARI and
go to the specific letter of Book collection A-Z list.
Via the ’A’ listing in the Find books by title A-Z drop down
menus, we have accessed Applied Mycology, an E-book
published by CABI, a not-for profit science based
development and information organization.
This is one example from the 21 titles in the human health
and nutrition sub-set of CAB eBooks available via HINARI.
These titles include Home Parenteral Nutrition, Integrated
Food Safety and Public Health, and Parasitic Flatworms.
Note: the CAB publications are large PDF files that are
slow to download. You are able to download an individual
chapter which is a considerably faster option.
We have opened the initial page of Applied
Mycology. It is a PDF file that allows you
to print all or part of the material.
From the page with the link to Applied Mycology, we
have clicked on the listing for Human, Health, Food
& Nutrition. This page gives you a listing of the CAB
E-books in this broad subject category and links to
the full-text for those available to HINARI users.
Reminder – access the CAB E-books from the Find
journals by A-Z drop down menus.

We now view some Internet-based sources of E-books besides those
available from HINARI. Using the Internet Addresses (url) at the top of the
slides, you will have access to these free E-books.
The initial site is a gateway titled BookFinder, a source to over 1,200,000 ebooks. Access is by keyword and broad subject categories.
We have completed a search for infectious
diseases titles. For all the e-books, you
are able download a PDF version. Note
that these are very large files and will take
considerable time to download.
For the e-book Tropical Infectious
Diseases, the downloadable PDF
version is over 73 Megabytes.
For each keyword search, 100 books are
listed so precise searches are required.
We have completed a search for
myocardial infarction titles. The results
are a total of 10 while a cardiology search
results in the maximum 100 titles.
We have displayed the
Medicine category and the
various broad sub-topics.
We now view some Internet-based sources of E-books besides
those available from HINARI. Using the Internet Addresses
(url) at the top of the slides, you will have access to these free
E-books.
The initial site is a gateway titled FreeBooks4Doctors! that links
to 365 health–related E-Books. This site can be accessed from
the HINARI Other Free Collections drop down menu.
This slide lists the Infectious Diseases E-books
from the gateway.
You can access the titles by topic, impact factor,
stars (rating system), language and year. The
site notes which titles are PDF files.
To access the full-text books, you will be
redirected from the MedicalBooks4Doctors
gateway to the website of the specific resource.
We have opened two books from the Infectious Diseases
listing in FreeBooks4Doctors!. The first is the ABX Guide
from Johns Hopkins University (USA). This E-book is
organized as a website with numerous hypertext links
from the initial page. Users must register (free).
Note the url at the top of the slide.
The 2nd example from FreeBooks4Doctors is a
Centers from Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) E-book titled Epidemiology and
Prevention of Vaccine Preventable Diseases.
From the links in the table of contents, you could
open PDF files of specific chapters. This Ebooks replicates the format of a print book.
Note that the page does have links to related
resources from the CDC website.
Another useful gateway is the FreeBookCentre.Net
We have opened the Medical Books category. Note
that these links are organized by broad subject
category plus there is a keyword Search engine.
You can access this category from the drop down
menu using the simpler www.freebookcentre.net url.
Below the broad subject
categories is a list of
Recently Added e-books.
This slide contains a list of
infectious diseases Books that
are free on the Internet. Note
that the [Language] is listed.
Another excellent source of E-books
for health practitioners in low-income
countries is the Hesperian Health
Guides. From this page, there are the
following options to full-text books:
DOWNLOAD PDF or READ ONLINE.
When attempting to download a book,
this page will display. You can choose to
sign up for info on updated resources. If
you click No Thanks, the downloadable
version of the book will be displayed.
We have opened Where There is
No Doctor. You can view the
contents chapter by chapter.
As of June 2011, the National
Academies Press granted free access
to all its electronic books. Titles in the
Health and Medicine and Food &
Nutrition topics are relevant.
We have opened the Health
and Medicine topics page.
Note the specific SUBTOPICS
that should be of interest. Note
also the keyword search box.
From any individual title’s page,
you can click on DOWNLOAD
FREE PDF link and obtain the
full-text. You will need to
register but that is free.
Another good resource for E-books is the World
Health Organization’s Health topics A-Z list. By
clicking on one of the links to a specific topic, you
will be redirected to a page that includes WHO
publications in multiple formats including E-books.
Once again, this is accessible from the URL at the
top of the slide and you do not need to be logged
into HINARI to access these resources.
We have opened the Infectious Diseases
page from the WHO Health Topics subject
listing. Note that there are links to various
WHO documents including E-books under
the Publications sub-heading.
The NCBI Bookshelf contains access to over
700 e-books in life science and healthcare
including books, collections, databases,
documentations and reports . Note the lists
of New & Updated and Featured Titles. We
will open the Browse Titles option.
The NCBI Bookshelf can be searched by Types, Subjects and Publishers.
We have displayed the complete title alphabetical listing - with the Type of
material listed in the last column. You also can complete a keyword Search.
If you click on Book Types, you can access 110 ‘books’.
The last set of E-books is the MERCK
MANUALS Online Medical Library, the
electronic version of the print Merck Manuals.
Access (keyword search, a detailed index,
sections and symptoms) to all these
resources is from this index webpage.
We have accessed the Infections Diseases
section which contains a detailed directory
to information on this topic.
The Dengue page contains information on Symptoms,
Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of this disease.
This Online Medical Library functions as a website with
hypertext links. For the information on each specific topic,
you have the options to Print, Email or PDA download.
