Professional Background:
Prof. Steven DeKrey is Senior Associate Dean, Director of Masters Programs and
Adjunct Professor of Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology (HKUST) School of Business and Management.
Prof. DeKrey has over 30 years experience in education and leadership
development. Beginning as a school psychologist, he worked for five years consulting
with parents, teachers and students in Iowa. His responsibilities included educational
diagnoses, educational programming and sport psychology.
Prof. DeKrey relocated to Chicago in 1982 after completing his Ph.D. degree at the
University of Iowa. He attended the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern
University for his MBA .Later he was named Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor
at Kellogginitiating the famous required applicant interview assessment. He was
Dean for Admissions when the school was ranked # 1 by Business Week in 1988.
Joining the College of Business at the University of Florida in 1989, Prof. DeKrey
spent 6 years Directing MBA programs and teaching strategy classes. At Florida he
initiated and developed two executive MBA programs including a Jacksonville
program sponsored by AT+T.

In February of 1996, Prof. DeKrey was named Associate Dean and Director of
Masters programs at the HKUST Business School. In 1998 the Kellogg/HKUST
EMBA program was launched with Prof. DeKrey as Founding Director. Widely
recognized for quality, the MBA programs at HKUST are rated highly by The Financial
Times with the EMBA program #1 in the world three times, and the full time MBA
ranked top 10 in the world for three years running. The HKUST Business School has
10 masters programs including a Global Finance partnership with NYU.
Outside Activities
Active in community organizations, Prof. DeKrey was the 2008 Chairman of the
American Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong, President of the Kellogg Alumni Club
of Hong Kong, President of the Kowloon Rotary Club, current member of Rotary Club
of Hong Kong and Vice Chair of the Americas Committee for the General Chamber of
Commerce. He is an activemember of Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honorary
Society and a Charter Advisory Board member for Junior Achievement, Hong Kong.
He is Annual Program Reviewer for the Society for Industrial and Organizational
Psychology and has reviewed 5 leadership books for Wiley, pre-publication. He
serves as Founding Co-Chair of the Kellogg Alumni Advisory Council, Asia.
Prof. DeKrey’s expertise includes leadership development and leader personality
assessment. A frequent speaker, teacher and writer on leadership topics across Asia
he co-edited a book entitled “Leadership experiences in Asia” with Kellogg Professor
David Messick in 2007. His second book, published in 2009, is called ‘Learning from
Leaders’. A third book “Leadership Development in Asia through Mentoring” is in
review. Executive education clients include AmCham Singapore, AmCham Vietnam,
AmCham HK, AmCham Shanghai, ExxonMobil, GMAC, MTRC, Gammon, PepsiCo,
Southern Fund China (南方基金管理有限公司) , UBS, Wal-Mart, Bank of China, Bank
of America Merrill Lynch.
Prof. DeKrey is often invited to sit on judging panels for awards selection. He is
certified to deliver Hogan Assessments and is a Leadership Architect certified by
Korn/Ferry. He was the Judge for Hewitt Best Employer Award in 2007 and Chief
Judge in 2009 and 2011. He served as a judge for the Wall Street Journal Asian
Innovations Award, on the Selection Panel for the Asian Women of Influence Awards
and Chairs the nomination committee for AmCham. His honor roll teaching includes
an MBA “Preparing to Lead Course” Shenzhen MBA “ResponsibleLeadership” course
and an EMBA course called ‘Learning from Leaders’. Recent speakers have included
Anson Chan, Paul Cheng, William Fung, John Wood, Jim Thompson, Umran Beba
Barry Posner, and Eva Cheng.
PERSONAL
Dr. DeKrey is married to Veronica Kwong DeKrey and has two daughters attending
universities in the US. His hobbies include biking, boating and he is a PADI certified
Master Scuba Diver
