Spain, Cuba, Chile and South Africa. The focus of my work has been on increasing healthy habits and finding accessible and affordable ways to implement this.

Your Health

 Getting healthy is one of the hardest and most challenging tasks one can do in their lifetime. Its a constant and daily change to oneself and the environment they live in. (NY

Times July 10, 2011)

 However its not an impossible task for yourself, your family and your community.

Step 1 – Get A Physical

Know your numbers –

Do you what your Blood Pressure –BP?

Do you what your normal body temperature is?

How many milligrams of vitamins and medication

 help each other)?

What is your BMI Level ?

When was your last menstrual period-LMP?

What is your high-density cholesterol (HDL), lowdensity cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides (TG)?

when you are traveling aboard.

It is the winter season now please take your flu shots and for those in warm weather please make sure you take your allergy medication

Step 2 – Stay in Bed

 Sleeping 8 to 10 hours a day keeps the doctor away.

When your body slows down your heart rate decreases it helps your body recovery from all the flight it does during the day.

 Try not to fall a sleep with a TV, you think you are resting but your brain and eyes are working to make sense of TV series you are watching. Your auditory sense is heightened interrupting rest.

 Take the TV out of your bedroom, better sex and better training for your brain to learn how to relax and slow down

Step 3 - Get nuts

 Research suggests that people who eat nuts— walnuts, pecans, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, pine nuts and peanuts- two to four days or more per week have a lower incidence of heart disease than people who eat them less.

 Have nuts in your bag, car, and office. It a good way to lose weight as well and they go bad.

Step 4 – Say no to the Junk Food

 Many packaged snacks, crackers, bakery goods have the “bad” LDL according to recent research by Walter

Willett, M.D., at the Harvard School of Public Health.

 Read labels carefully: if a package claims “zero trans fat,” the amount per serving may be less than 0.5 g and could have been rounded down to zero.

 The only way to be sure you’re getting a product without trans fats is to avoid products that include

“hydrogenated oil”

Step 5 –Enjoy a little alcohol

 Scientific literature indicates that people who drink moderately are less likely to have heart disease.

 Alcohol appears to raise “good” HDL cholesterol.

Wine, in particular, “thins” the blood (making it less prone to clotting) and also contains antioxidants that prevent your arteries from taking up LDL cholesterol, a process that can lead to plaque buildup.

 Remember, one drink equals

12 ounces of beer,

5 ounces of wine

1.5 ounces of liquor

Step 6 – Be Beautiful

 The health benefits of Spas have been proven for centuries

 Spa therapy have proven to detoxify a person’s blood, improve blood circulation, immunities, or digestion, improve Mental Health and reduce stress

 Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel

Study (GSOEP), they find strong Spa therapy leads to a statistically significant reduction in both absenteeism and hospitalization

 Key thing to remember when going to Spa or pampering yourself is to focus and celebrate YOU!!!

Step 7 – Wash your Hands

Hand hygiene is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of infections

 Colds, Flu, and infectious diarrheas are all know to spread by hand to hand contact.

 Bar soaps can be pretty and smell nice, but they can also grow bacteria

 Hand sanitizers are not to be relied upon solely, after 5 uses you have to wash your hands with water or you may cause resistance build-up for some forms of bacteria and get sick

Step 8 – Check your Immunizations

 In adulthood you need to see your immunization status because Newer vaccines were not available when some adults were children

 Very important if you are foreign born, vaccines had different regulatory system (TB vaccine)

 A simple blood test can indicated which immunization you might need or need a booster shot

 If you are American born and have no idea where you immunization card is you can check your state immunization registry (CIR)

Step 9 – Drink H20

Helps to relieve headache and back pains due to dehydration.

You’ll look younger when your skin is properly hydrated.

Water helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturizes skin and increases skin elasticity.

Your brain is mostly made up of water, thus drinking water helps you think better, be more alert and more concentrated at work

Water helps fight against flu and other ailments like kidney stones and heart attacks! Water with lemon is used for ailments like respiratory disease, intestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis

Improves Sex: Your body feels very good because drinking water regulates your body temperature. That means you’ll feel more energetic during sex. Water also helps to fuel your muscle which is needed at times.

Step 10 – Become an Advocate

 Studies find a significant connection between volunteering and good health.

 Reports show that volunteers have greater longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates of depression and less incidence of heart disease.

 Doing something for others increases your

Self-Worth and sense of accomplishment

Connection with the Environment/Community

Energy

Mental Health (decreases rates of depression)

Self-Esteem

Getting your Community Healthy

 Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)

 The backbone of providing health to designated

Medically Underserved Area/Populations (MUA or

MUP).

 FQHCs provide their services to all persons regardless of ability to pay, and charge for services on a community board approved sliding-fee scale that is based on patients' family income and size

 Currently we service about 20 million individuals and we are total of 1124 health center

 2010 all health center total visits included 77 million health visits in the US

 1 out 16 individual in America get their health care at an FQHC

Getting your Community Healthy

 The Affordable Health Care Act

FQHC serviced as model of care that is possible in the US

We are charged to see an additional 20 million individuals who don’t have affordable and good quality access

 Therefore support your local FQHC (www.hrsa.gov)
