Adam Teicher, KC Star: the Chiefs signed Alt for $9.6 million over four years. Rather than pay
him a signing bonus and an equal sum each season, the Chiefs gave Alt $1.5 million to sign and
will pay him a $1.6 million salary in 1994. His salary will escalate each year of the contract, to
$2.3 million in 1997. For salary-cap purposes, a signing bonus is prorated over the life of the
contract. So, Alt's contract counts almost $1.975 million (one-quarter of his signing bonus plus
his base salary) against the cap this season.

from a roster bonus due in 2006 of $3.5 million, and a roster bonus due in 2007 of $3 million…

AP: The Kansas City Chiefs got some backup protection for Joe Montana on Monday by signing
quarterback Steve Bono to a two-year deal reported to be worth $ 2.5 million.
Robert McG. Thomas Jr, NY Times: Bono's two-year deal with Kansas City, which allocates
$700,000 of the first year's $900,000 payment as a signing bonus with the other $200,000 as
base salary, suggesting a questionable circumvention of the salary cap rules.
Jason Whitlock, KC Star: I'm concerned about quarterback Steve Bono, the man Peterson gave a
three-year contract extension and a $1.5 million signing bonus over the summer…
Adam Teicher, KC Star: The Chiefs would save about $2 million in 1997 by dumping Bono's salary
if he is released or traded… But the remaining portion, believed to be about $1.5 million, of the
signing bonus the Chiefs gave to Bono when they restructured his contract last season, would
count against the salary cap in 1997.

$750,000 fully-guaranteed base salary in 2013. 3. $250,000 workout bonus in each year of the

base salary in 2011. His $1.8 million base salary in 2012 is guaranteed for injury only and he has
a $1.3 million roster bonus in 2012. It appears the Chiefs could get out of this after one year and
less than $6 million but I can't envision a scenario with that happening. In 2013, his base salary
is $3.8 million, in 2014 it's $3 million and in 2015 it's $4.1 million. He has $200,000 workout

John Clayton, ESPN: The deal is for $63 million, with $28 million guaranteed, according to a
source. He's going to make $40.5 million in the first three years of his contract.
Andrew Brandt, NFP: Cassel will make $28M in guaranteed salary and roster bonus, all earned in
the next two years. However, if he’s on the roster on the opening days of the 2011 league year,
there is a $7.5M guaranteed option bonus in the third year of the deal, 2011, bringing the
“functional guarantee” to $35.5M for the six-year, $63M contract. I use the word “functional
guarantee” because the $7.5M is not technically guaranteed, as Cassel has to be on the roster
after two years to earn the bonus. For practical purposes, the chance of the Chiefs releasing
Cassel after paying him $28M over the next two seasons is minimal at best.
Adam Teicher, Kansas City Star: Cassel, for instance, received a $10 million roster bonus last year
and is due a $250,000 workout bonus this year
Adam Schefter, ESPN: $250,000 [workout bonus in 2011 for 90% participation]

Adam Caplan, Scout.com: Charles, a speedy running back from the University of Texas, will
receive the following minimum base salaries: (08) $295,000 (09) $385,000 (10) $470,000 along
with a signing bonus of around $600,000.
Adam Schefter, ESPN: The Kansas City Chiefs have reached agreement with running back Jamaal
Charles on a five-year, $32.5 million deal that includes $13 million guaranteed
Mike Florio, PFT: Per a league source, the reported guarantee of $13 million is actually $8
million, in the form of a roster bonus paid upon (or not long after) execution of the deal.
There’s another $2 million in injury guarantees only.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: I've gotten a peek at Charles' brand new five-year
extension, which has an actual APY of $5.4 million: Charles received an $8 million roster bonus,
which is treated as a signing bonus and prorated over the next six years since the contract was
signed after the last pre-season game.
For 30% rule purposes, Charles has a $19.9475 million special teams LTBE incentive, which
Charles won't actually earn, but will be prorated along with the roster bonus ($27.9475M, or
$4.657M annually) over the next six seasons. If Charles does not earn the $19.9475 million
incentive, which he won't, he will earn base salaries of: 2011: $2.75M 2012: $3.25M ($2M
guaranteed for injury only) 2013: $1.75M 2014: $2.25M 2015: $4.75M
Charles has $4.5 million in base salary escalators between 2011-15, as well as $250,000 workout
bonuses in each year of the extension. Charles also has $1 million reporting bonuses in 2013-15,
and in 2014, has a $1 million NLTBE incentive tied to cumulative individual performance and the
presence of a Lombardi Trophy in Chiefs' headquarters.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: If Charles were to somehow earn that incentive, his base
salaries would decrease to $585k (2011), $701k (2012), $816,500 (2013), $932,000 (2014),and
$1.0475M (2015), which are 30% increases over his 2009 salary number. His $1m reporting
bonuses in 2013-15 also disappear if he earns that incentive. His P5 escalators are $600k (2011),
$800k (2012), $900k (2013), $1m (2014), and $1.2k (2015), but I'm not sure what triggers them.
Joel Corry, NFP: Charles '14 salary: $4.1M base salary, $2.95M 7/26 roster bonus GTD for skill &
injury, $1M reporting bonus & $250k workout bonus… '15 salary ($6.7M total): $4.45M base
salary, $1M roster bonus ($62.5k per game), $1M reporting bonus & $250k workout bonus… '16

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Flowers' five-year extension is worth $48.75 million in
"new" money, with $11 million fully guaranteed, another $11 million that is currently
guaranteed for injury only, and $1.25 million in escalators that can potentially increase the value
of the contract to $50 million. Flowers received a $10 million signing bonus and his $600,000
base salary in 2011 was increased to $1.025 million for the final 16 weeks of the regular season.
The prorated amounts (1/17th of his original rate plus 16/17ths of his adjusted rate) result in a
$1 million base salary, which is fully guaranteed. Next season, Flowers is due to earn a $5.75
million base salary, which is guaranteed for injury only. If Flowers is on the roster on the second
day of the 2012 waiver period, the full amount will become guaranteed for skill and cap. Flowers
is scheduled to make $7.35 million in base salary in 2013, $5.25 million of which is currently
guaranteed for injury only. That $5.25 million amount will become guaranteed for skill and cap if
Flowers is on the roster on the second day of the 2013 waiver period, bringing the guaranteed
amount to $22 million. Flowers' base salaries in the final three years of the deal are $5.25
million (2014), $6.25 million (2015) and $6.5 million (2016), with up to $1.25 million in base
salary escalator available for the 2016 season. There are also $2 million reporting bonuses in
each of the final three years of the deal, and Flowers is eligible to earn $250,000 workout
bonuses from 2012-16.
Brian McIntyre, Yahoo Sports: Flowers restructured his contract. Converted $4M of $7.35M base

Bob Sherwin, Seattle Times: Grbac, who signed a five-year $20.4 million contract with a $3.5
million signing bonus in March 1997, opened the season as the starter.
Adam Teicher, KC Star: many things can happen between now and next season, when Grbac's
base salary jumps from a manageable $500,000 to $3.8 million… Grbac's base salary climbs to
$4.8 million in 2000 and $5.8 million in 2001. He can void the final season of his contract.
AP: Having made little progress in talks to restructure the contract of quarterback Elvis Grbac,
who will carry a $16.9 million salary cap number under his current deal, the Kansas City Chiefs
reportedly are looking hard at trading for St. Louis Rams backup Trent Green… Grbac is
scheduled to receive a $10 million roster bonus on March 15.
Adam Teicher, KC Star: Schottenheimer said last week that Grbac, who will make $4.3 million in

Only $4 million of that contract is guaranteed. If he is still a member of the Chiefs in March, the
team will owe him a roster bonus of $8 million.
AP: Green, who was scheduled to receive an $8 million roster bonus Friday, will now have a
seven-year contract worth $50 million that includes a $9.5 million signing bonus and $11.25
million in total bonus money. Green, 32, had three seasons remaining on the former contract
and was due base salaries of $2 million (2003), $5 million (2004) and $6 million (2005).
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: [Green’s contract] called for him to make $24.1 million in the next three
seasons… Green had a 2007 base salary of $7.2 million… His contract in Kansas City was to have
paid him $7.7 million in 2008 and $9.2 million in 2009, but Green would not have been around

they signed him to a five-year, $23.25 million contract two years ago. In his first year, Holliday
dropped into coverage a lot in zone blitz situations, which didn't please a front office that
invested more than $4 million a year to bring him in. Last year, he didn't add much pass rush. By
releasing Holliday, the Chiefs saved a much needed $6.225 million in cap space.

contract with the Chiefs in March, a deal that included a guaranteed $ 350,000 signing bonus.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Priest Holmes, one of the best bang-for-the-back free agent additions in
NFL history, is quietly seeking an upgraded new contract. And who can blame the guy? He has
certainly outplayed the five-year, $8.45 million deal he signed as an unrestricted free agent in
2001. That deal included a signing bonus of $2 million. Put him on the market now and Holmes
might triple that amount. His current contract has three seasons remaining, with salaries of
$1.95 million (2003), $2.15 million (2004) and $2.35 million (2005). In addition, there are roster
bonuses of $250,000 this year, $300,000 for '04 and $350,000 in '05, along with annual workout
bonuses of $50,000.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Jackson signed a five-year contract that had a maximum
value of $57 million with $31 million guaranteed. From 2009-11, Jackson earned $18.225 million
of that contract between an option bonus and base salaries. A $7.05 million NLTBE incentive
was triggered in 2011 that has added $5.5 million to his $2.505 million base salary in 2012 -which now stands at $8.005 million -- and $11.5 million to his $3.22 million base salary in 2013,
which is now at $14.72 million. Jackson is now eligible for $250,000 workout bonuses the next
two off-seasons, as well.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Jackson's base salary this season has gone from $8.05
million to $4.25 million, with $4 million fully guaranteed (skill, injury, cap). Jackson's $250,000
workout bonus remains and he is eligible to earn a $500,000 playing-time incentive. In terms of
the salary cap, the 2014 season of Jackson's contract has been deleted, accelerating the $2.5
million in option bonus from that season onto this year's cap. Despite that, Jackson's cap
number has been reduced from $10.755 million to $9.5 million, a savings of $1.255 million for
the 2012 season. Jackson's 2013 base salary remains at $14.72 million, $3.22 million of which is
guaranteed for injury and cap.
Mike Garafolo, USA Today: Jackson's base salary went from $14.72 million to $4.2 million.
The upside for Jackson is his salary is guaranteed up to $4 million, an improvement from a
guarantee of $3.2 million. He also doubled his workout bonus from $250,000 to $500,000 and
has a $500,000 escalator if he plays more than 50% of the snaps. In all, he could earn $5.2
million this season.

Adam Caplan, FoxSports.com: The Kansas City Chiefs and starting ILB Derrick Johnson have
agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension worth just over $34 million with $15 million
guaranteed, FOXSports.com has learned. Johnson, who would have become an unrestricted
free-agent next year, was playing on a one-year restricted free-agent tender worth $2.475
million, which he signed in March.
Mike Florio, PFT: Johnson (as reported) receives $15 million in guaranteed money. We're told
that much of it comes from an increase in his 2010 base salary from $2.475 million to $19.475
million. Johnson won't get much of the difference because nine weeks of the regular season
have elapsed. He'll make $9.14 million over the balance of the year. He was due to make
$1.2375 million from Week 10 through Week 17. The base value of the deal includes $27.5
million in new money, with $18 million paid out over the first three years. With incentives
based on individual and team success (including playing time, Pro Bowls, and wins), Johnson is
eligible for annual incentives that can push the deal toward a maximum value of $34 million.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Johnson signed a seven-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, and the
contract voids to five years, and is worth $6.7 million over the shorter term… [he] received a
$3.31 million signing bonus and $452,000 base salary…
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: For the 2007 season, Johnson will earn the $12.5 million signing bonus, a
$750,000 base salary that is guaranteed, and a workout bonus of $50,000, for a total of $13.3
million. That base salary is a reduction from the $1.8 million Johnson was to have earned in base
salary in the final year of his original contract, which he signed as a first-round choice in the
2003 draft. The salary cap charge for the Chiefs in 2007 is a very palatable $3.356 million. Base
salaries for the extension portion of the contract are $2.5 million (2008), $4.55 million (2009), $5
million (2010), $5.3 million (2011), and $5.9 million (2012). Of those salaries, $2 million is
guaranteed in 2008, with $3.5 guaranteed in 2009 and $250,000 in 2010. There are prorated
roster bonuses of $1 million each in 2008-2012, payable at the rate of $62,500 per each game
that Johnson is on the active roster. There are also annual offseason workout bonuses of
$100,000 each for the 2008-2012 campaigns. And in 2010-2012, there are offseason bonuses of
$1 million each if Johnson is on the roster for the first day of the league year, typically defined as
March 1. While the salary cap charges are manageable for this season, they rise steadily after
that -- to $6.156 million (2008), $8.206 million (2009), $9.183 million (2010), $9.483 million
(2011), and $10.083 million (2012). Counting all six years, the contract totals $45.05 million. And
minus the $1.8 million that Johnson was to have earned under his original deal, the "new
money" is $43.25 million.

Adam Schefter, NFL.com: He signed the deal that included $8 million in guaranteed money. Law
received a $4 million signing bonus, $1 million in base salary for the 2006 season, and $3 million
worth of guarantees that are written into the years 2007 and 2008. Even if the Chiefs release
Law after this season, they still will owe him another $3 million in guarantees.
Mike Florio, PFT: Law got $4 million to sign, and will be paid a $1 million base salary in 2006. (As
a vested veteran, his base salary is fully guaranteed if he's on the Week One roster.) In 2007,
there's a $1 million option bonus due in March, a $3 million base salary, and a $1 million roster
bonus. This leaves a whopping $25 million over the last three years of the deal -- and it's highly
unlikely that Law will ever see that money.

Jason La Canfora, NFL.com: Former Oakland Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt has agreed to
terms on a three-year, $19.6 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, a league source said
Monday. The deal includes a $4 million signing bonus, according to the source.
John Clayton, ESPN: Routt will receive $6.5 million in guarantees and will make $11 million this
season as part of a three-year deal, a source said.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: the base value of Routt's contract is $18 million, with a
base salary escalator in the third year (2014) increasing the overall value of the contract. Here's
how the deal breaks down: Routt did not receive a signing bonus, but is due a $4 million roster
bonus and a $1.8 million base salary in 2012. $1 million of Routt's contract is fully guaranteed. A
$200,000 roster bonus increases his 2012 cap number to $6 million… In 2013, Routt has an
option bonus of $10, which is prorated over two seasons ($5 apiece in 2013-14), with a $4.3
million base salary and $200,000 workout bonus for a cap number of $4,500,005. Routt is
scheduled to earn $6,299,990 in base salary in 2014 along with a $1 million roster bonus and
$200,000 workout bonus for a cap number of $7,499,995.

AP: Chiefs signed Stanford quarterback Steve Stenstrom to a rich contract, and then released
him in the hope that no team would claim him because of salary cap restrictions. The Chiefs
hoped to re-sign Stenstrom later today to the practice squad for the full year.
Stenstrom signed a three-year contract for $2.15 million, far above the norm for a fourth-round
draft choice. He would make $627,397 in the first year, $691,982 in the second and $830,378 in

Adam Caplan, Scout.com: The Kansas City Chiefs have reached a three-year, $1.21 million deal
with seventh-round pick K Ryan Succop. According to a league source, the deal included a
signing bonus of $25,000.
Bill Williamson, ESPN: Succop, the final pick of the 2009 draft, signed a five-year extension worth
$14 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He received a $2 million signing bonus and $2
million in guaranteed salary for 2012. Schefter reports Succop can max it out at $14.675 million
if he is voted to the Pro Bowl and team makes playoffs every year.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: the base value of the five-year extension for Succop, the
last player chosen in the 2009 NFL Draft, is worth $13.75 million and included $4 million in
guaranteed money… Succop received a $2 million signing bonus, which is prorated ($400,000
per year) from 2011-15. Succop will earn $2 million in fully guaranteed base salary in 2012 and
has non-guaranteed base salaries of $1.95 million (2013), $1.95 million (2014), $2.75 million
(2015) and $2.9 million in 2016. From 2013-16, Succop has $50,000 workout bonuses and
unspecified base salary escalators that could increase the total value of the contract to $14.1
million.

Derrick Thomas
Adam Teicher, KC Star: The salary-cap implications of moving Thomas would be great. He has
five years remaining on what was originally a seven-year deal. Because his signing bonus was
$7.5 million, the Chiefs would lose more than $5 million against their 1999 cap by trading or
releasing him before June 1. If he is released after June 1, Thomas' cost to the Chiefs will be
$1.25 million, the pro-rated portion of his signing bonus… The Browns will have plenty of cash to
spend, so Thomas, who is due more than $2 million next season in salary and bonuses, wouldn't
be a huge burden.
