“Organizing a Protest Movement”
Objective: Having studied methods used by African Americans during the era of the Civil Rights Movement to obtain their rights,
students will plan and organize a persuasive protest speech about a historical topic.
Standards:
W.10.7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve
a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding
of the subject under investigation.
W.10.8. Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess
the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of
ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
SL.10.4. Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically such that listeners can follow the line
of reasoning and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.
Student Objectives:
1.
Students will work individually to organize and simulate a “Civil Rights” era protest.

You will be making a video of your protest speech and uploading it to YouTube.

Upload your video to YouTube.
i. With your Gmail address, you already have a YouTube account; your YouTube account is the same
login as your Gmail account.
After you upload the video, copy & paste the link to the GoogleDoc your teacher has created.

Students must complete the following.
 Clearly identify the issue that is the focus of their protest.
 Research the pros of the issue (two outside sources must be used and cited correctly)
 Plan and organize a protestYou are the speaker; you are giving the “I have a dream” speech

Your protest speech should be organized in the following format. (Overall speech should run about 3 minutes)
A. Introduction
a. Line that gains interest
b. Background/information about the topic
c. Call to action—by the end of the speech I hope to convince you to…(may want to include
slogan/peroration here – a good idea may to be to keep looping back to this throughout the speech)
B. Weakest Appeal/Argument (emotion, authority, logic)
C. Second Strongest Appeal /Argument (emotion, authority, logic)
D. Strongest Appeal/Argument (emotion, authority, logic)
E. Conclusion
a. What is the call to action again?
b. Interesting ending…
c. Conclude with slogan
*Don’t forget to name your appeal to authority. Who is it and why should I take this person’s word for it?*
5.
Protest Signs: Design at least one sign to use as part of your protest. You can hold it, have it posted behind you, etc.
6. You must submit a Works Cited page in MLA format.
