I could have called this guide anything. One thing that was out of the question was Couponing for Dummies. How dumb could you be if you are willing to find the time to get smart about saving? Many of our parents and grandparents may have been Couponers but never to the extent that people coupon today. Please be warned that this is Not Yo Grandmama’s Couponing! Even though Grandma probably never imagined what we can do with coupons, she would be proud. It use to be that you go to the grocery store and slide a 35 cent off coupon on the counter and get 35 cents off. Smart shoppers know how to turn that 35 cents into $1.05 and possibly even turn a once greatly priced item into a freebie or if you are like me, a money maker! In this guide you will learn the basics of couponing. The rest will come with experience and trial and error. What you need to learn now is the true value of a coupon. The True Value of A Coupon The true value of a coupon is not the value you see when you look at the coupon. A coupon is worth much more if you know where to shop. Some stores take a coupon and only give you the value of the coupon off their products. Then there are stores like Albertsons, Kroger, Tom Thumb, and Brookshires who double and even triple the coupon’s value. This does not mean that couponing is not advantageous at other stores. Stores like Target make couponing more fun than you can image. They offer free gift cards with purchases and coupons that can be stacked along with the coupons you clip from the newspapers or print online. You can never judge a coupon by its cover. There is all kinds of value hidden inside the coupon, you just have to know how to find it. By shopping at stores like Albertsons, Kroger, Tom Thumb, and Brookshires you can increase the value of your coupon just be being savvy. Stores that double and triple coupons have special rules that you must follow in order to get the most out of your coupons. Don’t worry, the rules are simple and can be quite fun once you get started. Each store has their own coupon policy and should be examined thoroughly before attempting to maximize on sales. Kroger: Kroger doubles and triples coupons. Kroger will double manufacturer’s coupons up to fifty cents. Fifty-one cents and more are deducted at face value. Kroger will triple manufacturer’s coupons up to thirty-nine cents. You are only allowed to double and triple coupons on a limit of 3 like items. Scenario: Kammi went shopping at her favorite Kroger. They had Suave deodorant on sale 10 for $10. Kammi knows that you don’t have to purchase 10 items unless it is specifically expressed in the circular. After examining the circular, Kammi discovers that she does not have to purchase 10 items so she grabs a fist full of Suave $0.50 off coupons and heads to Kroger. When she checks out, she puts all 7 of the Suave deodorants she plans to purchase on the counter. Excited about the purchase she waves her coupons in the face of her cashier, Mona. Mona reminds Kammi that in order to maximize her savings she can only use three of her coupons at a time. Using three coupons on three items that are just alike will let her reach Kroger’s doubling/tripling limit. Uncertain, Kammi tells Mona to just ring her up. Her total is $7. After her coupon savings, Kammi gets an additional $5 taken off her total. This is not the $0 total Kammi expected. Mona explains that only three of her coupons will double because of the double and triple limit of 3 items. Kammi only receives face value for the remaining coupons. Noticing the disappointment in Kammi’s eyes, Mona cancelled the order and scanned three Suave deodorants taking only the coupons as payment. Then Mona did another transaction for the next three and one more transaction for the last one. Kammi’s total for the day, $0. Albertsons: Albertsons doubles and triples coupons. Albertsons will double manufacturer’s coupons up to fifty cents. Fifty-one cents and more are deducted at face value. Albertsons will triple manufacturer’s coupons up to thirty-nine cents. You are only allowed to double and triple coupons on a limit of 3 like items. You will find that both Kroger and Albertsons have similar policies. Another similarity is dealing with printable coupons. Internet printed coupons are accepted at the transgression of the Manager at both Albertsons and Kroger. Tom Thumb: Tom Thumb no longer doubles or triples coupons. Coupons are only worth face value. Tom Thumb accepts internet coupons for now but just like seasons, things may change. Please contact your local Tom Thumb to see if there is a variation in your area. Brookshire’s: Brookshire’s is a tricky store. Some of their stores double and triple coupons on certain days. When Brookshire’s doubles and triples the general rule of thumb is that Brookshire’s will double manufacturer’s coupons up to fifty cents. Fiftyone cents and more are deducted at face value. Brookshire’s will also triple manufacturer’s coupons up to thirty-nine cents. You are only allowed to double and triple coupons on a limit of 1 like item. Some Brookshire stores only double and triple on certain days. There are some stores that double and triple daily but for those who limit you to certain days, you must check their ads in order to find out if doubling and tripling is on for that week. Accepts internet printed coupons for now. Why Do Stores Hate Internet Printed Coupons? I did not want to leave you with the impression that all stores hate internet coupons. They actually do not. There are a lot of stores who take them in the Texas area. Some of which are stores like Target, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Family Dollar, and General Dollar. The iffy part about internet printed coupons is not actually the coupon itself, it’s the cashiers. Some cashiers are not very coupon savvy. We don’t hold that against them because we all have to learn, right? When a store is presented with the warning of a fraudulent coupon going around, it sends the store into a panic. These stores become extra vigilante about making sure that the company is not being taken advantage of in any kind of way. Honestly, I cannot blame them because they cannot give away tons of free Doritos because this will eventually hurt their bottom line. What does bother me is that many of these companies have employees who do not fully understand their own coupon policy. The general rule of thumb with internet printed coupons for these stores is that if it does not beep, accept it. You will find some people who ask where you got your coupon and it’s easier to just answer them and move on. Smart Source internet printed coupons typically have a water mark helping to prove their validity. Internet coupons cannot be copied or this constitutes fraud. Smart Source coupons have the watermark for validity so if you copy the coupon, you are busted! More Perks to . . . More perks to shopping at certain stores include coupon stacking. Coupon stacking is when a store offers a store coupon that you can use alongside a manufacturer’s coupon. This would be a coupon that has the store’s name on it and it does not say manufacturer coupon anywhere on the coupon. Stacking is a really tedious yet exciting task. Its best explained with a helpful scenario. Scenario 1: Dian is an avid couponer. Dian noticed that Target had a store coupon in the coupon insert that stated if she bought Windex she would receive $2 off by using the Target coupon. This was awesome. Since Target allows you to stack, she will be using the $2 off Target coupon (which displays the Target logo) and she will be using the $1 off manufacturer coupon she found in the same insert. The Windex is on sale for $3.76. By using the $2 and $1 off coupons, Dian will save $3. This means her total will be $0.76! Scenario 2: Susan goes to Walgreens to purchase Listerine. Walgreens offers a store coupon that reads $2 off. Susan remembers seeing a Listerine coupon in her coupon binder and quickly grabs the $1 off coupon and runs to check the price on the shelf. Susan realizes she has stumbled upon an amazing deal. Walgreens has a 1 liter bottle of Listerine for $5.27. Initially she thinks that this deal can be passed over until a store associate reminds Susan to check for another coupon in the Walgreens IVC book. This is a book that is filled with even more store coupons but these coupons are super special because they can be multiplied by the number of items you purchase. Susan discovers a $2 off coupon in the IVC book. She then goes to the register with one bottle of Listerine. Susan is worried that this deal might be too good to be true so she does the math at the register. First Susan gives the cashier the $2 off IVC book. So far so good, there are no issues so she gives the cashier the $2 off coupon from the Walgreens ad, marked store coupon. The cashier happily takes the coupon and asks if she has the manufacturer coupon as well. Susan grabs her $1 off coupon and hands it to the cashier. Susan’s total, $0.27. Scenario 3: Kristi loves CVS. She really likes the way CVS pays her to shop. Kristi needs nourishment to keep shopping and she remembers seeing a coupon in the CVS circular for Kettle chips. The store coupon gives her $0.50 off Kettle chips purchased at CVS. Kristi reaches into her coupon organizer and finds she has a $0.75 off any Kettle chips coupon. Stacking these two coupons, Kristi now has a discount of $1.25. Kristi walks in and notices a grab bag of Kettle chips for $0.99. Kristi realizes that this gives her $0.26 of overage that can be used on something else. Since Kristi is thirsty she grabs a drink for $0.50. She does not have a coupon so she relies on the overage from the chips. Kristi’s subtotal is $0.24 and she now has the strength to continue her couponing adventure. Overage Overage may very well be the biggest no no in couponing. Unfortunately, there are times when overage cannot be avoided. It’s what you do with your overage that matters. When shopping and taking advantage of the double and triple coupon blessings, we find that we may have a coupon for something that drops the price so low that we are hitting negative numbers. This negative number is called a credit. That credit is called overage. Overage, when purchasing a number of items, can be used to lower your overall total. This is the best method to use overage because not all registers will allow for overage. Some registers will not accept a coupon that gives you more for a product that the product is priced. This is why you utilize overage when there is more than one item being purchased. Scenario: Beth went to Kroger and found an awesome deal on Quaker Quakes, Cheetohs, sausage, biscuits, and bacon. The deal was so great that she could not pass it up. She had coupons that doubled and tripled and gave her $3.75 worth of overage. She wanted to stock up on popcorn kernels for a school project for her 5yr old. This was the perfect time because cashiers are not supposed to give you cash when a credit appears. They typically panic and clear off the screen and leave you with a zero balance. Beth won’t let that happen. Instead she purchases four jars of popcorn kernels that are on sale for $1 each. Her total is $0.25. The Anatomy of A Barcode Coupons that can be doubled and tripled automatically have a barcode number that begins with the number 5. Coupons that begin with the number 9 do NOT double automatically. With that being said, let’s view a barcode: Barcode numbers are not read by computers. Computers read the black and white bars and the numbers are for the humans. These numbers are called HR or human readable bars. They can be quite valuable when you look at your receipt and realize a coupon did not do what was anticipated. The first 5 digits of the barcode is the manufacturer’s code or ID. The next 3 digits are the product or “family” code. When paired together, the product and manufacturer code let the customer know what products can be purchased using this coupon. When dealing with the product/family code, if there is one zero present, a different item from the same product family might work with this coupon. If two zeros are present, this coupon can be used on any product in that product family. When the numbers 992 are present in the product/family code, this means that any product of any brand will work with this coupon without the need for verification. All coupons must be used as directed on the coupon per manufacturer’s directions. The final two digits are the value code. The true awesomeness (yes awesomeness) of this code can be better explained with the use of a chart. This chart (provided by http://www.barcodeschool.com) should be printed and placed in your coupon corner so that you may reference it when necessary. Coupon Text Coupon text is probably one of the most misinterpreted texts in the couponing world. I thought it would be a great idea to clarify the text. This is not only for your own sanity but for the sanity of the confused cashier. “One coupon per purchase”: This means that the consumer can use one coupon per item being purchased. This is to prevent consumers from using more than one manufacturer’s coupon on one item. Scenario: Shori went shopping for toothpaste. She had 5 coupons for Crest toothpaste and wanted to utilize all 5 coupons. When she arrived at the register, the cashier reminded her that she could only use one coupon per purchase. Shori had 5 coupons and 5 tubes of toothpaste. Each tube used one coupon. This qualifies as one coupon per purchase because Shori is purchasing 5 items. “One coupon per household”: This is typically seen on store coupons. It sounds really restrictive but it’s not as bad as it seems. This text is used to limit consumers from making multiple trips to the store using several coupons and depleting the store’s stock. Scenario: Leon wanted to stock up on some General Mills cereal. The cereal was on sale for $0.99. Leon had coupons to make the cereal $0.44 each. The coupon stated one per household so Leon was only allowed to use the one coupon for that day at that store. The coupon was rare so Leon did not notice the text. He put everything back except the one box of cereal and made his purchase. Leon knew there was another Kroger on his way to work so he just stocked up on more whenever he passed another Kroger. Even though it seems quite explanatory, some cashiers still misinterpret the meaning of these common coupon phrases and it can be quite annoying. You have to remember that not everyone is coupon savvy. Sometimes it’s just an honest mistake but then there are times when its improper training. Either way, don’t lose your head. Refer to the reference chart in the manual complete with all the numbers to their corporate offices. Maybe if we let them feel a bit of our frustration with this issue, more companies will see to it that their employees receive proper training from a coupon savvy individual. This would make it much easier on the consumer and their employees. Sale Cycle Almost as valuable as knowing how to purchase items, is the knowledge of when to purchase items. Wouldn’t it be great if there was something that showed when stores put certain things on sale? Maybe something like a sales cycle, perhaps? The Smart Source coupon is a coupon created by the Smart Source coupon printing company. When printing this coupon, you must go back to the original link and click print again in order to print more than one coupon. PDF: Another type of coupon is a PDF. This coupon allows you to print unlimited coupons. This is not a very common coupon because of its lack of control of the number of coupons printed. Bricks: Bricks is the name of the company that designed the coupon printing software for this particular coupon. When printing this coupon, there is a limit to how many you can print. This software will usually print 2 by hitting the back browser 3 times after the first one prints. Coupon Policies Stores have their own policies regarding coupons. Some are quite detailed but there are others who are short sweet and to the point. Couponers have found that it’s best to take a copy of the store’s coupon policy with you, just in case a cashier is not as familiar with the policy as you are! Here are a few coupon policies to get you started. More coupon policies can be attained by visiting customer service at your local store or by visiting that store’s website and contacting customer service. Before you shop, make sure there have not been any revisions to your store’s coupon policy. Walgreens: As a customer-focused retailer, Walgreens encourages the use of coupons by our customers in our retail stores, in accordance with the following guidelines. As an example (and not as an offer), if a $10 minimum purchase is required for a customer reward, a customer's order at full retail would be $12, a Club Card discount of $1.75 applies, and a manufacturer's coupon of $1 applies, the customer would be given credit for a $10.25 purchase, and would be eligible for the reward (assuming compliance with all other requirements) even though the customer's cash payment would be only $9.25. The manufacturer's coupon would not be deducted from the total for purposes of determining reward eligibility. 13. References to a threshold purchase requirement will exclude purchases of: Beer, Wine, Spirits, Tobacco Products, Fuel, All Fluid Items in the Refrigerated Dairy Section (including Fluid Dairy and Dairy Substitutes), Prescription Items and Co-payments, Bus/Commuter Passes, Fishing/Hunting Licenses and Tags, Postage Stamps, Money Orders, Money Transfers, Ski Tickets, Amusement Park Tickets, Event Tickets, Lottery Tickets, Phone Cards, Gift Cards, and Gift Certificates; also excluded are: Bottle Deposits, Redemption Values, and Sales Taxes. Internet Printed Coupons: 14. We gladly accept internet printed coupons. The same manufacturer and store coupon rules above apply to all internet printed coupons. 15. Internet printed coupons must be capable of scanning at checkout. 16. Internet printed coupons must have serial numbers and must follow an industry-standard format. 17. Manufacturer internet printed coupons must clearly indicate that they are a manufacturer coupon and must have a valid manufacture address on the printed coupon. 18. We will not accept "free product" internet printed manufacturer coupons. Load to Card Club Coupons: 19. Internet and digital coupons that have been electronically loaded to a Safeway Club Card are automatically redeemed at the time of purchase after the club card number has been entered. All other coupon policies above apply to electronic coupons that are loaded to a club card. Doubling of Coupons: 20. Check with your local store regarding ‘double coupon' advertised promotions where customers will receive double the coupon face value off the regular or club card price up to the advertised limit. Not all locations offer double coupon promotions. Limitations and restrictions for double coupon promotions may change at any time. Changes will be posted in store only. Coupon Stacking: 21. Safeway does not allow a customer to redeem two or more manufacturer coupons against the same item in a single transaction. 22. Coupon stacking policies for manufacturer coupons apply to paper and electronic coupons that have been loaded to a club card. 23. If a customer presents two coupons for the same item in a single transaction, Safeway will give the highest discount for that item, subject to the terms of the applicable offer and/or coupon. Rainchecks: 24. Rainchecks expire ninety (90) days from the date issued and will not be accepted at any Safeway store after that time. 25. We reserve the right to limit Raincheck quantities based on product availability and advertised limits. 26. Rainchecks can be issued for up to six (6) items unless otherwise stated in the applicable advertisement. 27. Rainchecks can be issued for all items, excluding Beer, Wine, Spirits, Tobacco Products, Fuel, All Fluid Items in the Refrigerated Dairy Section (including Fluid Dairy and Dairy Substitutes), which exclusions may vary from state to state. 28. Rainchecks can be offered for store super coupon items unless otherwise specified on the coupon. Rainchecks will not be provided for items advertised as "clearance", "while supplies last," limited quantities," or other designation indicating a limited supply. We may change these rules at any time. All coupon redemption terms are subject to the terms of the rules in effect at time of redemption. Rule changes may become effective without advance notice or advertisement. The current rules will be posted at the customer service area in each store. You are also advised to periodically check our website for any changes to these rules. We reserve the right to change this policy at any time. Our registers are set to allow 1 CVS coupon and 1 manufacturer coupon per item. Free coupons or “offers at the register” (OAR’s) are unearned and issued to you as a valued member of the CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare program. These coupons take the form of “open ended” coupons such as $3 off $15 or a certain dollar amount off a specific item. In any given transaction our registers will allow only one “open ended” coupon per transaction. CVS Extra Buck coupons are earned when you make a qualifying purchase. These print out instantly at the register upon reaching the threshold for the offer. You can use more than one Extra Buck coupon provided the purchase threshold has been met for each offer amount on a per-transaction basis. In the case where a particular item is on sale for “buy one get one free” (BOGO), you are only allowed to use one manufacturer’s BOGO coupon. For instance, if Revlon lipstick is on sale for BOGO, you can use one manufacturer’s BOGO coupon. You would get both items free and pay any applicable tax. We reserve the right to limit quantities after the first purchase. If our store is running a sale for BOGO, you can use two manufacturer’s coupons for a specific dollar amount off. For example, if Revlon lipstick is on sale at our store for BOGO, you can use two $1.00 off Revlon lipstick manufacturer coupons. CVS/pharmacy does accept manufacturers’ coupons that have been obtained from manufacturer sponsored and/or authorized Web sites. The coupon should be complete and contain a bar code that can be scanned at the register. If the coupon does not scan, the cashier should politely inform you that we cannot accept your coupon. We do not allow manual overrides at the register for coupons printed from the Internet. CVS/pharmacy will not accept offers printed from unauthorized Internet postings or reproductions, copies, or facsimiles. We do not accept competitors’ coupons for front store items. We feel that our sales and ExtraCare program are comparable if not better than any sales or coupons offered by our competitors. We also do not accept any expired coupons, CVS or otherwise. We do not “double” or “triple” coupons. Family Dollar Coupon Policy Family Dollar Stores, Inc. Prices may be higher in stores located in Alaska and Hawaii. Price Matching at Target.com Pricing for products on Target.com may vary from Target stores and from the Target Weekly Ad. We do not match the price of our online merchandise with the price offered by Target stores or another company, and Target stores do not match the price of our online merchandise. Price Adjustments If you see a lower price listed in one of our Target Weekly Ads, we will adjust the price of your online order to match the advertised price if you purchased the item within 1-7 days prior to the ad; you contact us during the Weekly Ad where the lower price is featured; and the lower price is not on a clearance item. Add to Cart to See Low Price The “Add to Cart to see low price" message indicates a discount is applied to the item and is calculated when you add the item to your Cart. You can see the price by clicking the “Add to cart to see low price” link. Please be assured that simply adding an item to your cart does not obligate you to buy it--you can always remove the item from your cart. Confirmed Prices and Pricing Errors We cannot confirm the price of an item until your order enters the shipping process nor will we charge your credit card until your order enters the shipping process. Please note that your Order Acknowledgment means that your order request has been received; it does not mean that your order has been shipped or that the price of an item has been confirmed. Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items on our Web site may be mispriced. As part of our shipping procedures, we verify price before an item is shipped out. • If an item's correct price is lower than our stated price, we charge the lower amount and ship you the item. • If an item's correct price is higher than our stated price we will cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation via email. Current Conversion If you're a guest from outside the U.S. who would like to ship an order to a U.S. address, you can pay with any of the following credit cards: Target Visa, American Express, Visa, MasterCard or Discover. When you order from Target.com, your credit card is charged in U.S. dollars. If you live outside the U.S., your bank will convert this charge into your local currency. We don't have a currency converter on our Web site, but there are several sites that can do this for you--just search for "currency converter" on any World Wide Web search engine. Special Delivery Charges Oversized and extremely heavy items are marked on their product information pages as requiring a special delivery charge. The delivery charge varies depending on the size and weight of the item. These charges will be included in the Shipping & Handling subtotal of your order.
