JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Clinical Specialist Department: Clinical Services Immediate Supervisor Title: Director of Nursing or Clinical Services Manager Job Supervisory Responsibilities: None General Summary: An exempt position responsible for educating clinical and administrative staff about variety of topics ranging from new drugs, techniques/protocols, health-related governmental regulations, and legal matters. This professional position is often held by an advanced practice nurse or specialty expert who serves as a consultant/resource for the medical practice to support quality care. Essential Job Responsibilities: 1. Serves as an educator, consultant, practitioner, and researcher to address a range of topics for clinicians and administrators. Provides expertise about clinical/health matters. 2. Participates in needs assessment, policy development, and program planning/implementation, providing leadership at senior level. Designs program guidelines, activities, and procedures to promote quality patient care. 3. Consults on complex patient medical issues relating to field of expertise and state-of-theart clinical care. 4. Collects, analyzes, interprets data and presents information in formats that clarify the significance of the data to a variety of audiences. Prepares and disseminates information to illustrate ethical, political, scientific, economic, and other factors impacting the medical practice. 5. Plans/implements training and provides technical assistance to health providers in clinic and in community. Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing (or other clinical specialty) and master’s degree in nursing, community health, or other clinical specialty. Experience: Extensive experience (5 to 10 years) in a relevant specialty clinical area, with at least 2 to 5 years in medical practice setting. Familiarity with state-of-the-art developments in medical field. 2. Knowledge of federal and state laws relating to nursing/clinical care, professional ethics related to the delivery of nursing/clinical care. 3. Knowledge of risk assessment, health status indicators, multicultural factors, and community health issues. Skills: 1. Skill in collaborating with colleagues, providers, and patients to assess health needs of specific populations, developing strategies and specific programs to address these issues, and making presentations. 2. Skill in diagnosing and treating complex clinical cases as consultant to other providers. 3. Skill in staying on top of trends in medical field serving as proficient role model. Abilities: 1. Ability to analyze complex data and draw conclusions needed to develop clinic policy and procedures. 2. Ability to communicate effectively with variety of internal and external groups. 3. Ability to facilitate discussion and build consensus. Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment, particularly computer hardware and software programs for research and analysis. Clinical equipment and supplies as needed when providing patient care. Work Environment: Primarily office setting with some activities in exam rooms. Some exposure to communicable diseases and conditions related to clinic setting. Mental/Physical Requirements: Nonintense physical activity. Mostly sedentary. Some standing for presentations.
