The History of the King! BY: MISS YOUNG Elvis’ Childhood Elvis was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a two room house his family built. Elvis came from a working class family that made little money. Elvis’ family were church goers which later in life influences his music. When Elvis was just ten-years-old he sang “Old Shep” in a youth talent contest at Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show. Elvis won fifth place and received $5.00 in fair ride tickets. In 1946, Elvis’ father bought Elvis his first guitar for $12.95 (today guitars can cost between $150.00 to $300.00)! Left is Elvis’ first house and birth place. The Big Move When Elvis was thirteen-years-old he did a farewell concert at Milam Junior High on November 6, 1948 before Elvis and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, Elvis was considered a misfit with his long hair (compared to the day’s standards) and grown out sideburns. Elvis attended Humes High and participated in the student talent show. Elvis was amazed by the applause from the audience and that he had won. Moving on to Bigger and Brighter things! The summer after Elvis graduated he stops by The Memphis Recording Service, home of the Sun label and makes his first demo “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin,” the cost for making a demo was $4.00. He gives his first demo to his mother for a belated birthday present. January 1954 Elvis goes back to Sun Studio to make another demo and the own, Sam Phillips, is in to hear him. At first Sam doesn’t like his style but in the summer of 1954, Elvis pairs up with Scotty Moore and Bill Black. Elvis’ Break!
