Topic: How to avoid plagiarism using APA
Is someone stealing your work? Are you stealing theirs? With the ease of cutting and pasting at your
fingertips, there are many questions about the acceptability of using information gathered in online
research for projects and papers in school. This activity is designed to build your background knowledge
on the topic of plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism using APA.
Directions: Task I -(1) On your own, free write on the following terms. Tell me EVERYTHING you know
or think you know without being redundant. Use pencil. Write small, but not too small I can’t read your
responses. You may use additional paper. (2) While viewing PPPs and tutorials, edit/revise your
responses accordingly. (3) After viewing the presentations, partner up and share responses. Task II-(4)
With a partner, generate additional questions you may have on APA. Together, (5) engage in additional
research, and continue to edit/revise until you are happy with your answers. Task III- (6) Independently,
practice paraphrasing, summarizing, and extracting direct quotes using APA. Show the teacher when
you are done. Task IV- (7) Independently or with a partner, create a “Cheat Sheet” on APA and how to
create in-text citations and a formal reference.

2. What ways can plagiarism be avoided?
3. What are examples of intentional and unintentional acts of plagiarism?
4. When should you cite a source?

your research. On a separate piece of paper or in the space below create in-text citations and formal
references for the following sources: book, webpage, online newspaper, magazine (print), online
video… you may add anything else you feel will help you.
You may use the Citation Machine to create in-text citations and formal references for any print or
