Election of 1860

In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected president. In
response South Carolina succeeded from the union.
Lincoln campaigned to stop the spread of slavery in
new states. The south states couldn't’t take anymore
oppression from the federal government and left the
union.

 Fort Sumter was the first battle of the civil
war
 South Carolina fired upon the military base
at Fort Sumter which led to the beginning of
the civil war

 In the fall of 1862 president Lincoln passed
the Emancipation Proclamation
 This freed all African Americans in America
including the states that succeeded

 The battles of Fredericksburg and
Chancellorsville were decisive military
victories for the confederacy.
 It showed the lack of leadership in the Union
army and that the south could win

The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the


Confederacy doesn’t win another major battle

Union General George Meade did not pursue the
confederates and was then replaced by Ulysses S.
Grant

 Robert E. Lee finally surrendered to Grant at
the Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865
 This marked the end of the civil war and
ushered in the Reconstruction Era
