Expository Paper – Body Paragraph
Watch the following video on writing tips, pay
attention for helpful hints you can use when you
write your first body paragraph.
Topic sentence
 Every paragraph should include a topic sentence that
identifies the main idea of the paragraph.
 A topic sentence also states the point the writer wishes to
make about that subject.
 Generally the very first sentence in a paragraph.
 A paragraph’s topic sentence must be general enough to
express the paragraph’s overall subject. But it should be
specific enough that the reader can understand the
paragraph’s main subject and point.
When creating a paragraph
 Think about the topic you want to discuss
 Then think about what you want to say about the topic,
this is called the controlling idea, or supporting details
What comes after?
 The supporting details in the paragraph (the sentences
other than the topic sentence) will develop or explain the
topic sentence. Read all the supporting details in the
paragraph and think about the ideas they discuss.
 Supporting details must use textual evidence to prove the
overall claim.
How is textual evidence used?
 There are three main ways to use evidence or examples
from a text to illustrate your own points in an essay. They
are:
– Making a reference to the author or the text
– Paraphrasing/summarizing the author by telling about the ideas or
story in your own words
– Directly quoting from the text
