• Geographers label the world in
many ways.
• Two of the main labels
geographers use are:
• More Developed Countries (MDCs)
• Less Developed Countries (LDCs)
How to Decide What Label?
• To help decide whether a country is more
developed or less developed, geographers
look at statistics to help them categorize
the world.
• There are 3 types of indicators (statistics)
geographers use:
• Economic indicators
• Health indicators
• Social indicators
Economic Indicators
• Today, we will begin discussing economic
indicators.
• We will look into what they are and how
geographers can use them to label the
world.
• The main economic indicators (statistics)
geographers consider are GDP & market
sectors.

Definitions
• GDP (gross domestic product) = the total
amount of money a country makes in a year
• Per Capita = per person
• Agriculture = creating raw materials (plants,
cotton, rubber, wood)
• Industry = processing the materials to make
goods (shirts, shoes, cars…)
• Services = selling and distribution of goods
(clothing stores, restaurants, hospitals)
