Sunrises and Sunsets Holley Kelley, M.S., C.P.G., FT Biographical Perspective and the Sunrise Story Schooling & Skills: Holley Kelley, M.S., C.P.G., FT has a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, a minor in psychology and a Master’s degree in Applied Gerontology. She is also a Credentialed Professional Gerontologist awarded through the National Association of Professional Gerontologists, a Fellow in Thanatology: Death, Dying and Bereavement, is a member of the Southern Gerontological Society and the Association for Death Education and Counseling. Holley acquired her higher education from Brenau University. She is an entrepreneur, practices as a gerontologist, is a writer, speaker and author. The Beginning… Holley has always been writing. In her younger years, her writing began with poetry, songs and short stories. In her youth, she performed many of her songs with local bands and she often sang at local events. At the age of 12, she received an offer from a recording studio to purchase one of her country songs, titled, Plenty Happy. An offer she declined—preferring to sing them herself—but she continued to sing and write, and that experience substantiated that she not only enjoyed writing, but perhaps also demonstrated a natural aptitude for it. Page In Holley’s early years at Brenau University, she wrote an advice column for the college newsletter. She continued on to have short stories published and worked at the college radio station. She also worked at a local station beginning as an intern and later was offered a paid position as afternoon news anchor, where she wrote and delivered live, afternoon news broadcasts, some of which were major, national news events. She graduated Brenau University with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Journalism and a Minor in Psychology. Following graduation, she continued pursuits in the field of journalism and broadcast news and worked as a writer, news anchor and reporter. 5 Early College Life… Post-Graduation… In addition to her writing, Holley maintained a persistent interest in end-of-life issues and aging. She recognized early on an instinctive ability to comfortably relate to elders. Around the age of 21, she was asked to write and officiate a custom funeral service. She accepted, and it was that event that led her towards new career pursuits. She was soon offered a management position in the health care field. Her passions towards writing personal eulogies could not be quelled, so she began a business offering this service in addition to her full-time career. She eventually left the health care industry to open her own senior-focused insurance firm, dedicated to consulting older Americans regarding insurance products specifically targeted for them. Current Career Panorama & Studies… A relocation to north Alabama led to a new geographic landscape and Holley decided to fulfill a longing and aspiration to obtain her Master’s degree in Gerontology. Holley returned to Brenau University to concentrate on these studies under the talented leadership of Dr. Bonnie J. Kin, Director of M.S. Applied Gerontology. It was at Brenau, that the concept of Sunrises and Sunsets was originally conceived and born. The final requirement of her Master’s gerontology studies required a capstone project. Holley decided this project must involve subjects and skillsets that would keep her interested and invested. Her studies in gerontology enthused a greater fascination towards death-related matters than ever before. In addition, a new area of fascination had been stirred—advance care planning. Holley decided that for her capstone she would focus on these two areas of significant interest and intrigue. She also knew that she would utilize her life-long ability of writing to execute the project. The concept and creation of Sunrises and Sunsets began to take form and in ten weeks and 300 pages later, Holley turned in her capstone project to Dr. Bonnie J. Kin, titled, Sunrises and Sunsets; A life-long planning guide for life’s inevitable fate. However, what Holley thought was a rewarding end to a wonderful academic journey was actually the beginning of something she could have never imagined. Page Upon receipt of Holley’s book, Dr. Kin emailed Holley and among other accolades, told her if she ever did anything in her life, she “MUST, MUST, MUST publish it.” While Holley was flattered, thrilled and grateful for Dr. Kin’s praise, she was fairly certain the book was destined to collect dust and serve as another memorabilia of Dr. Kin’s exhibition of archived student projects. 6 Missing the Memo… Several weeks later, Holley received a phone call from a writer for Brenau University, who shared that she was calling to do a story on Sunrises and Sunsets. Alison Reeger-Cook introduced herself, and said that her supervisor, the Director of Communications and Publications, David Morrison, asked her to write a review and story on the book. He had heard about the book from Dr. Kin. Sunrises and Sunsets was now doing a campus tour! During the interview, Holley answered Alison’s questions—including what was later regarded as one of the most defining and impressionable questions posed about Holley and the book, “What exactly was it that you wanted to do with death?” To which she responded, “I guess I wanted to wrangle it, I suppose I wanted to be a death wrangler, of sorts…” And as history would have it, the first story ever printed was titled, “Death Wrangler”—a cognomen that stuck. Holley was extremely surprised at the unusual series of events and interest in her project, as well as highly complimented for the work she had done. Yet she still believed the book was destined to remain sedentary. She had given consideration to exploring publishing venues, but it seemed a daunting task and she was pleasantly content with her other interests. The Exactitude of Destiny… About a month later, Holley received a letter from a stranger at the time, Dr. Andrea Birch. This heartfelt letter stated that she had read “every page of the book” and how meaningful she found it to be. She shared that she had recently lost her father, and how much he would have enjoyed the book. She stated if he were still alive, how she would be sharing the book with him. Holley was indubitably realizing that she had turned this book into only one person, and yet this book had reached so many people all on its own! This galvanizing and honest letter was absolute proof to her that the book was not meant to remain dormant, and she was not meant to remain inactive regarding the potential of what she had created. She knew in that moment what she must do. It was as if all the stars and the planets had aligned ever-so-flawlessly in that moment to show her the path she must follow. The rest is history. Page 7 Holley graduated Suma Cum Laude with a Master of Science Degree in Applied Gerontology. She was also awarded a Fellow in Thanatology: Death, Dying and Bereavement designation. She was also nominated as Who’s Who Among American College Students and she found a wonderful publisher, Robert D. Reed Publishers, in her first round of proposal submissions. Holley will tell you that this book was never about her, “Sunrises and Sunsets was going to happen, one way or another! Sunrises and Sunsets had a will, fate and destiny all of its own!” She says. “And IT wasn’t going to stop until I received that memo!” Today… In addition to her ongoing writing endeavors, Holley hosts the wonderful Sunrises and Sunsets workshops, guiding people through her book. She is the creator of “The Twelve Steps for Conscious and Creative Comprehensive Advance Care Planning.” Holley is the founder of the Latter-Life Planning Institute, (LLPI) The Ultimate Guidance for Life’s Inevitable Destiny, which offers products and services that enrich and inspire distinctive aging and living, while strategically help thoughtfully prepare for life’s ultimate journey. As part of LLPI, She writes and officiates custom funeral services through her company, Tributations.
