GateWay Community College Honors Program 2014/2015 Honors Program Application and Course Conversion Contract Packet Honors Program Eligibility Requirements In order to participate in the Honors Program students must be able to meet ALL eligibility requirements during the semester that they are going to participate in the program. The requirements are as follows: 1. Have a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA and be in good standing with the Maricopa County Community College District. 2. Have already completed 12 credits of 100 level or above coursework prior to the semester that they are planning on participating in the Honors Program or be admitted as a Presidents’ Scholar. 3. Be able to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or Eligible Non-Citizen status as listed on the GateWay HB 2008 form located on the back of this packet. 4. Complete 1 co-curricular activity each semester of participation. Honors Course Requirement Every eligible student who wishes to participate in the GateWay honors program must have at least one 3-credit, 100 level or above honors course in their schedule every semester. Students can meet this requirement either by taking a 3-credit honors course or by converting a 3-credit, 100 level or above course into an honors course. Semester Achievement Awards Honors students who successfully complete their Honors course and/or projects for the semester are eligible to receive Achievement awards. (Presidents’ Honors Scholars and Chancellor’s Scholars are not eligible for this award) Award amounts are based on successful completion of an Honors course as well as the total number of credits a student enrolls in during the semester. Students may receive only one award per semester regardless of the number of Honors courses they complete. Achievement Award Totals Credit Hours Award Amount 3-5 $0 6-8 $244 9-11 $325 12+ $500 Course Conversion Checklist (Please give a copy to your mentor) Double check with the Honors office to make sure that you are eligible to participate in the honors program. Choose any 3-credit, 100 level or above course to convert to an honors course. Meet with the instructor and inform them that you are interested in converting their class into an honors class. Ask them if they would be willing to mentor and sponsor your project for the semester. Instructors do have the right to refuse. Collaborate with the mentor to design an honors project. The project must meet all the limits and regulations (10 pages, 10 sources, 10 minute presentation) listed in the attached contract. The content of the project must be above and beyond any regular class content and assignment. You should also schedule the due date of your project and the date of your class presentation at this time. Submit the completed contract to the honors office (AF 106) by the second Friday in September during the fall semester or the second Friday in February for the spring semester. No late contracts will be accepted. Submit your project for grading to your instructor on or before the date that you agreed upon. The latest that projects are due is the week prior to the last official week of classes. The official due date for the project is the date that you and your mentor determine at the beginning of the semester. There will be no extensions given. Submit a copy of your project to the Honors office (AF 106) prior to the last week of classes. You will receive several e-mails throughout the semester with due date reminders. If the project is not a typical research paper, please include a 3-5 page written reflection with your project which includes an annotated bibliography of sources consulted that conforms to appropriate style guidelines (such as MLA, APA, etc.). Students receiving a “B” or better will receive an Honors Designation for that course on their transcript and a scholarship award commensurate with their program contract. Briefly describe how this project goes above and beyond the regular content (i.e. assignments and coursework) of the course that you are attempting to convert. Research Component: List the number and type of sources that you will use. (i.e. 3 academic journals, 2 textbooks, 5 articles) A minimum of 10 academic resources are required for research papers. Writing Component: Please state the length and documentation style (i.e. APA or MLA that you will use) A minimum of 10 pages not including cover page(s), bibliography, or works cited pages are required. Pages Format Oral Presentation Component: To whom will you present your findings, and what format will your presentation follow? (i.e. 10 minute PowerPoint presentation to my COM 100 class) Please describe as fully as possible. A minimum of 10 minutes are required for the oral presentation component. Grade Calculation: The MCCCD Honors Program encourages faculty mentors to make Honors Projects worth 10-20% of a student’s course grade. Please explain how the honors project grade will be calculated into the student’s grade for this course. (This must be assigned and designated by the faculty mentor) GateWay Community College Honors Project Processes & Requirements 1) Honors students and faculty mentors collaborate (it is not the mentor’s responsibility to come up with the project idea) to design a project that relates to the content of a course while exceeding its minimum requirements. All honors projects must include research, writing, and presentation of findings. Projects must represent students’ original work and ideas as defined in the Student Handbook. When applicable, projects involving human participants must comply with MCCCD IRB policies. Please visit www.maricopa.edu/irb for details. 2) Students must submit a completed project contract (with faculty signatures) to the honors office before the second Friday of September/February. 3) The GWCC Honors Committee review contracts and descriptions. Incomplete/unclear contracts will be returned with opportunities for revisions. Once approved, contracts remain on file with the honors program. Students and faculty mentors should retain copies of contracts. 4) On the Friday before the last week of the semester, honors students submit a copy of their completed project(s) to the honors office in AF 106. Projects must be accompanied by the following documents: bibliography of sources consulted (follow documentation guidelines appropriate to the field of study) (if your project is not a traditional research paper) written explanation of how your project was influenced by the research you conducted, and why it would be interesting to others in this field description of presentation component (length, format, and forum) 5) Before the last week of the semester, honors faculty mentors notify the Honors Coordinator or assistant of the student’s grade for the project and course.
