The Hanover High Band Boosters would like to thank all of our many volunteers and
sponsors for their assistance in helping to make today’s 9th Annual HHMI a success.
We also want to thank Amy Birdsong for her tireless commitment and devotion to our
band, our students, and our musical programs here at Hanover High School. Thank
you Mrs. Birdsong – you’re the best and we love you. A special thank you to Coach
Just, Director of Athletics and Student Activities at Hanover High, for the support and
cooperation he gave us while planning the 9th annual HHMI. Thank you to this year’s
HHMI 2013 Coordination Team who have spent many hours planning, leading, and
organizing this year’s event. Finally, special thanks to our Marching Hawks for their
energy and enthusiasm today. You are a pleasure to be around and your excitement is
contagious!
For those bands that are competing in this year’s HHMI, we wish you a warm and
friendly welcome to Hanover County. May your experiences today be successful and
memorable! Have a great day and a safe trip home. We hope to see all of you next
year.
Competition Etiquette
Please remain seated during a band performance.
Once the band enters the field, all movement in the stands
should stop.
Cell phone usage during a performance is discouraged.
Please show respect to the performing bands by either turning
off your cell phone or placing it on vibrate.

The Hanover Hawk Marching Invitational welcomes the
following highly qualified adjudicators to judge our
ninth annual competition:
Kyle A. Flohre (Visuals)
Mr. Flohre is currently the Director of Bands at Colonial Heights High School. He received his Bachelor of
Music from James Madison University and is currently pursuing his Master of Music Education at Virginia
Commonwealth University.
Under the direction of Mr. Flohre, the ensembles at Colonial Heights High School have consistently received
superior ratings at Marching and Concert Assessments. Colonial Heights High School is a fourteen time
“Virginia Honor Band,” with ten of those coming under Mr. Flohre’s tenure. The Colonial Heights Band
Program consists of the following ensembles: The Marching Colonials, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and
Percussion Ensemble. The program also supports a very successful winter guard. The Concept Winter Guard
has received numerous awards, in various classifications, while participating in the AIA circuit. In 2008, Mr.
Flohre was recognized by his peers and received the Colonial Heights High School “Teacher of the Year”
award.
Mr. Flohre’s professional affiliations include: NAfME, VMEA, VBODA, and Kappa Kappa Psi. He served
as the District III VBODA representative and was recently inducted into the Phi Beta Mu International
Bandmaster’s Fraternity. He is also an instructor at JMU Summer Band Camps, and plays clarinet in the
Commonwealth Winds. Mr. Flohre and his wife Jennifer recently expanded their family with the birth of
their first child – Emma.
Boyce “Barry” Flowe (Drum Major)
Mr. Flowe is in his second year as the Performing Arts Lead Teacher Specialist for Hanover County Public
Schools. Before assuming this role, he served for nine years as the director of bands at Oak Knoll Middle
School in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Prior to Oak Knoll, he spent eleven years as the director of bands at
Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia. In both venues, the bands continually received Superior
ratings at State Festivals and his program at Patrick Henry was recognized as a Virginia Honor Band under
his leadership.
A sought-after guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator, Mr. Flowe is also in his eleventh year as the director
of the Pep Band at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Mr. Flowe coordinated the Kings
Dominion Band and Orchestra Festival from 1993-2012.
Mr. Flowe obtained a Bachelors degree in music from Old Dominion University and a Masters degree in
Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia,
Virginia Music Educators Association and Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association. Mr. Flowe
lives in Henrico County with his wife Nancy and their two children.
Allen Hall (General Effect)
Mr. Hall is a music educator at Glen Allen High School, a position he has held since 2010. He teaches band
and orchestra at Glen Allen and serves as department chair for Fine Arts. He also sponsors Glen Allen’s
Bocce Team and has coached them to two undefeated seasons.
Allen has taught in Henrico County for twenty-five years and in 2009 was selected Henrico’s Music Educator
of the Year, an honor bestowed upon him by his peers. He is also a member of Phi Beta Mu, the honorary
band fraternity. He also serves as President of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association.
Allen is an active clinician, adjudicator, and performing musician across Virginia and resides in the suburbs of
Montpelier with his wife, Merry Beth, and two dogs of questionable origin.
Merry Beth Hall (Auxiliary)
Ms. Hall is a colorguard choreographer and instructor from Hanover County, Virginia. She currently works
with Glen Allen High School, Prince George High School, and Hanover High School. Past experience
includes several other groups in the Richmond metropolitan area. Ms. Hall holds a Bachelor of Music
Education degree from James Madison University and Master of Public Administration degree from Virginia
Commonwealth University. She is co-principal horn with the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra and is a
member of the Beltway Brass Quintet in Washington, DC. Her full-time work is in the field of curriculum
development for career and technical education.
Richard Huggins (General Effect)
Mr. Huggins is the band director at Oak Knoll Middle School and is the drill writer for the Hanover High
School Marching Band. Originally from Roanoke, he graduated from James Madison University in 1989. Mr.
Huggins first taught elementary bands in Fairfax County and then accepted a teaching position in Washington
County, Virginia at E. B. Stanley and Glade Spring Middle Schools. For four years, Mr. Huggins directed the
Patrick Henry High School (Glade Spring) Band. He then moved to Salem Church Middle School in
Chesterfield County, where he taught for fifteen years. Mr. Huggins has marched with and served as an
instructor for the Guardsmen Drum and Bugle Corps from Schaumburg, Illinois. He is an active adjudicator,
clinician, and drill writer. His professional affiliations include VMEA, VBODA, MENC, and Phi Mu Alpha
Sinfonia. Mr. Huggins and his wife, Patti, live in Midlothian with their two children, Laura and Daniel.
Clyde Hughes (Music)
In May, 2009, Mr. Hughes completed seven years as Professor of Brass Studies (Music Education) and
Conductor of the Capital Symphonic Band at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. He is also Director of
Bands Emeritus of Hermitage High School, Henrico County, VA, retiring in June 2002 where for 30 years his
bands consistently received superior performance ratings in wind ensemble, concert band, jazz ensemble,
field show and parade events, his bands having also received state, national, and international recognition.
Mr. Hughes is a graduate of Hermitage HS, The University of Richmond (B.A. Music Education), and
George Mason University (M.A. Music) (Conducting). He serves annually as a member of the adjudication
staffs for the North American Music Festivals and Festivals of Music in the Parks, headquartered in Carlisle,
PA, and Douglassville, PA, respectfully, as well as the Kings Dominion Band Orchestra/Jazz Festivals. He is
a member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), Virginia Music Educators Association
(VMEA), Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA), National Band Association (NBA),
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and an elected member to Phi Beta Mu International Band Masters Fraternity for
which he serves as President of the Virginia state chapter, Alpha Chi. He is an elected member of the Festival
of States Band Directors Hall of Fame in St. Petersburg, Florida, and member of the VBODA Band
Directors Honor Roll. Upon his retirement from Hermitage HS, Mr. Hughes was presented with Joint
House Resolution No. 288 by the Virginia General Assembly at the State Capitol, Richmond, Virginia in
recognition of his contributions to music education in the youth of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The
Henrico County, VA, Board of Supervisors also presented as resolution in recognition of his 30 years of
service to the Hermitage HS community and music education. The Tri-M Honors Society at Hermitage HS is
named in Mr. Hughes honor as well as the Director’s Award and Grand Champion trophy awarded annually
at the Hermitage Classic Marching Band Festival.
George F. Sadler (Visuals)
Mr. Sadler was an instrumental music director and administrator in the Hanover County Public School system
for thirty-two years. He is a graduate of John Randolph Tucker High School in Henrico County and received
his B.S. in Music Education from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia. In 2003, he received a Master
of Education Degree from the University of Virginia with an emphasis in School Administration and
Supervision.
Mr. Sadler’s career as a band director spanned three decades and has been highlighted by several Virginia
State Honor Band awards. While at Atlee High School, his band was awarded a special citation from the
Virginia General Assembly for outstanding contributions to the State of Virginia. Mr. Sadler’s bands have
performed in major bowl game appearances, the Orange Bowl Festival Parade and in festivals throughout the
east coast. He also serves as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the state. Mr. Sadler’s professional
affiliations have included membership in the Music Educators’ National Conference, Virginia Association of
Secondary School Principals, and Phi Beta Mu. In 2012, Mr. Sadler retired from his position as Principal of
Hanover High School in Hanover County, Virginia.
Earl E. Shaffer, Jr. (Music)
Mr. Shaffer is in his 34th year as a teacher of public school music. An Arlington, Virginia native, he graduated
from Yorktown High School in 1975, attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and graduated from James
Madison University in 1980 with a Bachelors of Music in Education degree. He was the director of the
Covington (Va.) High School Band for nine years prior to moving to Chesterfield County in August 1989
where he began a seventeen-year tenure as the director of bands at Lloyd C. Bird High School. He was
appointed to open the new Cosby High School in August 2006.
In 2013, Mr. Shaffer’s band have currently earned SUPERIOR ratings at the past 24 consecutive VBODA
concert festivals, one of the longest streaks of its kind amongst current and retired directors in the
Commonwealth. Mr. Shaffer’s bands have also earned Commonwealth of Virginia Honor Band titles for
fifteen years, making him the 12th director in the history of the VBODA to have his bands earn this number
of titles.
Mr. Shaffer is an active adjudicator for band festivals in the mid-Atlantic region and is a sought-after guest
conductor and clinician of bands.
Away from teaching, Mr. Shaffer is an avid N-Scale and O-Gauge model railroad operator and collector, a
longtime “World’s Greatest Hobby Ambassador” (WGH) which is a national organization designed to
promote model railroading, a pilot of radio controlled aircraft, a Washington Redskins and a Washington
Nationals fan, is a clarinetist who has recorded with the nationally known Keystone Wind Ensemble of
Indiana, Pennsylvania and who currently performs with the Commonwealth Winds of Richmond Virginia,
and plays softball for the “Ambassadors” in the Chesterfield County “50 and over” league. He and his wife
Ellen live in Chesterfield and have 3 grown children.
Daniel Valadie (Percussion)
Mr. Valadie graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from James Madison University and a
Masters in Music from George Mason University. He has directed bands in Montgomery County, Virginia
and Lynchburg, VA.
Daniel has taught and composed/arranged music for a number of indoor and outdoor Percussion Ensembles
throughout Maryland, New York, and Virginia and was an arranger/instructor for the James Madison
Marching Royal Dukes, Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Currently, Daniel is a percussionist in the United States Air Force Band, Washington D.C., and is the
percussion judging coordinator for the Atlantic Indoor Association.
