Algebra 2 ( * Indicates Honors) Teacher: Van Aelstyn CA Standard(s): Date: 2013.2.28 Subject/Course: Algebra 2 Grade: 10 7.0* Students add, subtract, multiply, divide, reduce, and evaluate rational expressions with monomial and polynomial denominators and simplify complicated rational expressions, including those with negative exponents in the denominator. Learning Objective (s): 7A - SWBAT simplify rational expressions using GCF, Diamond Method, and Special Case factoring. 7B - SWBAT multiply rational expressions using GCF, Diamond Method, and Special Case factoring. 7C – SWBAT divide rational expressions using GCF, Diamond Method, and Special Case factoring. Essential Question(s): How can we use our knowledge of fractions to work with rational expressions? Assessment: 3 Question Exit Slip Do Now: 9 Problems – 3 simplifying fractions, 3 multiplying fractions, 3 dividing fractions WHOLE GROUP Factoring Review + Use of the Factoring Flow Chart – 1 Example from each type of factoring plus how to identify them DIRECT INTRUCTION IdentiFactor – Studnets will need to identify the types of factoring used in, then factor and then simplify. Student mentors and myself will have to ok each student before moving on to the next step. COLLABORATIVE STATION Pass and Solve – Students will work in pairs, each receiving a different mix of multiplying and dividing rational expressions problems. The students will identify and factor each numerator and denominator for the problems on their sheet. Once they do they can pass the the paper to their partner who are then to execute the multiplication or division and the final simplification. COMPUTER ASSISTED STATION RevPrep – Simplifying and Multiplying Rational Expressions
