With the ease of cutting and pasting at your fingertips, there are many questions about the acceptability of using information gathered in online research for projects and papers in school. This activity is designed to build your background knowledge on the topic of plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism using APA. Directions: Task I -(1) On your own, free write on the following terms. Tell me EVERYTHING you know or think you know without being redundant. Use pencil. Write small, but not too small I can’t read your responses. You may use additional paper. (2) While viewing PPPs and tutorials, edit/revise your responses accordingly. (3) After viewing the presentations, partner up and share responses. Task II-(4) With a partner, generate additional questions you may have on APA. Together, (5) engage in additional research, and continue to edit/revise until you are happy with your answers. Task III- (6) Independently, practice paraphrasing, summarizing, and extracting direct quotes using APA. Show the teacher when you are done. Task IV- (7) Independently or with a partner, create a “Cheat Sheet” on APA and how to create in-text citations and a formal reference. Task I 1. What is plagiarism? What is a copyright, its purpose, and copyright infringement? What are consequences of copyright infringement? 9. How is a paper formatted when using APA? Think in terms of the following: “What are the parts of an APA paper, and what do they entail?” “What margins, font, and spacing should be used in APA?” Task II - What additional questions do you have? Write them out and find the answers. Task III - Time to Practice Directions: Choose a non-fiction book. Identify a passage, and using the same passage do the following: 1. Summarize passage using proper APA format 2. Paraphrase passage using APA 3. Extract a direct quote using APA 4.
