We are so proud of all our students and anxious to hear their stories. They represented Inspire and Chico with dignity and integrity. They were thoughtful, asked challenging questions, participated in discussions and showed great respect for the people who experienced the Civil Rights movement and shared their stories and perspective. Debbie Travers and Marysol de la Torre sent a report midway through the trip that will provide you a deeper look. I quote: Hi Inspire! We're on day five of our Sojourn and the kids are all fine. The pace of this journey has been breakneck with highlights including meeting and even singing with Congressman John Lewis in the basement of Martin Luther King Jr’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. Congressman Lewis talked with our kids for two hours, hugged them all and left them with pearls of wisdom gleaned from his pioneering efforts in the Civil Rights Movement. Our kids were reminded that only 25% of Americans vote. This whole trip is about the prices people paid to have a voice in America. Our kids are continually reminded to honor the past efforts of these activists and participate in the process. John Lewis reminded our kids that we're not done yet. One of his best quotes to them was a reminder to 'get in the way' when they see injustice. Many of our kids are now fired up to fight on behalf of gender identity and LGBTQ+ recognition and rights. No surprise there! But they're finding the tools of the Civil Rights work to help them in their quest. We'll see what they come up with. Our team spent the night in Selma, Alabama earlier and two by two, retraced the steps of 1965's Bloody Sunday March of which John Lewis was a 23 year old leader. The police blocked the road as they silently re-crossed that bridge 50 years later. Because Bryce was so moved by John Lewis' work and story, he wore a tie and neat coat as we got ready to walk. He looked just like John Lewis did 50 years ago. And because of this, he and JP were asked to walk in THE front of this march of almost 200 people. Who knows what documentaries they'll show up on eventually. There were a lot of cameras. As always, combined with Jeff Steinberg's historical background lectures, it was a stunning experience. Our students very much feel like Selma is the birthplace of democracy and independence now, as this was the place that reaffirmed the strength of 1964's Civil Rights Act and led to LBJ's ceiling shattering Voting Rights Act of 1965. So the first day, we asked Javi how it was going. He said he felt like it was day three already. They are being worked! Nicholas continues to dazzle with his articulate knowledge of everything one would hope this group could know. South San Francisco's kids have given him the nickname 'Nicopedia'. He smiled at that... Inspire is now well known among Sojourn participants. We have by far the largest group of 33, who continually stand up and speak with every opportunity. They are so knowledgable, thoughtful and passionate. They really represent our school of arts and sciences so well. So much of their talent with public speaking must stem from all their classroom experiences. They are blowing kids away here... They also are making fast friends from around the country as we learn. And their speakers are urging them to pay attention. Study hard. Participate. Not be silent witnesses. Be people who are going to make the world a better place. (We particularly hope the 'study hard' part resonates with some of them as they return to Inspire.) Today we're celebrating Javier's 18th birthday here. His birthday card states 'The March Goes On' and was signed by all Inspire as well as Jimmy Webb, a 16 year old leader from Selma, 1965, who today is with us and on March 7th, has been invited by President Obama to walk across the Pettus Bridge once more. What a memorable birthday... Much love from Montgomery, Alabama, Marysol, Debbie and 33 Inspirates! Inspire Partnering with CSU, Chico Library Becky Brown took her junior AP students to the CSU, Chico library to do research with one of their librarians. We are working with Kevin Klipfel, the head of the Information Literacy Department at the CSU, Chico library. We are excited about the exposure to college level research and so appreciate the Chico State’s library’s willingness to partner with us. Butte County Immunization Coordinator Provides Measles Information and Resources The measles outbreak and the potential for measles to reach Butte County has raised questions and concerns about the MMR vaccination and whether a person needs additional vaccination. There are no current cases of measles in Butte County, but your efforts to be proactive are appreciated and we would like to provide information that may assist you in responding to concerns. Below is information in response to a couple of the most common questions and concerns received from schools, as well as resources to help answer questions you may receive from parents and/or staff. · There is no requirement for schools to screen ALL student immunization records to identify students who have not been vaccinated against measles, or to determine which students have only received one dose of MMR vaccine. However, per CCR, schools should keep a list of all students with PBE’s so that, in the event of an outbreak, students who are not protected can be quickly identified. These students may be temporarily excluded from attending for their protection. There is an acknowledgement to this effect on the parent-signed PBE. See http://eziz.org/assets/docs/IMM-1080.pdf. · There is no current recommendation for preschool students who have received only the first dose of MMR to get boosted early with the second MMR (routinely recommended at 4-6 yrs prior to Kdg entry). It is not contraindicated to receive the second dose before the 4th birthday. According to CA school law, two doses are required after the first birthday. · For school staff concerned about protection against measles--If you’re unsure whether you’re immune to measles, you should first try to find your vaccination records or documentation of measles immunity. If you do not have written documentation of measles immunity, consider getting vaccinated with MMR vaccine. Another option is to have a doctor test your blood to determine whether you’re immune. People who have not received the MMR vaccination should consider getting vaccinated by first contacting their primary care provider, or pharmacy. If those options are not available, check with the local health department. Some adults are protected with one dose of MMR, while others may be at higher risk and be recommended to receive 2 doses.
