The Giver
By Lois Lowry
This is a mostly independent GT reading activity for the Freedom unit. All of the reading will be done
independently and most of the activities will be done at home. We will use our knowledge of this story in
our discussions for the Freedom unit.
Essential Questions: As you are reading consider how your understanding of the novel The Giver by Lois
Lowry helps you answer these questions.
1. What is the importance of freedom to the individual? What is the importance of freedom to
society?
2. Can a society or individual have too much freedom?
3. To what extent are freedom and responsibility connected?
4. Precise language is important to Jonas’ community. Why is language precision so important? Is the
language used really precise?
5. Should one sacrifice individuality and choice to achieve a perfect society?

Reading Assignments: Each individual is responsible for all of the reading. The class will be put into
groups and will discuss the novel on the assigned dates in groups first. Each person will have an assigned
role for each due date. Specific assignments will be collected from each group member on literary circle
days.
Final Project:
You will create a poster, collage, drawing, or alternate visual which represents the ideas of Freedom,
Responsibility, and Utopia. Consider how the three terms are related or exclusive of each other. Include
material from the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry and additional readings from class. Write an explanatory
essay for your poster that explains and draws conclusions about the visual you have created. Rubric will
be provided before you begin the project.
