Dixon has drafted different products made from sheet metal for Design Week (April 17 to 22, 2012). These are fabricated on TRUMPF machines during the run of the fair. What’s so very special here is that the machines are not located in a factory, but will be set up in Milan’s Museum of Science and Technology. Tom Dixon is thus turning the museum into the “MOST Design Salon”, an epicenter for new design, food, culture and technology for Milan Design Week. “MOST turns the National Museum of Science and Technology Milan into an ambitious environment for innovation and culture. We can even demonstrate the manufacturing process, with assistance by TRUMPF, and that has a very special allure,” as the famed designer stated. Machine operators and sales personnel from TRUMPF Homberger s.r.l., TRUMPF’s Italian subsidiary, located near Milan, will be on hand in the museum during the six days of the fair. They will manufacture a shade called Stamp Lamp and a prototype chair, reminiscent of the hood for the legendary Citroën 2CV automobile. The chair is fabricated on the TruPunch 3000 and the TruBend 5130. Stamp Lamp is a flat-packed shade, made from the wasted sheet metal used to create the chair. Lamp and chair are manufactured from galvanized mild steel, 1 millimeter thick. The preparations for this unusual project took four months. Tom Dixon sought best-of-class manufacturing for his design ideas – and was looking for support while optimizing the engineering Press Release TRUMPF Group Press/Public Relations Heidi-Melanie Maier +49 7156 303-31720 heidi.maier@de.trumpf.com Constructive cooperation for top design design. “It is only rarely that we encounter such an exceptional task,” noted Paolo Musante, Managing Director for TRUMPF in Italy. “But ultimately our machines are ideal for the kinds of stringent demands that are quite normal when we work with contemporary design. Our experts approached the task with superb commitment.” Those who are interested in visiting this highly unusual Digital Industrial Revolution “can do so until April 22, 2012, at the Museum of Science and Technology. The museum’s Railway Building, full scale replica of a 19th Century railway station provides a fitting setting. There will also be a second opportunity to see this design project. That will be at the LAMIERA, the Italian machine tools fair, taking place in Bologna from May 9 to 12, 2012. TRUMPF will be showing this project once again there, at its booth B08/C07 in Hall 30.
