1.06 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Joint cover system shall include cast-in-place anchorage and shall consist of elastomeric pads and
a metal center plate which spans the joint.
B. Joint covers shall permit unrestrained movement of the joint without disengagement of
the cover. Joint covers must conform to the requirements of ASTM E1399.
1. Specify x-axis joint movement. (Joint expansion and contraction; Specify for each building
level: floor)
2. Specify y-axis joint movement. (Joint shear movement; Specify for each building level:
floor)
3. Specify z-axis joint movement. (vertical shear movement; Specify for each building level:
floor)
C.
Allowable load on floor joint cover plate shall be
psf uniform load and
concentrated load (uniform load: 50, 100, 200) (concentrated load: 300 Pounds, 2,000 pounds)
D.
Fire rated joint cover systems shall have been tested by and shall be listed with an
independent, nationally recognized testing and listing entity. Fire resistant joint covers shall be
rated for [1 hour] [2 hours] [3 hours] [4 hours] [not less than the fire rating of the adjacent
construction]
2.02 MATERIALS
A. [Expansion] [Seismic] joint cover systems shall be Balco, Inc. [HPG] Series
1. Steel: shall be ASTM A36, Hot Rolled Carbon Steel, Hot-Dipped Galvanized
2. Stainless Steel: ASTM A666, alloy 304
3. Neoprene pad: shall be 3/8” thick, fiber reinforced, UV resistant, 2 ply belt pad
4. EMT: ANSI, C80.3 Electrical Metallic Tubing, conduit, steel, galvanized
5. Nosing: shall be ASTM D4020 UHMW Polyethylene
6. 5. Adhesive: Epoxy gel adhesive, high modulus, two component, meeting ASTM C881
requirements
7. Water Barrier: Flexible EPDM, Class I, ASTM D4637, 45 mils thick (minimum) sheet
8. Fire Barrier: choose the appropriate fire barrier(s) from the list below
Metaflex Classic tested in accordance with ASTM E119/ASTM E814, *
Metaflex 2000 tested in accordance with ASTM E1966 and/or UL 2079, *
Metaflex 5000, MetaMat tested in accordance with UL 2079 and/or ASTM E1966, *
Metaflex 5000 MetaBlock tested in accordance with UL 2079 and/or ASTM E1966, *
*including hose stream test, where applicable, at the full rated period
9. Fasteners, accessories, sealant and other materials required for complete installation in
accordance with the manufacturer’s written installation instructions.
