Program Details:
[Keynote] “Higgs, Quarks and the Universe”, Dr. Moo Young Han, Duke University
Recently a high-profile publicity has been generated by the discovery at the Large Hadron Collider of a
"Higgs-like" particle. It generated a frenzy of excitments and hyped up reportings in the media. Very
few outside the specialty understand the concept of "sponteneous symmetry breaking mechanism"
(Higgs mechanism) and its ramifications. I will explain the spontaneous symmetry breaking using
algebra and simple calculus, and explain how the masses of particles may come about.
A brief mention will be made as to who first introduced the idea (a Japanese-American) and who first
coined the word "Higgs particle"(a Korean-American, deceased). The ramifications of the Higgs
mechanism on the quarks and the beginning of the Universe will also be addressed."
[Focus Group]
1. “Progress and Opportunity in Natural Sciences for the Next Ten Years”, Prof. Chueng R. Ji, North
Carolina State University
Eleven questions were addressed by the US National Research Council to cover the area of natural
sciences connecting the two extremes of the universe: the very large and the very small. This session is
focused on the short-term progress and opportunity for the next ten years to answer these questions.
2. “R&D in Agbiotech Industry: Difference from Researches in Academia”, Dr. Hangsik Moon, Syngenta
R&D in a company may be quite different from those in academia. This session will give you some taste
of the life cycle of a commercial project in an agricultural biotechnology company
3. “Natural science vs. Social science: conflict, crossover or collaboration”, Prof. Dohyeong Kim, North
Carolina Central University
Almost all scholars are talking about the importance of interdisciplinary studies, but it seems unclear
how natural and social scientists can collaborate in synergy with each other. This session will explore
potential arena where natural and social scientists interplay
4. How to Retire Early: Technology Commercialization from your lab to marketing to funding”,
Sangkoo Kim, Redhat
How do you turn your idea into a multi-million dollar business? An interesting mix of panel members
including an engineer, technology management professor, successful start-up marketer and finance
funder will explain the step-by-step process of risk and rewards.
5. “Securing a Professional Position”, Prof. Youngsoo R. Kim, North Carolina State University
Are you in the middle of applying for a professional job in the United States? This session will present
how to prepare for different steps involved in professional job application, including job search,
interview, presentation, post-interview follow-up, and negotiation.
