NEW YEARS EVE PARTY 31 ST DECEMBER 2014 ADAMS HALL

NEWS FROM THE MANAGEMENT BOARD
The Board of Management met on 19th November 2014 and held a moment of silence in
memory of
John England-Crowther, a former long standing shareholder, Board Member and Chairman
for many years. John passed away on 18th November and our thoughts are with his family at
this very sad time.
The Board were updated on a seminar and a conference attended by two members.
Members approved an advert designed to attract applicants to become a Board member and
strengthen our skills and experience. Members discussed pensions and financial performance
figures including Quarter 2.
Chairman of the Sheltered Housing Committee and the Finance, Audit and Scrutiny
Committee reported on their recent meetings.
The Board are getting together on 3rd December 2014 for a Strategy Day.
Members discussed recent changes at Glebe Court Nursing Home.
On behalf of the Board we wish everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year.
Graham Lilly, Chief Executive
FRIENDS CORNER
Firstly I must say a big thank you to Karen and all her many helpers, who made the
Christmas Fayre such a success and made £2,100 profit for our funds. At this time of the
year we must be looking forward to Christmas and the New Year. I have not made any New
Year resolutions for the last few years (I have given up smoking, swearing and all the bad
things that I used to do) but this year I am going to join The Bridge Club and The Cribbage
Club – to keep the old grey cells working.
There is a notice on the notice board asking people to donate only one hour a month to help
with shopping baskets – now that looks like a good New Year’s resolution.
May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Gordon
Past Events
THE BENCURTIS WALKING GROUP
Past Walks: Wednesday 29th October – Unfortunately the walk at Westerham had to be
changed at short notice, but we hope to re-schedule it next year if suitably easy access can be
found. Instead, eleven of us set off in light drizzle to walk via St John’s churchyard across
the fields to Addington Village. The rain increased steadily, though, and it was a decidedly
damp party which arrived at the Cricketers/Harvester for a welcome hot coffee and lunch.
The option of walking back by Sparrows Den and Springpark Woods was rejected in favour
of returning home by bus.
Wednesday 12th November – Pat and Ernie led ten walkers through Morden Hall Park on a
rather wet day. Coffee and then lunch was taken at the National Trust restaurant, after which
the sun came out, so a circular walk was possible, although wet under foot after the rain.
Unfortunately, the plant nursery has now been closed down until the Spring next year, when
it will be taken over and run by the National Trust next door.
Future Walks:
Wednesday 3rd December – Walk led by Anne A. from Beckenham Hill to Ravensbourne
via Beckenham Place Park (new route) – beautiful at any time of the year. Travel from
Bromley South to Beckenham Hill station, return from Ravensbourne station for lunch either
in Bromley or Hayes.
Please note we will meet at 9.45am in order to catch the train.
There will not be a second walk in December because of the many Christmas events taking
place during the month. The next walk will probably be on Wednesday 7th January.
Please check the notice boards for further details and any changes.

Christmas Fayre
May I add my most grateful thanks to everybody, residents and staff alike for their help and
support no matter how much time they could spare. Our approx total of £2,100 showed that
working as a team can produce a marvellous result which helps us to continue to provide
extra amenities for everyone to enjoy.
Our village shop also made £300 on Christmas goods. Having organized the Fayres for
longer than I like to remember, we have never had so much help which resulted in a most
relaxing and stress free day.
We would like to thank the lady who made and donated the beautiful chocolate cottage which
we raffled and was won by our shop manager’s grand daughter.
Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Bencurtis Debating Society
On Thursday 6th November we enjoyed a very informative discussion on
“devolution”. The Welsh assembly in Cardiff devolved in 2000 with limited
legislation. The Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, Edinburgh is a legislative body
which can lower or raise income tax by 3p in the pound. Northern Ireland
Parliament, at Stormont, Belfast have many transferred powers (2010).
Westminster UK Parliament is technically able to pass laws for any part of the UK,
but only deals with devolved issues with approval from Devolved governments. We
also now have the possibility that Manchester will have it’s own Mayor ….regional
assembly?
Gordon S. had done a lot of research which helped us enormously to understand it
all so much better.
We are having a party sometime in the New Year (date still to be agreed), when we
will discuss the next subject to be debated. Any ideas??

GLEBE COURT NEWS
We enjoyed a lively show from Jamie, one of our regular entertainers - ‘We’ll Meet
Again’ - which was a tribute to the 1940s, with hits from the blitz, giving us a great
sing-a-long to the songs of the war. He dresses up with lots of bright costumes, male
and female, and is not worried about how he looks, much to the amusement of all of
us watching.
Victoria, the amazing violinist, came to perform and made her violin sing with a
wonderfully varied programme. She looks beautiful and elegant in her long gown,
and performs with lots of energy and enthusiasm which residents absolutely love.
A new volunteer, Katie, who is training to be an Art Therapist, has had some great
sessions with two budding artists, Joy and Helena, who thoroughly enjoyed painting
still life and flowers.
We’ve been watching Autumn watch and the live tennis from the 02 in London, and
residents are keeping up to date with Strictly Come Dancing (and are glad Judy is
out!). This brings back many happy memories of dressing up and going dancing on a
Saturday evening.
Caroline and Sharon, from Head Office, had a lovely afternoon treating some of our
residents to manicures, they loved choosing nail varnish from the pretty variety of
colours Caroline brought. Residents can’t wait for next month’s pampering, ready for
Christmas.
Tristan and Jim have both been to play the piano for our residents, who loved their
different styles and approach.
Residents saw all the poppies on television and watched the Remembrance Day
service and the parade from the Cenotaph. We observed the two minutes silence on
Armistice Day. For some residents the memories of the war are difficult as family and
friends were lost and times were hard.
We continue our full selection of activities and the Namaste Care Programme every
week, seven days a week and evenings too.
We look forward to seeing you all at our Christmas coffee
morning
On Saturday 6th December 10.30am – 12.30pm with
entertainment, refreshment stalls
We wish you all a Happy and Peaceful Christmas.
