2.1 Finding and saving the references
- footnotes (in the text), reference list/bibliography (at the end of the thesis)
• Browsing online and on
the shelves in the library,
consulting with your
advisor and fellow
students
• Guidelines for references:
–
–

–
Accuracy/precision
Integrity
Consistency

UNIVERSITY OF OSLO - Norwegian Centre for Human Rights
2.2 Reading and evaluating
• Tip: “Don’t necessarily read
other students’ theses at an
early stage – you don’t know
their grade or quality”
• But: check out the
bibliography/references
Evaluate – examples from:
• Target group - Who is the text
written for?
• Time period - Does the
publication date cover the
period you are interested in?
• Author - Who is the source
author?
• Publisher- Who is behind the
information?
• Genre - is it popular or
scientific material?
UNIVERSITY OF OSLO - Norwegian Centre for Human Rights
2.3 Writing
• Begin to write about what you
think is interesting
• Write a little at a time
• Take a break when you feel
you cannot write more
• Present your text to others in
writing groups even though it
is not perfect.
• Good authors write many
times and they rewrite
• Remember, you will get a lot of
help during this semester
– Advisors, Monday seminars,
Exam paper covering the
methodology and design of
the thesis, fellow students
• And: the library is always open
for you (staffed between 9 am
and 3 pm)

good tips there)
