Course Description:

Welcome to Introduction to Public Speaking. This is a college level course offered through

Northwest Nazarene University. This course provides an opportunity for credit simultaneously at both NCHS and NNU. Students enrolled in the NCHS course may also pay NNU directly, which allows the student to receive an NNU transcript for 3 credit hours towards Introduction to Public

Speaking. Credits from NNU are readily accepted at most colleges and universities. Please check with the colleges of your choice concerning the acceptance of this transfer credit from NNU.

This course will focus on effective written and verbal communication. Students will gain confidence through preparation, speaking from outlines, manuscripts and developing both extemporaneous and impromptu speaking skills.

Course Objectives:

-Produce well-structured, grammatically sound writing in various modes of discourse.

-Communicate with clarity.

-Recognize standard usage in English grammar, word choice (diction), phraseology, and sentence structure for speech outlines.

-Identify various types of speeches

-Deliver effective public oral presentations using situationally appropriate verbal and nonverbal messages.

Expectations and Class Behavior:

-The rules and policies of NCHS apply in this class.

- No inappropriate language or content in speeches

- All students will be a supportive and encouraging audience member

- Dress appropriately during assigned speech days. No hats, shorts, or other sloppy attire.

- Show respect at all times towards the instructor and fellow classmates.

- All work is due on the assigned day. Late work will result in a 50% reduction and students will have one week to turn in the assignment.

- No cell phone, laptops, tablets, etc. unless approved by instructor.

Course Materials:

Binder for class work, notes, speech outlines, and assignments.

Notebook paper, pen, 3 x 5 note cards, materials for visual aids (provided by the student).

Cheating/Plagiarism:

In the event of cheating or plagiarism, the student will immediately fail the assignment.

Additional consequences will be decided by the administration.

Cheating includes:

● direct copying of assignments

● turning in any work that is not solely one’s own

Plagiarism includes:

● copying texts without citing the sources using someone else’s intellectual work without giving him/her credit

● papers purchased or downloaded from the Internet

● papers written or revised by another student, past or present

Unless specifically told otherwise, assume that all work must be completed individually. When permitted to work together, it is NOT acceptable to have word-for-word matching answers on separate assignments unless previously authorized by the teacher.

Semester 1 Quarter 1, September 2nd- October 30th

Week 1 September 2: Introduction to Public Speaking. Get to know you! (Short week)

Week 2 September 7: Introduction to Communication. What is communication? Cell phone activity, lecture from Alban textbook and Ch.1 of textbook.

Week 3 September 14: First article summary activity. Review: What is communication? Barriers and listening, fear of speaking. Ch. 1 continued- homework and reading. #1 Introductory

Speech using object 2-3 minutes .

Week 4 September 21: Quiz over introduction to communication (Ch. 1). More tips on overcoming speaking fear. YouTube video (Get talk Support) on “Fear of Public Speaking”

Lecture and exercise on overcoming fear of public speaking.

Week 5 September 28: Article summary. Preparing to speak. Introduction to oral readings and interpretation. Example. Deep breathing. Voice- Youtube example, TED. voice warm- up exercise, projection exercise. Posture TED, Gestures- enhancement or distraction. Language- reducing fillers.

Week 6 October 5: Article summary. #2 ORAL INTERPRETATION 3-4 minutes. A song, childrens book, short story. Deliver this using voice techniques, gestures, non verbals.

Week 7 October 12: Article summary. Show video on “Great Debaters” Self evaluations from on oral presentation private YouTube link(Short week, no school 15-16)

Week 8 October 20: Article summary. PPT on ch. 2 audience analysis. Activity and video on audience analysis. Homework questions on ch. 2

Week 9: October 26: Article summary. Quiz on audience analysis. How to effectively use visual aids. Alban.

Semester 1 Quarter 2 November 2nd-January 19th

Week 10 November 2: Article summary. ch. 3 ppt, reading and homework. Activity in finding your central idea. Ch. 9 ppt and class reading on informative speeches.

Week 11 November 9 Article summary. generating ideas/supporting. Further work on creating a speech. Ch. 4 and 7 ppt on Introduction/conclusion and outlining. How to write a quality speaking outline. Informative example. ( Conf. week ½ days )

Week 12 November 16 No article summary. #3 Informative speeches. Outline due on speech day.

Week 13 November 23 Article summary. Speech evaluation, self evaluation due. ( Thanksgiving break 26-27)

Week 14 November 30 Article Summary. Current Events/ Expressing your view. Choose a topic of interest. Seattle Times, CNN, or other reliable new source. Creating a PPT presentation talk.

Citing sources. Homework- bring in a handout on the topic you chose with a variety of sources. ch. 6

Week 15 December 7 #4 Current Events Speech 3-5 minutes. Research a topic in the news within the past 3 months. Investigate and analyze multiple sources. Give both sides of the issue and conclude with your opinion. Grading is based on your citing of sources and improved delivery techniques.

Week 16 December 14 Article summary. Homework- one page in MLA on the importance of researching current events and deciphering fact from fiction. ( Christmas Break December 21st-

January 3rd)

Week 17 January 4 Looking at various ways to deliver a speech worksheet. Ch. 8 reading and homework. Review informative speech and generating ideas.

Week 18 January 11 Final Speech for semester. #5 Informative speech Two 3-5 Minutes.

Week 19 January 18

No Final exam for speech. Review concepts covered thus far. ½ days 20-22

Semester 2 Quarter 3, January 18-March 24

Week 20 January 25 Article summary. Rhetorical devices worksheet and ppt. Activity on the power of words. Video illustration YouTube and TED. Rhetorical devices illustrated in

American Rhetoric website.

Week 21 February 1 Article summary. #6 Power of Words Speech 4-6 minutes. This speech is a personal story of a time when words either encouraged or had a negative impact on your life.

Week 22 February 8 Brainstorming, getting ideas. ch. 5 reading and homework. Video from

YouTube on Brainstorming principles. Activity on brainstorming and idea generating. Self evaluation due online. ( Mid Winter break 12-15).

Week 23 February 16 Impromptu speaking. Principles for impromptu speaking, rules, guidelines, and purposes. Video of impromptu. Practice session of Impromptu exercise.

Week 24 February 22 #7 Impromptu speaking 2-3 minutes. Each student will bring a set of impromptu questions to class and be prepared to ask these questions.

Week 25 February 29 Article summary. Speech critique. Homework- each student will be paired up with a group of 3-4 students to review a famous speech. This is a speech analysis. Review rhetorical devices for this assignment. Activity for entire class to critique a speech together.

Week 26 March 7 Article summary. Small group dynamics. Ch.11 reading and homework questions. Break into a groups and begin brainstorming a new product for a company. Small group activities during the week.

Week 27 March 14 Article summary. PPT on small groups. Review of an example of ad campaign. Video clip commercial activity.

Week 28 March 21 #8 Small Group Presentation 5 minutes. Your group will use modern technology to create an ad campaign and present this product/service to the class. You will be graded on organization of presentation, the flow, use of technology, and professionalism.

Semester 2 Quarter 4 March 28 - June 3

Week 29 March 28 Article summary. Interviewing activity. Creating a 1 minute elevator pitch why you are the person for the job.

Week 30 April 4 Introduction to Persuasion. Ch. 10 reading and homework. Ppt on persuasion.

Activity and worksheet over persuasion. ( Spring Break April 11-15)

Week 31 April 18 Article summary. Persuasion review. Examples of persuasion and types of persuasion. First manuscript is due for persuasion speech. Ppt on persuasion.

Week 32 April 25 Article summary. Persuasion quiz over techniques of persuasion from ch. 10.

Turn manuscript into outline. Outline due. Must show sources and cite sources.

Week 33 May 2 #9 Persuasion speech 5-7 minutes. You will research a topic particular topic that you feel strongly. You must cite at least 3 different sources that are academically accepted.

You Must CITE these sources in the outline you turn in and during the speech. An audience analysis will be mandatory regarding this topic and must be turned in with your outline on the day of your speech.

Week 34 May 9 Article summary. Self evaluations due. Introduction to debate. Example clips movie and video clips.

Week 35 May 16 No article summary. Preparation for a class debate.Worksheet on debate. PPT on debate. Students will be placed in groups of 3-4 per team. Each team will have a chance to

debate a topic selected by the instructor. If your team is not debating, then you are judging the debate between the other teams.

Week 36 May 23 Article summary. Finish class debate and review the process of debate. Results from the judges on which team won and why. Preparation for final speech.

Week 37 May 30 Final speech. #10 Elevator pitch, impromptu, or oral reading of your choice. 2 minute.

Week 38 June 6 No final exam.
