TO: The Most Puissant General Grand Master The Right Puissant Deputy Grand Master The Right Puissant Grand Principal Conductor of the Work Members of the General Grand Council, Cryptic Masons International RE: Triennial Report of Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation Executive Secretary Having served twenty-eight years as Executive Secretary of Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation, Most Illustrious Companion Marion K. Crum announced his retirement effective October 17, 2012. Most Puissant General Grand Master George C. Sellars conducted a structured search for the appropriate candidate to replace the irreplaceable Marion Crum. On Sunday, October 21, 2012, Grand Master Sellars both humbled and honored me by offering me the position of Executive Secretary. I accepted. Executive Summary for the Triennial Giving CMMRF’s primary function is to raise funds supporting discovery research at the Indiana Center for Vascular Biology and Medicine (ICVBM), located on the campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine. To that end I furnish the following table of statistics in support of our efforts and results for the calendar years 2011, 2012, and 2013. Cumulative ICVBM Grants are $3,670,298.86 Total cumulative contributions are $4,956,189.11 Number of tracked Jurisdictions giving $0.00 over the past three years: 15. Page 2 of 5 I call to your attention and your action that the total giving over the past three years has steadily declined. This continues to be the case in 2014. As I write this report we are almost half way through the calendar year, yet our receipts are at about the 39% level. This decline can be rationalized. Our membership is shrinking. Our membership is aging. Men are out of work. Men, back at work, are retiring debt accumulated while out of work. The list goes on. I remind us of a certain text in scripture, (Matthew 5: 14-16), 14 “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” We should not hesitate to seize any opportunity to display our good works to the world. We can no longer restrict our audience to the greater masonic family. Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation is that shining city on the hill of masonic charities. We have been and are able to maintain our level of support through the excellent return on our investment portfolio. As it is revealed in the numbers displayed, CMMRF gives more to ICVBM than it receives. One hundred percent of our donation receipts go to discovery research at ICVBM. Awards and Recognitions For the Triennial Years 2011, 2012, and 2013 the following awards were earned: Diamond Pins 2 Diamonds 3 Diamonds 4 Diamonds 5 Diamonds 7 Diamonds 11 Diamonds 14 Diamonds 15 Diamonds Number of People Who Received 14 8 11 6 1 1 1 1 Total Pins 48 Individual Plaques Council Plaques Extender Bars 37 23 241 Research Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation partners in discovery with ICVBM recently expanded their research efforts by moving the clinical division to the Richard Roudebush Veterans Hospital. Lead by Dr. Keith March and Dr. Michael Murphy, research is currently addressing the following areas: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Heart Disease Diabetes Blindness COPD / Lung Disease Regenerative Medicine 6. 7. 8. 9. Peripheral Artery and Vascular Disease Burn / Wound Healing Erectile Dysfunction Arthritis To carry the message to constituent regional conferences, grand councils, local councils, and table councils, CMMRF worked with Dr. March to develop a message that could be easily Page 3 of 5 remembered and carried home by the attendees. Most useful was the idea of acronyms. Since October 2012, three acronyms have been used to spread the message. Those acronyms are: 1. HELP 4 ALL 2. HALLS 3. LEAP These acronyms are translated as: H: Heart E: Eyes L: Lung P: Pancreas 4 A: Aorta L: Legs L: Lingering Wounds H: Heart A: Aorta L: Legs L: Lungs S: Skin L: Legs E: Eyes A: Aorta P: Pancreas The experience is that the message is brief, to the point, and countable on the finger tips for easy memory and recall. For information regarding these areas of research, visit www.cmmrf.org. The Website, WWW.CMMRF.ORG As I write this report, the CMMRF web site is being renovated and renewed. We anticipate it will be ready for display at this Triennial Session, but as I have learned, “Just about everything takes longer than you think it will.” A high point of concern is individual, regional, and/or local CMMRF web sites. While CMMRF appreciates the enthusiasm and does not want to crush the spirit, we find that many times the information displayed is obsolete or just plain wrong. CMMRF encourages the constituent grand councils, local councils, and any other organizations promoting CMMRF to simply point to or reference the CMMRF website at www.cmmrf.org. This will ensure that the reader is getting the latest information directly from the CMMRF organization or ICVBM. Summary of Support CMMRF is the philanthropy of the General Grand Council, Cryptic Masons International. CMMRF understands that most Masonic organizations or associations of Masons have their own specific philanthropy. CMMRF; however, is “up close and personal” to each of us. Few indeed are the individuals who can state that their life, the life of a loved one, or someone close to them has not been affected by one or more of the nine conditions listed. As Executive Secretary, I urge all levels of membership in General Grand Council to press forward in their efforts to support CMMRF through Table Council celebrations, participation in other social events, and the establishment of or continuation of some variation on a “Pennies for Progress” program. ICVBM has demonstrated it is willing and pleased to assist the Grand Council or local Council to develop a program for its CMMRF fund raising event. A “Pennies for Progress” program continues to demonstrate that it is a painless manner to generate funds for CMMRF. A primary goal is to raise one penny per member per day. That will be $3.65 per member for the year 2014. Companions, this amount is less than the cost of one trip to McDonalds, one visit to Starbucks, a gallon of gasoline, or a pack of cigarettes. Yet we spend for these noted items almost without thinking multiple times over and over. Additionally, consider achieving the One Hundred Percent Certificate for your Council. These goals are painless and quite accomplishable. (I am aware of one Grand Council that Page 4 of 5 has moved on from a penny a day to a dime a day.) Yes, it can be done. Let’s do something great together for all mankind. For the Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation, Gary G. Wyne, PMIGM Executive Secretary, CMMRF Page 5 of 5
