tenure-track appointment.
The Entomology and Nematology Department has a research, teaching and outreach mission to develop and
disseminate comprehensive basic and applied knowledge regarding the interactions among plants, pathogens
and their environment.
Responsibilities: This is an academic year (9-month) tenure track position that includes the expectation that the
successful candidate will develop innovative teaching and research programs, and participate in outreach efforts
that contribute to the mission and goals of the University. Research should address fundamental and/or applied
aspects of chemical ecology relevant to arthropods or nematodes. Research should be mechanistic in outlook
and may benefit from collaborative efforts that draw on expertise in genomics, bioinformatics, biochemistry,
population ecology, population genetics and/or epidemiology. Depending on the candidate’s expertise and
interests, investigations could range from the molecular and cellular to population and community levels. We
seek an individual with interests in chemical ecology who can exploit opportunities to collaborate with existing
research programs in ecology, biochemistry, molecular biology or natural products chemistry in the Department
of Entomology and Nematology and on the UC Davis campus in general. Research experience should document
expertise in the application of modern experimental and computational methodologies to the advancement of
basic biology, and the capacity to develop information germane to the management of pests affecting agriculture
and/or native plant communities. Teaching is assigned by the department chair and will be in the area of
expertise of the successful candidate, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and will include
participation in the department’s existing curriculum. Supervision of graduate students, student advising,
curricular development, and participation in University service and outreach programs are expected. The
appointee is expected to develop a strong extramurally funded research program.
Qualifications: The applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in entomology and nematology, microbiology, natural
products chemistry or other closely related biological or chemical field. A strong commitment to teaching at the
undergraduate and graduate levels is expected.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
Appointment Date: Applications will be reviewed with the expectation that the appointee will be available for
service on or about July 1, 2014.
Applications: Applications should be submitted on-line at http://recruit.ucdavis.edu, and inquiries should be
directed to Dr. Richard Karban, Search Committee Chair, Department of Entomology and Nematology,
University of California, One Shields Ave, Davis, CA 95616, voice 530 752 2800 and email
rkarban@ucdavis.edu.
Applicants should submit: curriculum vitae including publication list; statement of research and a separate
statement describing teaching interests and background; and names, addresses including e-mail, and telephone
numbers of at least four references. The position will remain open until filled. To ensure consideration,
applications should be received by December 15, 2013. The University of California, Davis is an affirmative
