No-Smoke policy
enforcement
The policy applies to everybody while on property
owned or leased by UNT. The policy applies at all
times. An individual who sees someone violating
the policy is asked to confront the person and
remind them of the policy. If these requests are
unsuccessful, the witness is asked to contact
Human Resources or the Office of the Vice
President of Student Affairs. Because the policy is
currently in a trial period, no tickets will be given
out at the moment.
Secondhand smoke kills children and adults who
do not smoke.

The University of North
Texas takes action
against smoking
A campus controversy
About the University of
North Texas
Smoking ban comes to
UNT
A quick look at UNT
A new semester brings changes
The University of North Texas is one of Texas’
largest universities, catering to nearly 40,000
students and growing. UNT currently offers 97
bachelors, 87 masters, and 35 doctoral degree
programs.
As of January 1, 2013 all students asked to put
away their cigarettes while on campus. This policy
has been in the works for quite some time. UNT
will hold a six-month trial period beginning
January 1, 2013. The trial period is to help inform
students and make people aware of the policy rules.
The president of UNT is aiming for a safe and
healthy environment here at UNT, and people who
violate the policy are asked to contact human
resources so they can take it into consideration with
further action taken. This is a student voluntary
action, rather than a disciplinary action. The new
policy will remove all ashtrays from the campus in
an effort to stop the
smoke. The use of
electronic cigarettes
will be permitted on
campus. Students,
faculty and staff will be
allowed to smoke on
campus if they are in
their automobiles and if the windows are up. More
information can be found online at

UNTs Mission
“UNT is a public research university deeply
committed to advancing educational excellence and
preparing students to become thoughtful, engaged
citizens of the world.”
President Rawlins view
UNT president Lane Rawlins speaks
up about policy
Comfort and health is a key factor for a good
campus, and that’s exactly what president Rawlins
is striving for through this policy. The policy is
designed to keep the campus cleaner for all
students and staff, thus making it a more
comfortable and enjoyable setting for everyone. It
is also aimed for a healthier and safer way of life.
“The single motivation of this ban is so we don’t
endanger the students, faculty and staff, and
visitors’ health,” President Rawlins explained. A
survey was
conducted over
staff and
students on
campus that
smoke. The
survey polled
528 students
and 307
faculty and
staff members. The result: 72 percent of students
and 78 percent of faculty and staff were in favor of
a smoke-free campus.
