Attendance in all sessions for the full 2 hours 50 minutes of each period is required. 2 points are deducted for every 10 minutes late or absence from the lab without permission from lab instructor. Item Points Labs 600 Presentations 200 Lab Exams 300 Class Participation/attendance 100 Total 1200 93-100% A , 90-93% A- , 87-90% B+ , 83-87% B , 80-83% B- , 77-80% C+ 73-77% C , 70-73% C- , 67-70% D+ , 63-67% D , 0-63% F Lab rules - Your major objective should be to have a safe learning experience. Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the lab when experiments are being conducted. An individual who violates this rule will not be permitted in the lab. - Read the posted Safety Regulations and abide by them. If you have a question about safety that is not answered by these safety regulations, please refer to the CRC Handbook of Laboratory Safety, available in the lab. - Appropriate dress is required for safety reasons. Wear shoes that cover the feet. Long pants are required. No sleeveless shirts or tank tops. Do not wear a hat. Do not wear long, flowing clothes (that includes a tie). Long, loose hair must be restrained. When required, wear a face shield. When required, wear gloves appropriate for the task at hand. - You must sign in at the beginning of each lab. For every ten minutes late, two points will be deducted from your class participation/attendance score. You must be in the lab for the entire lab period. If you are going to be absent from an entire lab or a portion of a lab and you have a valid excuse, you must inform both your lab partners and your instructor. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a grade of zero for the lab that you miss. - Every group must have a lab notebook (with duplicate numbered pages). The instructor will sign your notebook once or more in each lab period. During each lab make notes of everything you are doing and every measurement you have made. A copy of your lab notes will be attached to the lab report; therefore, make sure that they are legible and understandable. Recommendation for laboratory notebook uses are: (1) Write in ink. (2) Record all observations directly into the notebook. (3) Do not erase. If necessary line out with one line. (4) At the top of each page put date, experiment name and any other useful data. (5) When you finish a page, sign your name and the date at the end of your data. (6) Lab group members take turns recording information in the lab notebook. (7) Never write on a page after you have signed it. Pre-Lab Preparation: You must come to the lab prepared to work effectively, safely, and efficiently. Familiarize yourself with the theory and equipment necessary. Read appropriate sections of the lab manual and the references. At the beginning of a new lab, each group must prepare a schematic drawing of the experimental apparatus and a data table with proper units. The data table is to be written in your laboratory notebook before the start of the laboratory period. The drawing and the data table must be presented to the laboratory instructor prior to performing any experimental work. A group who violates this rule will have points deducted from their grade. Laboratory Reports: Students will submit group laboratory reports. Each group member is responsible for the entire written report. Inclusion of work from other, non-referenced sources will result in an "F" grade. Reports must be written according to the format described in the Laboratory Manual. All reports must be double-spaced, typed. A sample of the title page is given. Laboratory reports are due one week after the scheduled completion of experimental work, at the beginning of the laboratory period. Late reports will be penalized 20% per day. A report that is ten minutes late will be counted as a day late. Reports will be graded both on technical content and on the presentation of that content.
