Abstract:
Overview of Experiment: What, why, how, results – was hypothesis supported,
contradicted? NOTE: Do not use I, we, me you, our, your (personal pronouns). The

Research: This is a discussion of background information in your OWN WORDS that
would help someone unfamiliar with the knee joint to better understand your reconstruction.
2-3 paragraphs will earn you full credit. Cite references (4 minimum) in the Works
Consulted Section. NOTE: Do not use I, we, me you, our, your (personal pronouns)
Questions to consider, but not limited to:
1. What is a joint? What are the three types of joints?
2. What are the major features of a synovial joint?
3. Identify the type of movement that occurs at the knee joint. What type of synovial
joint is the knee?
4. Describe the structure of the knee joint? Does how its built reflect how it works?
5. What is the specific role of the menisci cartilage?
6. What is the role of the cruciate ligaments?
7. Others…

Variables:
Manipulated Variable: _____________________________________________________
(be specific, what items were used to reconstruct the knee, don’t just say “household items”:
Responding Variable: _____________________________________________________
(what type of movement did you try to regain? What type of movement occurs at a hinge
joint? Be specific)
Experimental Control: _____________________________________________________
(what are you comparing the reconstructed knee too, what is “normal condition”?)
Controlled Variables: _________________________ and_________________________
(what was kept the same throughout the experiment to ensure validity)
3
Procedure: Knee Reconstruction
This is the surgical plan created to put the knee joint back together. The steps should be very
specific so the procedure can be repeated. Diagrams are very useful! It is not necessary to
include a procedure for the deconstruction. NOTE: Do not use I, we, me you, our, your
(personal pronouns).

Diagrams: Each diagram will go on a SEPARATE page. Don’t forget labels and color.
Some students will choose to take pictures of the reconstructed knee and insert pictures into the
lab report, this works well.
Diagram #1: External Knee (femur, tibia, tibial tuberosity, articular cartilage, menisci,
patella, patellar ligament, quadriceps femoris tendon, LCL, MCL)
Diagram #2: Internal Knee (femur, tibia, tibial tuberosity, articular cartilage, ACL, PCL,
menisci)
Diagram #3: Knee Reconstruction. Be sure to include what new structures were used
along with measurements and labels.

Conclusion: NOTE: Do not use I, we, me you, our, your (personal pronouns)
Discuss the following items in paragraph form (does not necessarily have to be in this order).




Answer the investigative question. Was hypothesis supported or contradicted with data?
Include supporting data from the data table.
- What household items were used to replace the knee structures? Include
measurements and structural similarities.
- How did the “new structures” reflect their function (principle of complimentarity)?
- Did the new structures work? Explain why or why not.
Explain how these data support your conclusion.
o Was the surgical plan a success? Did the reconstructed knee regain full range
of motion? What motion was regained?
Errors and Modifications
- What was learned and what modifications would be made if this experiment were
to be repeated? What would be done differently next time? Discuss experimental
errors; corrections; valid results; new questions?
